Title: Wiring a brushless motor
Post by: overthesea on December 31, 2018, 09:17:10 pm
Hi anyone who can help.
I have just purchased my first brushless motor to fit into a boat I am building. The motor is a Ripmax Quantum ll, 15. It has three wires attached RED, Black and YELLOW, Would someone be kind enough to tell me where these go? and do I need a different ESC to what I am used to using in brushed motors of which I have always used. I will be running on 7.2 volt MiHi battery pack.
Many thanks for any info.
Alan H

You need a ESC for Brushless motor, you connect the 3 wires to it, if the motor is running inn the wrong direction you just swab 2 of the wires.
When using NiMh remember to set the ESC to that type to ensure the correct cutoff voltage.

Hi Alan
I see the spec is 2 to 4s Lipo batteries for this motor with 35amp max so a 50 amp brushless ESC is plenty adequate
Lipo batteries are 3.7 volts per S so 2s = 7.4 volts and so on.

The motor is 1300kv this equates to revs per volt so the maths 7.4x1300 = 9,620 rpm
3s and 4s changes the total rpm significantly e.g. 4s = 14.8 volts times 1300

hope this helps

EDIT
looking down the road you also need to be looking at a programming card for whatever ESC you choose or check the instructions online to see if you can understand how to change settings via the transmitter without a card.

Hi Alan, when ordering or collecting make sure the speed control has forwards and reverse
capability from the TX and not as some state reversible.
Initially you may have to change prop direction which has already been
Addressed above, change any 2 of the 3 motor wires over. DO NOT swap the red and black battery
Wires over it will ruin your speed controller
