Hello to you,
    My tugs are having a rest and a few tweaks as reqd. The main project (shortened Eldergarth) is work in progress i.e. It's too damp and cold to be in the shed. I'll keep you posted!

I like the hopper barge,  :-))   I have thought of doing a dump barge, but we felt we would need
a pan on the bottom of the pond to try to collect the "debris" for recycling for the next contestant..

 I have created a lot of competition events for tugs. Some modeled after competitions in Belgium, water tank filling, and then the shearleg crane and windmill pylon. Others modeled after actual local incidents, container spill, and barge grounding.

Well I sold my modified Mr. Darby a few years ago, now building a master for molding this year. Photo below shows the style of tug that it will be. I was fortune enough to be able to get the drawings from the company when I was stationed in San Diego, Ca. The model will be in 1/48 scale.

For various reasons, my fleet have been laid up for a year or so. :(


Heighton is due to be cleaned up and presented to my grandson. Denton is also due for a spruce up and put back on the water in the Spring. Tarring is sadly looking a bit worse for wear. Steering gear has come loose at the rudder post and she was built with no access to it. :( Serious cutting or deck removal probably required. Meeching had her props and rudders removed, her previous owner never greased them and she leaked badly. Just haven't got around to putting them back in - a two person job, one to push the propshafts back in and one to carefully hold the lock nut in place until person #1 can put a couple of turns on it - and I've lost the photos of how the rudder gear was assembled. I may have to ask for some guidance when I put it all back together. I have, however filled in the huge holes around the anchors that the builder left wide open. Needless to say that they also let water in once a bow wave was achieved. Anyone near Newhaven in Sussex? Any help would be appreciated.


But I'm determined to get one or two back on the lake this year. Meeching first, then Denton, probably.

Having built and tweaked my model which is based loosely on a Damen  ASD 280 I spend my time at the club lake as recovery member being that there seems to be little interest in tug towing and very few members who own Tugs .
However I enjoy my self ....recovering embarrassed members sailing models and poorly charged batteries in their emasculate scale models , which keeps me occupied most visits , and this via a recovery boom I made with which I navigate out on a tethered line and steer around the vessel and head for shore to very relieved owners . %)


I carry Lloyds recovery forms but have yet to be reimbursed  O0 .....never mind the challenge is rewarding and keeps me on my toes


We are based at a large lake adjacent to the A14 in Cambridge , and acmes is usually good but have limited access now that our water has changed hands and we are allowed access which currently suits our needs ......but a great club and good friends all .........well up to know anyway ..... :-))

Well Ivor...........some may not acknowledge the selfless effort you provide...[however we do from afar :-)) & O0 ]

Well done....keep up the good work........why not find a suitable image of your successful vessel recovery & we could commence Legal Proceedings on your behalf to ensure the Law of the Sea is maintained

Your Lloyds & Lloyds Recovery Certification will certainly help, even if our Claim needs to be presented and held in The Marine Court of Europe [in the Haaaaauage............so when you are awarded 100% of the vessels + contents $ worth........we will simply ask for 1/4 of your gains {-)

Thank you for your kind comments Derek , , its amazing how popular you become when someones precious model lays motionless in the middle of a lake 5  metres deep and ink black water !


I would love to show you my collection of photo's but all mine seem to be to large for this Forum  <:(


I arranged a recovery system to help others..... based on a trailed line with floats attached to the tug  and the first three metres in polythene pipe so that it would not foul the Kort's or props of others nearby


These are 300mm lengths of dowel with floats at each end on swivel joints linked together some 15m long at the end of which is a line connected to a hand reel  shoreside to take up the slack.
and maintain contact with the vessel being recovered whilst the tug heads back to the edge of the lake and recovery is completed ... hope this explains the method its employed to you ......

Greetings everyone,
     I hope you are all safe and well and keeping the grey matter working. Progress report since 30/12/19, the tug is now finished and ready for the maiden voyage and final balasting. I have only yesterday fitted the bollards and Samson posts that I made along with the now winch, two roles were added this morning and a final check if all the elecrics, motors and lighting. All working spot on (so it should do it's all new!), I now need Boris to give us permission to launch her.
     I am useless at trying to post pictures but will take some tomorrow showing the detail and I'll ask one of the Balne moor lads to post them for me, I can then bore you all with the build and how it went.

During our lockdown in Melbourne my 45 year old Cervia cannot even get into the duck pond.  <:(
We have had enough rain to make the banks too treacherous to get anywhere near the water.  >>:-(
I just have to go on memories.  :embarrassed:

Fantastic!
I first saw tugs like that in 2014 at Mote Park in Maidstone and could not get over the detail.
I just wish I could build one but I no longer have the skills.  {:-{
