Title: Billings Karoline
Post by: wideawake on September 28, 2007, 03:25:26 pm
Hi all

My first post since joining Mayhem a couple of days ago.

I'm well on with the building of a Billings Karoline and at present working on the sails.   Not being expert in these things I have a question.   Should all the sails be bolt-roped or only the mainsail?   I note that the bolt rope is only indicated on the main sail on the plan but there's plenty of rope for all the others as well.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi Wideawake,   welcome ,
I think that all sails are bolt roped, and I think that the bolt rope was always on the port side of the sail. This I believe,  was to help sailers when they had to hoist the sails..they could do it in the dark...some one will correct me if I`m wrong, good luck with build   ,,,  Ken...

Hi Ken

Thanks for that.  My instinct says the same. I just found it odd that the plan didn't show bolt-roping on the other sails.   The build is a biot spasmodic.  I'm at the rigging and sail making stage now though.   I've added a drop keel and rudder extension to help the sailing qualities.  I started after reading the build article in Model Boats.
I'll post a picture or two when the camera is near the boat!
Cheers
