Title: Hobbyengine Southampton Tug - no reverse
Post by: billscottni on May 03, 2019, 06:07:46 pm
Have a Southampton tug that won't operate in reverse. Motors don't turn when stick put to reverse, although the motor for the smike system does turn.

Anyone got any solutions?
Is it possible to get the combined RX/ESC/Controller board as a spare part

Notice you haven't had a reply.  Possibly because most folk don't have one so here's some sort of feedback (I don't know the product myself thought I've looked and considered buying one many times myself)...

Not sure, probably not though -they're usually non-serviceable / cheaper toy-like components made to match a price.  I think Howes models sell the models, you could ask.  I've only ever seen folk writing of ditching the stock parts and replace with new regular R/C parts.

Don't know about smike.  Is there a way to disconnect the motors from the shafts to check them?  Are the shaft couplings / props on threads or does it use grub screws on plain shafts?  Sometimes with threaded connections, if something's loose it can tighten and lock in one direction, then release itself again when the motors spin the other way.  Rule 1 always applies -start disconnecting to test each thing in isolation.  Disconnectiong the couplings lets you check the motors and shafts separately.  If you can remove the shafts are they still greased up?

Not sure if this helps, perhaps a starter for things to look at anyway.  It could of course be something in the transmitter.  Someone on another forum in the US recently reported similar thing I think.  Apparenty a loose wire on the potentiometer on the back of the sticks.

Thanks Rich,
I've the shafts off the drive and the gearbox split. Motors are definitely only turning going forward. In reverse - nothing. I'm going to try rebindnig the TX in case it's something silly like that

My Son as one but I change all of it out for standard stuff, MTroniks speed controller and a spektrum receiver 7.2 lipo its a nice little tug and its rescued a few boats with a tow line.

Ah, think I remember seeing it was tiny little motors for that size of model now.  Not sure what to say apart from if you have a multimeter and happy to keep taking things apart to keep checking.  If you can get to circuit boards, check for water damage and clean up with alcohol/IPA/contact cleaner.  To be honest, for the cheapness of bog-std R/C gear, sometimes ditching the parts and replacing as klz says is not much hassle or extra outlay at the end of the day and there's plenty of write-ups how to do it -I think you still get allot of near-scale looking model out of the box even if you have to invest a few £ on replacing the electronics when they go wrong.
