Title: weathering /rust
Post by: BORIS on September 23, 2007, 10:32:50 am
Im Building the maggie m /shelterdeck trawler, i would like to make it look rusty here and there ,well i have used a product called "Scenic Rust" By Deluxe ...it looks quite effective on a top part of the boat ..just like real rust..however im not sure if it would look right on the hull as this is usually a mixture of muddy brown colours etc ,and i have varnished it with satin varnish..[done before i decided to weather it!!]any suggestions on How would you weather the hull...

Do a search for a thread called "weathering on scale boats " - most of the answers are there.
You sometimes have to be a bit creative with spelling when searching... :) ;)

I first put a couple of dark brown patches down with Humbrol, let that dry for a bit, then i apply some MIG pigments light rust and standard rust and wipe it downwards with a cotton bud soaked in thinners. Once everything has dried over night i then seal everything in with satin varnish.

put old nails and screws in a bottle of water and leave in a sunny place to go rusty when the water has gone keep topping up until
happy that theres plenty of rust knock of any rust that has formed try to leave bits not dust   dip small artist brush into satin varnish
and dip into the rust particles and apply to model  as its real rust it looks great and the bits add to the effect using the satin varnish
leaves the applied rust with a dull looked when dry

I would just add - dont try to do it all in one coat.  Put a very thin layer on where you think best (use upward strokes for a downward streak) and leave to dry.  Come back the next day.  Its easy to put more on - its a pig to get off.

... had made very good results with pigments from the Artist shop. The come along in various tones and you may wash them away if it is too much. Have found your imagination of rust- then fix it with a smooth layer of varnish.

I used same method as boatman 2 except I used salty water to rust the screws, see:

for pics of my efforts. I also used a finger to rub in the rust in a few places like along handrails, and to create the effect on steps.
