Title: Ww2 destroyer TDS?
Post by: Malcolmbailey on September 12, 2018, 09:12:56 pm
On photographs of the f class destroyer HMS Fortune ( of which I am making a model) is a what I believe is a TDS.
I am struggling to find out how it would work in practice.
Can someone knowledgable on the subject please enlighten me?
Thanks
Malcolm

Morning John,
Yes I do!
I thought the T stood for torpedo hence my inability to find anything on the net.
I shall continue my research down the right path now.
Thanks
Malcolm

From memory there is a description and diagrams of the TSDS in 'The Kellys' ( history of the JKN destroyers)

Hi All
I have spent half an hour trying to post a photo without success.
One can be seen on the model by JRH of HMS Electra.
Sorry if I am misusing a copyrighted photo.

Hi John,
Yes it does look like one of two that would have been towed behind the destroyer.
Does it have a technical name.

Thank you gentlemen. Having googled “paravane” the whole purpose and mode of employment immediately becomes clear.
Thanks again

Paravanes are used against mines. A cable would be attached to the Paravane and also to the lower bow. As the ship moves through the water the Paravane would spread outward to make a wide path, as the cables came into contact with the cable that is attached to a mine and it's counter weight it would guide the mine cable outward to the Paravane which as a cutter head that would cut the cable to the mine and make the mine float to the surface so that it could be destroyed by another ship.
