INTERNATIONAL MODEL BOAT SHOW 2019
We are pleased to announce that the 2019 International Model Boat Show will be returning on Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th November to the Warwickshire Event Centre.  This will be a new two-day format this year and not open to visitors on the Friday.

As usual the show will be packed with over 600 fantastic models from over 25 club and society displays. The excellent and varied display of models from early warships to modern power boats and ships will be complemented by action on the large indoor boating pool.

Organisers expect nearly twenty specialist suppliers to be present offering visitors everything they could need for their boat builds and other modelling needs.

In addition to all the boating action, the Tamiya Truckin team will be demonstrating and driving their 1/14 scale radio-controlled models on a roadway system over 80 metres square. This fantastic arena will feature radio controlled 1/14 scale trucks, plant and machinery.

This year the competition for the “Model Boats Magazine - Society Trophy” will be hotly contended. Last year’s winners were King Lear Model Boat Club, 2nd place was The Lifeboat Enthusiasts Society and 3rd position was Bournville Radio Sailing & Model Boat Club.  Who will win this year?

STOP PRESS
for this year only.........Blackheath and Steamboat Phil will be joined by none other than GIANT PENGUIN!
Phil has kindly consented (foolishly) to myself helping on his stand, you know, setting out tins of soup, gummy sweets, eating cake, running for coffee that's had various things put in it! He really thinks if I'm helping him I won't do anything!!!
so for all you officiandos of penguins.........his stand is open for fish this year!

Hi all,

I have a 66" model of an Outerlimits sv43 that I will be finishing soon, people who do see it love it so I thought it may be nice to take her to a show. Is it possible to show models without being a member of a club? I am assuming you need to be a member of a club but thought it was worth an ask!

Currently the boat lives under towels in my workshop and it seems a shame to keep her cooped up!

INTERNATIONAL MODEL BOAT SHOW 2019
News + Updates

The International Model Boat Show, regarded as one of the UK’s leading marine modelling exhibitions, will return to the Warwickshire Event Centre on Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th November.  The show this year will be a new two-day format and will not open to visitors on the Friday.

Organisers are expecting 3000+ visitors, who will be able to enjoy in excess of 600 models from over 25 clubs and societies, where some of the finest marine models will be on display.

The excellent and varied displays include everything from early warships to modern power boats – all of which will be complemented by action on the large indoor boating pool.

There will be nearly 20 specialist suppliers present, offering visitors everything they could need for their boat and modelling needs and attendees will be able to view new technologies and buy newly available products.
In addition to all the boating action, the Tamiya Truckin team will be demonstrating and driving their 1/14 scale radio controlled models on a roadway system over 80 metres square. This fantastic arena will feature radio controlled 1/14 scale trucks, plant and machinery.
The Surface Warship Association will also be celebrating their 25th anniversary at the show with a display of never before seen unique models promoting the hobby of scale model warships.
Exhibitors will once again be vying for the prestigious ‘Society Shield’, sponsored by the magazine “Model Boats”. This is voted for by the clubs and societies themselves and will be awarded to the best club display in the show.  In 2018, King Lear Model Boat Club came 1st, in 2nd place was the Lifeboat Enthusiasts Society and in 3rd position was the Bournville Radio Sailing & Model Boat Club.  Who will win this year?  As King Lear have won for 3 years in a row, they will have a rest year in 2019 so the competition is wide open!!!

Lots of road changes around Coventry, confused the hell of of my satnav!

Here early this year, more by misjudgment than planning. Lot of punters queuing up ready for the off. Very wet here but not raining, good hard standing for all the cars.

Ah! Doors open now... photos later!

Coffee, coffee, coffee! 😁

excellent day 1. not as busy as i would have expected. Slec seemed to be doing a roaring trade in flat pack boats. great lunch with Martin. we had salad and Martin had pics to prove it.....ok he took pics of salad and had pie, while i had bbq chicken.
not so many traders this year, but great to see some stalwarts still going. Nice to see Gerome and Sue still going, will they ever retire?
some great looking models on display abd Steamboat Phil has relaxed enough to drink a tea I bought him. Although he did catch Nick and Myself hiding behind his tables. lets see what Sunday brings

Cracking day yesterday, the orange glow from the light almost takes 20 years off Bob(Shipmate60)  {-) {-) ;D

Just need a great show in the south to attend and my yearly trips out will be looking rather good in the diary.

