I start a building blog. The "Greif" was build in 1958 in Hamburg and is a powered pontoon with a Kampnagel crane.
1984 -2009 he was stationed in Brunsbuettel there I work with him. Today he is a hotel and museum in Hamburg http://myfloatel.de/hideaways/hafenkran-hamburg
scale is 1:20

the rivets are 1x3 mm. This is not much bigger than dust. I start with the boom because is the difficult at this.
Ralph
-
That is very nice metal work there, hope to see some more later.
-
Looks like a very interesting project. Are you working to a particular scale Ralph?
Regards
Ray.
-
Oh yes is 1:20 like the Süderoog https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,62270.0.html and his
barge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaEO2ZU-ah0
less is not good for my eyes
Ralph

Very nice model engineering Ralph,I look forward to following along :-))
Regards
Nigel
-
Your Suderoog is an excellent model, I'll be following your progress on the Greif with great interest.

The second part of the tip {:-{ the mast will last.

to the bottom end.
In the backyard of the last crane diver. I found the starboard propeller. and rebuild him scale size.
the port side was more difficult because no original %)
Ralph
-
The rivet counter indicates 306 +there on the ground. The boom has nearly full length.

It is good to see some pewter sploshing and lots of model engineering Ralph! Do you wear head magnifiers to help your straining eyes's?
The way you made those propeller blades is clever :-))
-
Very nice,
I cheated and simplified 2 of 3 marine cranes that I built.
%)
-
Thanks use only simple reading glasses.
and simplifire bud not so mutch.
Ralph

Thats lovely work - miniature engineering at its best by the looks of things

Ralph.......great steel [brass] work there in the floating crane Hotel :-))
http://myfloatel.de/hideaways/hafenkran-hamburg (http://myfloatel.de/hideaways/hafenkran-hamburg)
Certainly a unique way to save heritage .....although at 350E to 450E [weekend rate] per night and only one double room to book
How will the owners will make sufficient money to survive?
The WEB site tells that you can take breakfast on a small balcony, but it is always is raining in Hamburg O0
Please continue with your posts
regards Derek
PS...whats the food like @ Harrys Hamburger Hafenbasar? {Joint {-) .... just up the road a bit & lets hope it has a roof}
-
it is so far, the side parts are ready. the connection becomes difficult.

Oooh, I like some good fabrication :} I bet that structure already weighs a bit?

I never like to contradict people on Mayhem (believe that and I'll tell you another! :} :} :}) but I spent 4 days in Hamburg last September and it didn't rain once. Out of the breeze the weather was fine although like another great river city, Liverpool, there always seems to be a cold breeze coming off the river. Visits to the Hafencity district should include the Minature Wunderland (big, big model railway. Allow a day and a half!) and the Maritime Museum (allow a day!) which has a really good and inexpensive café serving a lot of traditional Hamburg fare.
-
The Weather in Hamburg ? for the british its this the south. %) so much better than at home %)
in the occasion of the opening of the second bag rivets (500 piece )
mass 450 g Load capacity 5 Kg

It shows what a collection of rivets will accomplish. Excellent work so far! Here's to the next 500 of the little blighters :-)
-
Yes I reach the hub. Its silver soldered. And already on the arm.
-
Wow you’re metal work is very impressive! :-)) :-))
-
Hello everyone
Summer is pond time. but a little is happened
I placed the guideway . for this I have to build a secondary support
(https://www.modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/images/2019/06/18/Ausleger25.jpg)
Ralph

moin
for raising and lowering the boom, I need a gearbox. The gearwheel need a second disc and the box is complete silver soldered
not done but under way.
the images are visible ?
Ralph
-
Super work! I have never seen a gearbox case made before.
-
Yes Ralph, images are here....
We see about 2.2:1 straight cut gear ratio [16/36?] in your manufactured reducer, but the coding for the Gearbox motor CCH2230 does not confirm the actual reduction ratio
I imagine the luffing of the crane boom would be very slow?.....
What speed do you plan?....or is the threaded bar the worm drive?
[I have seen these drives in old Dockyard cranes......the mechanism is called Bottle Jacks and they usually work in pairs]
Derek
-
it´s simply a motor and my gearbox ratio 1:3 . I even tjink 6V be enough, should not whip.
the best Image I have
Ralph
-
This is the casing tube that the Bottle Jack 'worm rod' rotates in......
Depending on the arrangement, many Dock Yard crane luffing mechanism is controlled by this Bottle Jack
The axis of the casing tube is dependent on the angle of luff from the lower to the upped extensions, hence the angle of arc shown
So either the gearbox with the worm rod is pivoted, or the worm wheel is pivoted and the casing stays fixed etc
Derek
-
Ralph, when designing a gearbox like that, how do you know what centres to use for the gears? Regards. Brian
-
everything pivotet, yes . The gearbox at the boom and the treaded rod at the structure.
@ Brian
oure german dealer has anny tables to calculate this https://www.maedler.de/product/1643/1618/1034/2739/stirnzahnraeder-aus-polyketon-modul-1 (https://www.maedler.de/product/1643/1618/1034/2739/stirnzahnraeder-aus-polyketon-modul-1)
here "d" half, of both gears. if you like learn about gears

this guys experts :-))
Ralph
-
Thank you Ralph. The tables will come in handy. By the way I have often thought about how to drive the rotation movement of a crane. A worm drive would be ideal from a speed point of view but otherwise not at all appropriate. Rather normal gearing for this function. Haven't looked through your blog yet so it may have been considered here already. Cheers for now. Brian
-
Also really useful videos. Thanks. :-))
-
now you kan see al the pivotes. I use a geared motor now, make 300 rpm

Ralph
-
oh the time is running %) but it´s done. I finished the boom.
The counterweights are made of thins 0,5mm brass. from photos.

the weights are empty I filled later.
Ralph
-
Excellent, Ralph. A masterclass in brasswork.
-
Following on Ralph..... :-)) ......are the counterweight buckets filled with water on the full sized machine?...... Derek
-
if I know how many weight, much later. lead pellets an seal with plaster. so I calculate.
Ralph
-
Award worthy model engineering there Ralph!
-
Simply amazing :-)) :-)) :-))

Hello again
After the boom, I needed a change. That's how I built a mooring boat. Belongs to the Schramm company which also had the crane.

Now you can continue with the construction. for this I built I-beams 20x8mm. Unfortunately not to sale

Welcome back after your years sabbatical. The ring gear is excellent with a smooth operation. I like the boat :-))

Hello again. I have finished the second beam. Was tricky because my folding bench is too small for it

WoW! Awesome! :o :o :o

That’s amazing :-))

all half jear I can report :embarrassed:

Ralph......
Many of these 2 jaw Clamshell crane buckets have a secondary trip wire to open the jaws
Details in the following link may assist

These too. Not shown in the film because the winch is still being worked on.

Ralph

Super mechanism Ralph & working well :-)) even in real life, the tripping mechanism is a delicate design function :o
Derek
-
I still have to modify the winch to ensure it works reliably. However, I won't be able to prevent the bucket from twisting.
