Title: Bismarck
Post by: Onetenor on February 14, 2019, 04:09:34 am
Well anyone falling for it? The Bismark part work. The most expensive way to build a model there is. The die cast hull will it be in sections ? I can't imagine it being whole.

Why not just buy the Trumpeter kit and all the aftermarket upgrades for about the cost of 40 issues?
At a total cost for the part work of 1,258.60 GBP it would be cheaper to go to Howe's and buy either version of Graupner's Bismarck which is actually bigger too. If you buy the uncamouflaged version you save about 358 quid.

I wonder what they calculate as being the expected number of subscribers  who do not make it over the 140 weeks and drop out

"Die cast metal hull??" 1.25 metres long?  Thats a heck of a casting to fit in with a magazine.
http://www.battleshipbismarck.co.uk/your-model.php  seems to indicated a well detailed, but large, dust gatherer intended to do no more than decorate a shelf.
Did Martin ever finish his part work Bismark?

The die cast hull sections are individually small.  However, you can't sail it or fit RC.
What is the chance if you subscribe to this they will ever complete all the issues?

 Nope!   :embarrassed:

I thought it was just overly engineered / too many parts,  I suspect due to the amount of issues they wanted to publish but also the size limitation of what you can stick to the front of a magazine and it arrive in one piece!

I just got frustrated with the weeks and weeks of planking.....  %%

Just seen the advert - a big ornament with moving parts but very little play value.
Since the only part that anybody sees is the paint, the Trumpeter suggestion looks good.

Why not just buy the Trumpeter kit ......

I've seen a couple of these finished and they can look very good. My dad's model is coming along in fits and starts as he moves between projects. His R2D2 is coming along well too.

For what it is worth, the etched brass is superb and well designed. Planking the hull wasn't so much fun, but you can't stick a full hull on the front of a magazine. We've had it on the water though and it sailed well.

Nowadays, the Trumpeter kit looks good, although I prefer metal to plastic for fine work, and anyway, it wasn't available when this came out.

I know that a lot of modellers like to treat anyone who dabbles in a partwork with utter contempt, but there is a market for them. If there wasn't, they wouldn't keep appearing. Each to his own.

I do want know how heavy the diecast Bismark will be though...

Certainly didn't mean to criticise.  Anyone who picks up the brush and scalpel is a hero from the Model Engineers, right through to the guy who's building stuff out of matchsticks.  We need to show solidarity so that people don't go back to fishing!  :} :} :}

I do think the 'partworks' are a good idea in principle ( even if expensive )  and it does spread the costs........       {:-{
Certainly the the research and additional article in the magazines are truly impressive!

Light enough for a strong shelf, probably too heavy for a floating model.  There might be problems making it waterproof enough to float.  The advertising indicates that it is intended as an ornament with controllable feature rather than a working RC model.  A floating 1:200 Bismark will be around 14lb.

If it was put on water there should be a 'how she is now' option  %)

I suppose it depends on what she displaces.

Looking on both the cornwall model boats and the graupner main site it seems that all the Graupner battleship kits are not available (out of stock) wonder if this is unexpected customer demand  a manufacturing hiccup or the company going down the tubes ?

They're still showing on Howe's Models website.

I'd agree with you about anyone who picks up a brush of scalpel!
We do get a lot of moans every time someone mentions a partwork though. It seems to be a "thing" among some modellers. As you say, the most important thing is to make something, anything! A Bismark made from matchsticks, that would be a challenge though.

Good point about fishing too. Lakes are for sailing model boats in.

Quite a lot by the look of it, and all made from tiny bits of wood...

I couldn't find much about it beyond the pictures that weren't in German but there's more of his work here, http://www.linienschiffe.de/fremde%20seiten/streichholz/streichholz.html

It's just that before you start on building one of these best to check that you have three years left on the clock .

It's an interesting build out of the materials mentioned this time instead of a wooden hull, even the deck appears well reproduced.

However, that chap in the Youtube video... what a heathen! I'm a plastic kit modeller too and I can't understand that he uses sprue cutters to cut up the sprues into usable sections and then proceeds to twist the plastic part off the sprue tree! My God! He's got a purpose made tool in his hands that he has just used and he makes that horrendous mistake, failing that you could use a scalpel! I may have done that when I was ten and as an adult modeller I can afford tools but to ignore the tool in his hand totally bewilders me! :o %%

Or is that just me?!? %)

I buy lots of half-built kits and you would be surprised at the poor quality of people's kit building.  Twisted-off parts, not trimmed or fitted, big splodges of tube glue, sticky fingerprints, massive gaps etc.  I'll bet this kit produces lots of half-built disasters for ebay in a year or so.

... and he's going to regret not using a cocktail sticks for the superglue, he's already had to do a wipe off... but got away with it.

Should be an interesting series.  :-)

just noticed on episode 2, he has passed comment on the comments here. I have the trumpeter Bismarck kit and hood, with the dx mk1 kits. I have just got 1 and 2 of this build. very very expensive, but so far very good quality pieces, including steps already shaped to fit. very detailed, and if careful easily put together.
