Title: Chrome portholes
Post by: frog32 on February 27, 2019, 08:03:12 PM
Hi
Can anyone direct me to where I can obtain a few Chrome flange portholes approx 15-18mm outside diameter. They could be chrome on plastic as fitted, or chrome on brass.
I am restoring a 1960s Graupner Condor 1 boat and sadly damaged a couple of the bow portholes.
I have contacted most of the obvious suppliers but with no luck.
So would appreciate suggestions of any other places I could contact, or please look in your bits and pieces box to see if you have any lurking within.  Thanks.

Regards Roger.

You could always use plastic or metal ones and spray them with chrome paint which you can get in rattle cans from I think Halfords. I have done this myself and got a good finish?

Hi Graham
I did think of that but my results just looked like silver paint. What make of chrome spray did you use?
Another thought is to buy some brass portholes and see if I can get them nickel plated.
Probably will be very expensive.

Other options are:
- Bare Metal Foil, see your local plastic kit supplier
- Alclad paints, this goes on very very nicely. Air brush works great with this paint.

I have used both of the above with good effect.

A possibly useful thread for info on attaching aluminum foil to plastic:  http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/tools_techniques_and_reference_materials/f/13/t/140415.aspx

+1 on the chrome pens- really good chrome finish, and if it does wear, you can just go over it.

Hi All

Many thanks for all your suggestions.

UKmike. I need six portholes if I have to replace all of them, but I have managed to save three of the originals.

Gerrit. I will look into the foil laying process but I think it will be a bit fiddly on small portholes.

To the rest of you who have suggested the chrome pen, that looks the way forward if I canít find them already chromed.

Thanks again Roger.
