Hello, I am new member who would like to try his hand at model boat building. I was into RC aircraft 20+ years ago.
I want to build a wooden kit, of the "speed boat" style,not cabin cruiser,something sleek.
Now come the boring bit for you,what kit?
After a little looking aerokits look to be good quality,i want that. Had some very iffy plane kits years ago with die "crushed" parts!
SLEC is a name I know from years back and they do some "vintage kits" . Are they any good ?
Lastly a see a plan on line for a Vic smeed? Musketeer. This looks just what I want BUT do not have band saw anymore PLUS I would like some instrutions as I am new to boat construction.
Any pointers on kit choice of the"sporty/sleek" variety would be excellent and any good vendors to use.

What a fantastic post you have put together to help Gazza choose a boat Martin!
Incidentally I have the red and black Patrol boat amongst my collection - made from a kit that was a joy to build.

Welcome to the forum.
The Sea Hornet is a great little boat has I built my one from the original plans.
A bit small tight by the time you get the rudder servo, battery and receiver in the stern.
The motor and ESC in the middle.
I enlarge the hatches and it work out OK.
I installed a 28mm brushless motor, 45A ESC, 2650mah 3S Lipo battery and a 32mm 2blade prop.

Like the look of the Arrow also.
Another boat is the SG&K 1920 Gentleman's Runabout.

If you fancy something a bit more ambitious you could consider the Fairey Huntsman 31. Although it looks more complex, it is a bang up to date design using the latest manufacturing techniques and goes together very easily. The instructions are literally a model of their kind!
I reviewed it in the Model Boats 2018 Winter Special issue:

which has ten pages devoted to it!
Although it has cabins, it is very much a performance boat.

Colin, Does the Feb '19 model Boats issue contain the plan for the Whaleboat? Cant see from the pictures of it your link.

The Feb 19 issue features the first part of a review of the Deans Marine Whaleback (not whaleboat) kit by Nick Brown so there are no plans in the magazine apart from the small profile drawings of different types that Nick has used to illustrate his article.

Ah! I meant Whaleback doh! I have been reading the Masterclass build on Mayhem of the Whaleback by 'Bluebird'.
Now I need to sort out some plans.

If I was to go SLEC the Arrow looks good.
Just found a vendor in cornwall that carries many kits. As the aerokits and Dumas but the Rivas are very expensive.Being my first kit prob best to
stay away from them.
