That's an HP 61, and it looks to me like a fairly late version. HP stands for 'Hirtenberger Patronen', an Austrian munitions company who are situated in Hirtenberg somewhere south of Vienna. The 'Patronen' part of the name is the German word for 'cartridges'. These engines were produced as a sideline after the Company started making high power engines for military drones in addition to munitions. Probably one of the family was a modeller, and I think these engines first appeared 1970ish, they were very powerful, were the first (I think) to use Schnuerle porting, and were used by a few model flying and boating champions. I think they are still produced somewhere in California, no longer any connection with the original Hirtenberger Company as far as I know. Couldn’t even guess at a value.

Sorry, I have to differ. I believe it is HB rather than HP. Good info about the HP marque though. HB (Helmut Bernhardt Feinmechanik) were / are German. Mecoa acquired HP, and now produce HP engines in America. Mecoa also distribute HB - which appear to still be available. Many of the HB engines used what was known as PDP (Perry Directional Porting), which was a variation of loop scavenging, and pushed the performance of loop scavenged engines forward - before Schnuerle porting really took off. Just to add to confusion, both marques were very much of the same era. I think they were both distributed by Ripmax as well.
A couple of links for perusal....

Looks like you know more about model plane engines than most of us do, the 'Made in Germany' bit should have given it away, but I was another one who thought that the logo cast on the crankcase does look remarkably like the original HP one. Was there any kind of connection between HP and HB? I know that the later HB was also Schnuerle ported, so were these two quite distinct products from two unconnected manufacturers?

Must admit, the "B" in the photo looks a lot like a "P". I recognised the engine, but I pinched some of the info from the Mecoa website. I seem to remember HP and HB from a very old Ripmax catalogue - along with Austro-Webra, who seemed to be doing similar things at the same time as HP (Schnuerle porting, ABC, rear rotor induction). It was a t0ss-up for me between the HP .40 and the Webra .40. The stuff of daydreams, and only daydreams for me, as both were beyond my means at the time (pocket / Christmas money), so a Merco .35 it was - my first marine engine.

I'm not personally aware of any connection between HP and HB, but couldn't say for sure that there wasn't one.
