Title: Looking for a brushless motor + esc recommendation for a twin hopper waverunner.
Post by: bigfinger on March 15, 2019, 10:32:36 AM
managed to snag a 'spares or repair' Waverunner off gumtree for very little and i want to get it up and running.

so i intend to refit all the electronics with a 2.4/5.8 control and receiver.

no motors in it and the board is fried.

would like to kit it out with brushless and am current reading through the brushless forum looking for ideas but i really have zero clue what motor to go for.

it will be prop drive not jet.

anyone point me in the right direction at all?

Hi bigfinger,

Is 'twin hopper waverunner' a bait boat?

Indeed it is. here (https://www.anglingdirect.co.uk/waverunner-mk4-baitboat?msclkid=94e7f7a158971e77035bab2ae6f1a3c5&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Bing%20Shopping&utm_term=1103400093193&utm_content=All%20Products) is some pics of one.

One of the very annoying things in hoping to cure is the boats have an all or nothing throttle control.

Motor choice will depend on the prop size. What diameter are they?

It costs over 800 and has dodgy throttle controls?  :o

Without popping then on my CMM (as they are three blades) my best estimate with a vernier is 40-45mm

Yep, welcome to the overpriced world of carp fishing  <:(

I've not paid that btw. This is a non working boat that someone neglected and then reverse connected the batteries and fried the board. Basically it's just hull now

You don't want to know how much people want for a handset lol...  150 !!!

I'm an engineer by trade, mechanical not electrical but I'm no stranger to CNC electrics which is why I want to save a bit of cash and do this myself, a bait boat is just an RC model with a door in it after all.

Once I've got it running then I may add things like gps and autopilot. Quite looking forward to burying my head in the electronics and programming really.

I've got a full CNC workshop and several 3d printers to hand and some injection moulding machines too. So I've got the kit.

OK thread seems to have gone a little quiet.

Im considering the graupner 600 (https://howesmodels.co.uk/product/graupner-brushless-speed-600/) as a motor, ill be putting a pair of them in there.

now... as for an ESC ideally i imagine i would like a dual one? I will need PWM on it ofc.

power off the graupner datasheet is 230W 16A

Anyone tell me if any of this sounds right or am im getting this completely wrong?

currently considering these esc's

Those look like Airplane controllers. You need to check that they have a reverse function, since some Airplane controllers are forward only. It's worth checking out what ESC's are available on Hobbyking.com

oooo good catch i didnt even consider that, thank you!

and lo and behold they list a dual controller :)

that should handle my graupner 600 brushless do you think driving a 40-45mm prop?

thank you for your reply btw, much appreciated ...

That Dual Controller is for a Brushed motor, so not compatible with your Brushless motor. For Brushless you always need one ESC per motor. A pair of these should be ok:

Thanks :)

That looks water cooled though, do I have to do that? I'm not racing

I am using a similar pair of controllers at the moment, and i didn't plumb them in for water cooling, and they don't even get warm. So for a Bait Boat i wouldn't have thought it would be necessary.
