Last week I had a trip to Orkney and travelled there and back on the MV Pentalino from Gill's Bay and St Margarets Hope. This is a catamaran ferry, although not high speed it is the shortest crossing taking only 60 minutes. Both times the vehicle deck was full with cars, vans and motor homes fitted in like a jigsaw, just enough room between them and the stern door to take my motorbike. A few photos taken as she arrived at the orkney end. The weather was good and the watwer was quite smooth so I was able to spend the journeys on the sun deck enjoying the great views of the islands on route. At times it was no more than around 2 boat lengths from shore.

There is an older ferry laid up at St Margarets Hope, bought as a backup to the Pentalino and for freight traffic but not inservice. This is the MV Orcadia ex MV Saturn which used to sail under CalMac. This is a twin Voith Schneider drive and is a development of the MV Jupiter and Juno.

A few photos showing the view from deck. The last is on Stroma nearest to the mainland of Scotland.

Fingles Cave?
-
Fingals cave is on Staff , not in the Pentland Firth

One of the sea caves on the west coast of Stroma, I was a bit too late to catch the fact that this one goes right through the rock to form a passage.
