Title: 'Racing' Mini Tugs!
Post by: ray123 on January 04, 2019, 02:22:59 pm
H.N.Y to you all ive recently finished a small tugboat (16 inch) grp hull and 1.5mm styrene sheet for the wheelhouse i did get a bit ambitious with the running gear %% a 60mm prop 600 motor geaed 3:1 and 7.2 v nimh battery pack on sea trials it took off like a rocket ship {-) i have since then changed the motor to a lower rpm 500 and will see how that goes on the next outing i do still have some more bits to add to the boat
regards ray

Nice idea but to get any excitement the models need a lot more wash than is exhibited by the pictures. I just don't think that a 280 is going to do it!
Something like one of Ray's other models (perhaps not quite this much but you get the idea)
I wonder if the "Noodle Tugs" in next months Model Boats might hold any ideas?

Prob a 400 type motor would be better or even a motor out of a club 500 would be a good laugh

Agreed but the model suggested comes with all the bits & I suspect that the motor, motor mount, coupling, shaft & prop would all need replacing - unless SHG would do a Mayhem special edition! I am sure most of us could sort out our own motor mount.

Anybody else want a go at a class specification for a 'Racing Tug' series? :-)
Any hulls, plans or kits we could utilize?

You could consider Amera and their W103 tug kit? I've got 2 of their W102 fishing boat kits plus they did me a spare hull I'm scratch building into a much larger 1/20 inshore fishing boat into. When I ordered the second time they made the wheelhouse plastic a little thicker for me so they are open to suggestions for improvement I guess...
...you could easy fit a 400 size motor in there (I'm using 280's) but space is tight for batteries / RC gear but I imagine component shop could easily advise. But then at £22 for a set of mouldings it might be worth a try for the money? I made my first W102 kit into something entirely more scale looking, their base-mouldings are quite good to work from.

Not sure if this link will work but it's one of my mini logging tugs on 11.1 :) https://www.facebook.com/maurice.jones.14289/videos/1310208142429284/ (https://www.facebook.com/maurice.jones.14289/videos/1310208142429284/)

It doesn't work for non Facebook registered people.
Is the Amera kit styrene or ABS?
The hull looks incredibly like the Graupner Pollux I / Antje hull & is about the same size.
I also note that they make 2 different trawlers with the same dimensions & what looks like the same hull with a slightly different stern treatment. Opens it up to trawler fans as Martin suggested if any of the three were allowed. Personally I like the W101 Fishing Boat but with the wheelhouse nearer the front as a harbour work boat. And its only £19.99!

If you look at the link that Martin posted you will see an image of the mouldings which are supplied white. Not a difficult build (!) but not exactly ARTR either. Ebay is £35 delivered not £25 which is the usual show price.

I have seen these, they look almost the same as the Pollux and are probably a reasonable replacement.

.... and MUCH cheaper! :-)

Certainly cheaper than the Pollux 2, but I think the original was about 30 including the motor with the geared reduction poss a bit more, only got mine 2nd hand so not sure what original price was.. Still as you say a good price.I have seen them running and you would be hard pressed to tell the difference.

The Hull is 1mm plastic but he said he'll pull a 1.5mm hull on request.