Looks like you had a good show , any photos?

Martin
That terrible umbrella seems to take good photos.

Your report on the car park was a bit previous. I arrived at 1020ish and was directed to park right next to a 2" deep puddle. Squelched all the rest of the day,  >>:-(

Spent too much money but what else would I do with it but spend it.  :-))

I enjoyed this year although the knees and ankles don't like that concrete floor too much.  Some real nice boats on the stands and was impressed with the Polish lads, I hope we'll see them at more shows.

Great show, spoke to lot of very interesting people, shook hands with many friends old and new, lots of laughs, great lunches ( sorry we missed Colin, my fault... )  lots of new models I hadn't seen before, epic rain, many good laughs, lots of stories, flat pack boats & wood popular this year, remembrance Sunday, keep on trucking, Surface Warship Association's super cake, underwater drone, worlds worst umbrella, super fast electric hydros, Jack Snary & The Royal Spithead review, Matchstick HMS Belfast, Tony Judd & his Plymouth Hooker! The giant Orca boat with realistic Roy Scheider & Robert Shaw - Mayhem's 'Boat of the Show'.... more as I remember...  O0

Edit, Klunk, Nick, Steve, Phil, Tony, Iain,  Jerome and Sue, Richard Eels, John, Steve, Paul, Martin, Rex & everyone else who asked why I was carrying an umbrella handle about!

A huge thank you to all those that contributed to the demonstrations on the pool. Having the dock in position was very popular (thanks John) and nearly everyone tried to bring their boats into harbour. Even the young visitors in the 'Childrens Sessions' enjoyed trying to get the small lifeboats into the dock. Many thanks to the Surface Warship Association folks for all their help in looking after all the kids.
As pool master and commentator it would not be possible to do what we do without all the co-operation that goes on behind the scenes. Well done everyone involved.
Great to meet up with friends in the hobby from all over the country and have a 'chin wag'!
Many thanks  :-)) Steve Dean - Pool Master

I went on Saturday and enjoyed the show very much although not the return trip in heavy rain punctuated by a 1 hour stop on the M40 due to an accident which put me onto the horror of the M25 in mist and rain at 5pm!

Thanks to everyone concerned for all the effort put in to make the trip worthwhile. It's a shame, for various reasons, that we only have around half the traders that attended just a few years back but those who were there seemed to be doing OK. I saw quite a few of the distinctive SLEC flat pack kits being carried off. I bought a few bits myself including some of that lovely 0.4mm (1/64) birch ply plus some hardwood stripwood from SLEC.

Does anyone know if there was a best club stand award and if so, who got it?

Colin

The annual International Model Boat Show, was sure to please last weekend at Warwickshire Event Centre.

The event hosted thousands of visitors, treating them to an extensive display of the wonders that marine modelling can offer. The incredible variety of models, from early warships to modern power boats and ships, was only magnified by the beauty of seeing them on the water with a large indoor pool available for those feeling brave enough to take to the helm!

Over 600 models from a variety of clubs and societies, were in attendance, with their makers at hand eager to answer any questions. Such was the high calibre of impressive models on show, it must have been very hard to judge which club was going to be taking home the sought-after Society Shield. In the end it was Worcester Model Boat Club who managed to net the 1st prize trophy!

In second place was Wicksteed Park Model Boat Club and in 3rd place was the Lifeboat Enthusiasts’ Society.

It was spectacular to see sparks of inspiration twinkling away in the eyes of so many, across all generations. After seeing the static models, visitors came together around the pool to view, and join in with, the live action.

The event offered more than a fun day out too, specialist suppliers were present to provide visitors with everything they could need for their own builds.

Don’t miss out, make a note of next years dates now! The International Model Boat Show 2020 will be held on Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th November at the Warwickshire Event Centre.

Can’t wait till then? The next major event for marine modellers is the London Model Engineering Exhibition which takes place at Alexandra Palace from the 17th to 19th January 2020. The exhibition showcases a vast range of models from across the spectrum including marine vessels.

See www.londonmodelengineering.co.uk for further details.

No indication of whether footfall was up or down or whether the two day format was a success but at least they seem committed to next year. Could do with more traders though.

