Title: Connection Terminals
Post by: tizdaz on February 16, 2019, 10:23:40 pm
hi guys,
Im looking for a suitable connector to connect my motor & battery cables to my electrics board. Im looking for something of a plug type so i can remove my electric board with ease. At mo im using XT connectors but i want to use a plug that can be mounted to the side my electric box, to give you an idea what im after heres a pic:

something like that but a plug thats suitable for 12v 22ah current (12/14 awg wire).
Any ideas what these plugs might be called etc as ive looked but cant seem to find anthing suitable?
cheers

had a look at the molex connectors but from experience building PC's, molex connectors are VERY stiff to disconnect, im after something with a little more ease to connect/reconnect
I have some connectors lying around same as these will these connectors be ok? or is the amp too high on my batterys which is 22Ah?

4mm bullet connectors epoxied into the wall of the box would be the simplest way

You could modify the molex connectors to make them easier to disconnect.
If the problem is the holding pins/lugs you could consider removing from one or even both sides. This depends on how much vibration you think you will get. Or just shaving the pins.
If it is the fit of the plug and socket that are very snug, you could shave off tight spots with a Stanley type blade. Drawing the blade across the plastic of the male part like a scraper, not cutting.

Just some thoughts.

At the risk of repeating something which has been dealt with on a number of occasions; even though your battery has a capacity of 22AH the actual current drawn from it might be lower or higher than 22A. It depends on the total current drawn by the various loads you have connected to it. That value will dictate the size and type of connectors you need. I won't give any examples because "maths lessons" seem to upset some sensitive folk. An ammeter connected in series with the battery when everything is operating will give an indication of the current drawn. If/when you have the time you might find some useful related stuff herein. http://www.modelboats.co.uk/news/article/but-i-don't-understand-electronics/18054 (http://www.modelboats.co.uk/news/article/but-i-don't-understand-electronics/18054)

when I was doing the N gauge railway points control panel, it had 30-40 connections, although usually 16 v I believe, this was bought from Maplins - though that's gone now and a quick search on amazon didn't show up any of the connectors without a ribbon cable attached, the ones I used I liked because they had the metal springs on each end to prevent them coming apart, sure I still have a pack somewhere.

depending on the size and current..gm and other auto manufatures make 2-4-6-8-10 and larger weather proof male/female connecters..gm ones come with terminated leads preinstalled(granted they are all white..if you have access to a what we call a pick&pull junkyard here(you pull the parts you want off wrecked car's) should be cheap..wireing is usualy 22ga

hi guys :)
thanks for info, i had another good look & found exactly what im looking for, they are called Anderson Powerpole plugs & they come in a few different flavours/colours (15/30 or 45amp), the ones ive ordered are rated upto 30amp, they also do ones above 45amp for heavy duty stuff & are a slightly diff design. So i will be changing my current connectors to these & will mount them to my electric box that im making out of clear perspex.

Good thing about these is the connectors interlock with eachother on any of the 4 sides, ive also ordered a panel mount for them:

i got to be honest its first time ive heard of them lol :D
but after looking up reviews etc they are all good & these seem 100% what im after, i like the fact i can just clip more connectors onto the "block" if i decided to add another electronic device in future (such as sound unit!) :)

Keep an eye on them, I've never seen one without corrosion on it. That and the metal flattens over time and provides a poor connection. There's a good reason very few people use them %)

Powerpoles were my choice - used them since the 90's in both RC boats and Cars as a replacement for the molex/ tamiya connectors, never had an issue or failure, the silver coating sometimes tarnished but that was easily cleaned off......I bought in bulk and haven't used them all yet!

Is there any chance you can post a picture, or a link to a suppliers page, with picture, please?
I look on Amazon and I get various results, none conclusive.

In. US and AUS they are popular as i read up on them and are given good reviews, but over here not as popular as hard to get hold of and are quite expensive, but ive not read anything about them being poor!?

Tiger Tiger i got them off ebay, jist search gor Anderson Powerpoles 😉
