Title: rust sprays
Post by: rd on February 24, 2019, 05:48:41 AM
I've been looking at rust effect spray paints on Amazon. They are all metallic, but could they be gone over with a Matt lacquer? Has anyone tried any of these product's? I'm spraying a set of scallop dredges so the whole thing will be rust coloured if that makes a difference. Thanks for you time.

Hi Rd,
Have you looked at model railway weathering paints and powders  do you have a airbrush, oil paints when  thin with turps to make streaks.

No I havnt got an air brush....yet. because of the awkwarard shapes and that involved with a scallop dredge I wasn't sure any of the other usual model weathering techniques would work. I'll do a bit more research into you recommendations, thank you very much.

I imagine they could be providing the lacquer is based on the same paint formulation as the weathering paint.  Rust needs a little texture as it flakes in real life. I used to add talc to enamel paint creating a rough/matt effect depending on how much you added. Gunze Sanyo do Mr Surfacer mediums in a variety of grades for military modellers, but they would be suitable for creating rust texture. Talc is much cheaper though!