Hi Colin .
I to was intrested in that so I was watching the croud . I think Sat was down a bit. Sun deffently down and of course no Friday. So over all down a lot.

As for traders . Have a look at this 2012 You tube. from 39 sec to 49 sec. You can see lots of traders in the Lower hall and some are off camera, under the restraunt. In 2019 there was 1 trader in the lower hall and he only sold RC trucks so dosnt really count.
Also in the Upper hall traders were down by several.
Sorry to say but the orginers of this show had better come with some thing in realation to traders or this show will die and be no more.

I think you need to take into account the weather as well which was pretty foul. My trip up was OK but constant heavy rain all the way back including a 1 hour stop due to an accident on the M40 followed by a nightmare drive around 25% of the M25. And I probably had it easy compared with anyone coming down from the North and the dreadful conditions up there. That must have impacted on numbers.

I agree trade support was disappointing, there seem to be several reasons, people have been retiring, a couple of big names now run their own events and it is still difficult to cover costs from sales.

It is obviously becoming difficult to stage a viable dedicated model boat show on a purely commercial basis so maybe the next step is to merge with the model engineering shows. There are some indications that this may be happening at Alexandra Palace for example.

If the traders are no longer trading and no replacements, then there is not a lot they can do in that sense, clubs are suffering as well.

It is a shame but what can they do except as Colin has mentioned team up with other events.

There are still quite a few traders out there, they just choose not to display at shows.

I feel saddened penning this comment, but it needs airing !
Having thoroughly enjoyed attending the annual Warwick show since it began many years ago,
and exhibiting myself on my clubs 'best in show 3 years on the trot' - KLMBC stand,
I feel I speak for many modellers who see the writing on the wall regarding Warwick shows future.

Talking to traders, club members and general show punters over many years,
one factor constantly rears its ugly head - RIDICULOUS FEES CHARGED TO TRADERS !

Put simply -
Punters attend the show to purchase kits and building materials etc - all bought from traders.

Traders numbers are falling at Warwick - mainly due to high fees charged !
(yes, granted a recent retirement - but big names forced to run their own events !! - we all know why).

No traders = NO punters = NO SHOW - it's not rocket science - wake up Meridienne.

Ok a few have gone . That dosnt come close to the 50% to 60% drop in traders since this show at its highest.
But the Bluk are still out there trading , There is a lot they can be done.  Number ONE IS STAND COST . Speak to the traders who are not there but still trading and ask them see what they say?
It is up to the orginser to prove to traders its worth there while trading at that show. Yet year after year we see less traders. Yet at other model shows we see traders who have droped out of the International model boat show trading . Why better terms .

Obviously the show is a commercial event, otherwise it wouldn't be held. It isn't 'not for profit' like Blackpool.

But assuming that the profit margin at Warwick is 'reasonable' and, no I have no idea what that level might be, how would people feel about paying say a couple of pounds more for entry to allow rates to traders to be cut? Again, I have no idea whether that would 'rebalance' the show but Meridienne won't run it at a loss and you can't expect them to.

Overall it is a pretty good event, centrally situated in England (sorry Wales, Scotland etc.) and it would be a great shame to see it go. As things stand you can see lots of great models, buy stuff and meet up with people you rarely see or only communicate with on the Forums plus there is the steak & kidney pie of course. That's all got to be worth something hasn't it?

I find the number of members on the forum saying that the numbers of visitors were down very odd- I watched the main entrance on the Saturday and Sunday mornings to see what the results of the switch to two days would have on them and I thought the numbers (especially on the Saturday) were up compared to the three days. The amount of visitors on the Saturday morning queuing outside was certainly up on previous years with the queue into the car park. And when the doors did open the flow of traffic didn’t slow down until after a good 20 minutes.
I seriously thought the footfall was higher than others are saying as I could barely move around my stand and didn’t have a chance to get to the cafe until 2pm! One other point I’d like to make was that there were still a lot of visitors still in the hall when it closed at 5pm which is something I have never seen at this show.
As Colin pointed out that the weather didn’t help and I was told that people had to be turned away from the car park due to the muddy conditions and that it was full in its current condition.

