Title: Schooner Sailing Event
Post by: JayDee on June 04, 2006, 11:54:56 pm
Hello,
Been sailing my Schooner, Bluenose, at Fleetwood.
The Event was  "A Lake of Sails".
A truly impressive turnout of Schooners of all sizes.
Skippers of both sexes and all ages, 22 of them, I think, had a wonderful days Sailing.
Congratulations to the Fleetwood Club.

Ron,
Err, Yes, she was going rather quickly ! !.
My excuse is that it was too windy for many of the smaller boats (untrue)? ;D.
Had a really good sail, on a really good Lake, with really good people!.

I was sitting in the car on the motorway on the way home, when I realised that I was smiling broadly.
Hope no-one saw me, 'cos I was alone at the time !!!.
Thats what happens after a Good Sail.
John.

Hello,
Details of my Schooner, Bluenose.
The Model is 1/20th Scale.

Details:-

Radio Gear:- UHF 459MHz, 2 Channels, Rudder Servo, 2 Sail Winches.

Hull length 72inches, Beam 14inches, Depth 13inches.

The overall Length of the rigged Model is 7 Feet.

The Main Mast height is 5 1/2 Feet, Fore Mast is 5 Feet high above the Deck.

Total Sail Area 3,500 sq inches.

Main Boom length of 40 inches.

Displacement is 75lbs.

Sailing Water depth 26 inches minimum.

Keel weight 10.5 Kg, 23lbs

In spite of the large size of the Model, much thought has gone into the matter of transport.
Bluenose will easily fit into all but the smallest of Cars, there is no need for Trailers, or large Vans.

Both Masts are removable, they are both Deck Stepped, the Bowsprit slides in, onto the Hull and the large Keel and Ballast can be quickly taken off, when Sailing is finished.

All the Standing Rigging is of fixed lengths of Stainless Steel cable, the Masts are jacked up at their Bases, to tension and set the rigging, when preparing to sail.

Another one from Fleetwood.

There are 2 Scale Figures standing on the Crosstrees, these enable the Children to "Scale " the model !.
Telling them the model is  " 1/20 Scale ", is easier to understand, when they see the Figures in the rigging !.
Hardly need to add that the figures are securely fastened on !!.

Hi Jaydee

I have looked at your site many times. The way you opted to turn the plug into a hull is an interesting way forward that I am considering.

I am curious about how you did your running rigging, servos, and where you routed the lines, etc.

I am planning my next project.

Hello Tiger,
My Bluenose has two drum Winches because the total sail area is 3,500 Sq Inches.
One winch controls the Main sail, the other one controls the Mizzen and the Jib.
The Jib boom is the only sail controlled at the Bow, the Outer flying Jibs are  fixed, but are adjustable before sailing.
All of the Jibs could be controlled, but this leads to lots of things to go wrong!.
There is so much sail area it would not really be worth it.

The diagram shows the general layout of the sheeting.
The photo shows what it looks like in real Life.

Thanks Jaydee

I got it now.
As your hull was solid I couldn't work it out at first.

That works neatly.

Hi John

I really like your schooner and I've been to your website for more information.  I read your 'Blog', and now fancy building one myself but I thought I might make one a bit smaller than yours.

I am enquiring about more details of these craft. Where can I find drawings, more info, differrent types of ship, etc.

Hope you can help

Ken

Hello Ken,
The book that seems to be the best source of info on Schooners is by Howard I Chapelle, " The American Fishing Schooners 1825-1935",     ISBN 0-393-03123-3.
Publishers are WW Norton & Company, New York, London.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ked1/bluenose.html     is the website of  Philip F. Eisnor, who also does a very good Plan of Bluenose, which I only found out about after I had struggled enlarging the one in Chapelles book.

http://www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/virtual/bluenose/archives.asp?ID=251&Language=English   is the website of the Canadian Archives.

http://www.bluenose2.ns.ca/index.html   is the website of the present day Preservation Trust.

http://www.shipmodeling.ca/aa2059.html   lots of pictures and details of Bluenose.

Hope this will be of help to you, I will gladly help in any way that I can !!.

Cheers,
 JayDee.   :D  :D  :D

Hello,
The box on top of the Winch shown in my Schooner above is quite easy to make.

Underneath the winch drum, is a piece of plywood.

The wood sits onto the top of the winch servo, and fits between the servo top and the underside of the drum.
***The wood will have to be exactly the correct thickness, to fit between the underside if the drum and the top of the servo.***
The drum MUST be free to turn with very little friction on the wood.
This will prevent the sheeting line from becoming trapped under the drum.

Two pieces of wood are then glued each side of the winch servo, onto the plywood, to stop the whole assembly from turning.
The box sides can br made from thin ply, or plastic card, with a window on the top.
The top of the box MUST fit down onto the winch drum, to stop the sheeting line from getting trapped between the underside of the window and the drum.

The exit hole is  on either side, to suit the boat.
A spring clip or an elastic band keeps the top of the box pressed lightly onto the drum.

With this system I have sheeted out over 30 inches of line, BUT left it all inside the box !.
A gentle pull will then get all of the line out, with NO tangles!!!.
The sails pull the line out, the winch pulls the line in!.

Easier to build than explain, any problems email me!!.

Hello,

Just finished making a couple of Dorys to go onto the deck of the Schooner.
Dorys were the fishing boats used to catch the Cod fish on the Grand Banks.
Some schooners had a stack of them each side of the forward cabins.
They were lifted over the side, into the water with loops fore and aft.

Hellfire John, 7 years is a long time between updates :} I don't update mine for 4 weeks and I'm getting itchy fingers to get back to it!

This is a fantastic build and I've visited your page several times this past year, some very good info there for builders of the Bluenose. :-))

Hello Brian,

Time does fly by !!, I was going to open another link, but my schooner was already on one, so - - - .
My boat was built in 1988, is still going very strong, has weathered the storms very well.
Never made any Dorys before, so I have now to fit them onto the hull.
Been on the Web and sorted out how they were fitted, so thats the next job !.

Promise it wont be as long for the next post !!!!!!!.

Hello John
Never mind the late post, it is good to be reminded how great some of these models look on the water and your model of Bluenose is a good example of that. I have seen the post before and some of the build information especially related to sail control interests me particularly. I have a 1/12th scale Thames Bawley sailing fishing boat which I currently sail with no r/c sail adjustment I just set them according to the wind strength and off she goes. Using some of your drawings I will attempt to install some sail control in my model.
So thanks again and best regards Chris

Hello Chris,

Thank you for the kind words.
The Fleetwood Club have "Schooner Racing" events, the main rule is - - No sail controls !!!.
They do as you do, set the sails to suit the conditions - - and away you go!.
With a little bit of practice it is amazing just how well a Yacht can sail without sail control.
It may mean sailing a slightly different course to get from A to B, but it does work.
I have sailed Bluenose at their events and had a steep learning curve !.

John.  :-)

Hello John

Well thanks for that, it is very encouraging to say nothing about making my life simpler. The Bawley is a really big and heavy lump and it takes a lot to put the gunwales under there is also the provision of sailing without the topsail and of course reefing. As you rightly say it makes for a fun time. O0 The only concession I have with the Bawley is a small motor driven prop that I can activate with the R/C which helps the boat through the wind if needed. Actually quite authentic as the later boats were built with donkeys and the earlier boats had donkeys fitted at times of upgrade. :-))
Best regards and thanks Chris G

I think free sailing boats are a lot of fun, a nice change from RC. I have a free sailing schooner, which I converted to a free-sailing brigantine. I also have a free sailing sandbagger. These two were built from kits:

Chris, do you have photos or a thread for your Bawley?
