have got an old warship, probably built in the midst 80's. it looks like the gray was sprayed with a lacquer or something that is turning brown with age. any ideas on on how to get it back to gray, or is a strip and repaint?
-
Have you considered colouring it in with felt pens?

I believe Andy, that at work, your nickname is Crayons. and no, it's a 7ft model, and if you had been at work this week, you would have seen it!

Sounds like it was coated with a non u.v tolerant varnish. :o
Probably best to rub it down and repaint, followed by a couple of coats of u.v resistant varnish / lacquer. 8)

Common problem with old paintings as well. They need a skilled conservator to remove the varnish and recoat without damaging the paint below.
So it looks like a rub back and repaint job if it won't damage the detail

... or, just leave it as it is and call it "weathering" {-)

I had something similar and a friend of the family sorted it for me by giving it a
Wipe in T-Cut. I don’t know if it will work for you but maybe easier to do than a full run back

I had this previously on a bunch of models I bought, from an estate sale, that were made in the late 70's/80's where they'd been varnished and it was going a brown/yellow colour.
Gave them to a more experienced modeller to sort them out, quite a few had to be totally stripped back and re done. There was a couple which had thick enough paint underneath and the varnish was sufficiently "gone" that we used a hair dryer to heat up the varnish and it basically scraped off and then we just gave it a fine sanding and put a more modern clear coat over the top.
It worked but the ones that were stripped back obviously looked a far sight better. Probably worth just going whole hog on it?