However I do agree that the number of traders does need to be addressed and fingers crossed the organisers will try to correct this at future shows, I’m sure that traders would return if a deal was to be had but this is entirely up to Meridenne and not for us to say how it would be negotiated.
I enjoy this show a lot as it is in a relatively central location allowing many clubs to attend and would be very upset to see it disappear. So please criticise but be constructive as endless criticism which serves just to undermine a show won’t help us as a hobby

And to answer Colin from an earlier post he made- yes, I hope to have Invincible to be finished completely by Warwick next year.

Thank you gentlemen for the comments, 'the elephant in the room' is now exposed and hopefully something may happen,
no-one wants to see our great annual event disappear with so much in its favour.

A thought to bounce around if I may - Meridienne successfully merged the trucks and vehicles section into the show,
I'm guessing to help bolster interest and therefore coffers.
What about another branch of the hobby? possibly aircraft or a sub division of model aircraft - the obvious indoor flying.
(no shortage of traders, products cross over into the boat world, SLEC and Component Shop already attend major model aircraft shows).

When the Model Engineering exhibition event is staged, the exhibition hall transforms into a huge light airy space,
with the addition of a giant cream marquee tacked onto the left hand side of the building,
stretching from the entrance/ticket area down to the restaurant steps -
walls are removed and the hall spills into a lovely light space, complete with extra catering outfits etc,
ideal for indoor aircraft flying and lots of space for extra stands.

If something along the lines of this may save the show - why not !
I've focused on indoor flying because of similar skill levels involved, static displays similar to our boats could be staged,
with the added bonus of the amazing spectacle of flying museum quality models,
or could we add more boat club stands ?? - blue touch paper lit, retires to a safe distance.  Zippy

Scale "museum quality" indoor model flying is very specialist, normally held in very large venues and only practiced by the few. Most radio control indoor flying is of simple foam type models that are easily mended after mid air collisions and meeting the very hard concrete floors + small helicopters. It could be done on a demonstration basis but I doubt that you would attract large numbers. Free flight indoor models require even more space.

The admittedly much smaller Midhurst Modellers Exhibition in Sussex successfully combines model boats and model trains 40&/40% with the remaining 20% devoted to miscellaneous modelling. Personally I always like looking at model railways and have zero interest in model trucks etc.

However the Internationa N Gauge show is already held in September at Warwick and no doubt the railway people have their own schedule of shows. I have no idea what the attendance profile of railway modellers is these days, obviously trains are more popular than boats overall.

No need to be concerned about the number of model boaters attending a model boat show. There'll be a huge influx as the model aircraft chaps get fed up with all their registration shenanigans for all their models and model boats become the next best option.
I was going to venture into a craft over 250grams, but the recently introduced restrictions have completely put me off the project.
Amazon - 1, me - 0.,  just the result they want!!!

This is a lot of fuss about very little. A £9 fee and a very simple internet multiple choice test that only demands you know what responsible flyers have always done anyway is not really an issue. If it puts anyone off it will only be the non committed flyers who might become non committed boaters. These are not your scale model show visitors.

You don't register your models as I understand it but rather you just have to have your flyer number on the model somewhere so that you can be identified from the model.

Legally a model flyer has always been the pilot in command. This changes nothing.

Like a lot of shows in the UK, this show will never recover with the current organisers attitude to modellers and the traders! , I am not sure if it is the owners or the people working for them , but someone is making bad decisions.

Costs as with all shows are too high, yes, but we always made a bit of a profit at the shows , it cost us this year for the midlands about 1300 pounds and the boat show 650 pounds , plus the 1200 fuel, 500 for hotels for the 2 shows, its very high costs plus the time it takes to get ready and get to it ( even from the UK )

We booked and paid for the last 2 events at the foss way,However.....

On the way to the first of the 2 `the midlands` we broke down ( brand new lorry ) ,but its a long drive for untested lorry... , 3000 kms or more from Bulgaria , when it broke down ( the third axle control system ( whatever it exactly is! ) in some way conked out and brakes came on and it stopped!) a temporary repair was made by the Scania dealer in Romania and we continued...., the lorry then broke down again and was unrepairable at the time due to lack of parts in ( I think ) Belgium , ADAC recovered it to the main dealer in Holland!

Thursday morning before the show when I got the laptop charged again I sent a message to the organisers ( after 12 hours waiting for recovery ) saying I would not be at the show
Wednesday the next week after the show I got a stroppy message of the arrogant young girl who sells the stands saying how annoyed she was that we had messed up there show by leaving a stand empty,
......no mention of `did you get back ok...or anything like that!, no concern at all just `telling me off like a naughty child`` and to be honest anyone who does that gets nowhere especially when I have over the years paid them over 50 grand for stands at the shows they run.

So I decided to not go to the model boat show, being another 3000 mile drive , I decided to stay in Bulgaria

The show has been failing for years with numbers seem to be dropping since modellers were given less club tickets for display stands, traders treated like rubbish and spoken to like idiots by the staff working for the organisers ( the owners have themselves always been `ok` )

Last year it was even worse parking due to the absurd car park with the gym or what ever it is, now also causes chaos with setup,

Reducing the show to 2 days when Friday was the busy day is absurd!

The show can not continue the way it is being run, they need to take a long look at it and change something!

I've been reading the views of members attending this years event and thought I would drop in a message. I have been to this event over the years but I personally prefer to go to a model engineering show purely for the different array of stuff on show rather than just boats and in this way you can pick up more various methods of building stuff.
The organisers of this show own the hall where the model boat show is held every year so this is why the event is already booked for 2020 already even with the fall in traders not attending. Whereas the  Model Engineering exhibition at Alexandra Palace show in January held over 3 days that's a different ball game so major expense is involved and totally reliant on a good attendance from the public and traders. It will be very interesting to see if this is the last year this show will be held at Alexandra Palace in 2020 as it's a superb venue with good transport links but April next year they want to bring in the CLEAN-AIR for London stretching to the north + south circular again people who don't travel in the London won't know about this but if you enter it you'll be getting a nice letter from the major of London with an invoice to pay. For traders with vans and lorries over three years old and having to hire it will be seriously expensive so they won't attend such an event as an expense like this is on top of the fuel, accommodation, meals etc and not knowing how much money they will make at the show it's a massive gamble.
I know the organisers Meridienne held a Model Engineering show in Manchester in 2012 + 2013 and they had big attendance figures for both days the event was held and lots of people said what a great show but I understand the venue was pricey so it never happened in 2014.

I took my Dad out to the Dortmund show in 2007 when he retired after seeing it on a show on TV, WOW what a show and I never anticipated the people that will be going through the door I read on a write up that in five days 137,000 people went through the show and I can totally believe it as you couldn't move inside. In 2015 I went out again and I could tell in that time even though it was extremely busy it wasn't as busy as when I visited in 2007 the exhibits and traders still seemed the same, after I read that 91,000 went through the door. I read on the web-site for the Dortmund show in 2020 that 77,000 attended the 2019 show and they've gone from five days to four, obviously to save money as this show is held in eight big halls. What is interesting they have school trips to this event as I've heard that in Germany children have to take a art/craft I'm not 100% sure of this it's only what I was told. I'm just gutted my school never had trips to such exhibitions!!! Again it's not just us over here where the shows are being reduced.

I live in Bristol and we have just one model shop now, Antics. So if they haven't got it you're forced to either mail order over the phone or buy on-line.

When I think of when I started this hobby in the early 80's the one big event of the year was the Model Engineering Exhibition at the Wembley Conference Centre and I was a member of the Bristol SMEE then and went up on the club bus (which they used to had four go to the show) and I've seen blokes come
out with pillar drills and put it in the back of the coach??? I was surprised the coaches ever got back to Bristol with the weight in the back. Great days. I put
the decline in traders down to the internet as traders now don't attend shows as it's not worth the bother of travelling to an event with the costs involved as guys I know here in Bristol that do model flying don't bother with the shows as they order up everything they need on-line, whereas years ago they would go to a show to purchase what they wanted. Hence more traders and more people attending
These are my thoughts and views please don't think I'm knocking anyone's efforts I just thought I would drop a line in on the subject.
As I do support the London, Doncaster and the Warwick model engineering exhibitions every year.

Kevin

The MEE went into decline long before the internet got going in any meaningful sense. It shrunk when it moved it moved from Wembley Conference Centre (which has been demolished, btw), to Alexandra Palace, which I think happened in 1989, then it moved to Olympia for a few years, and the last largish show was once again at Alexandra Palace in 1999.

So I think there was a conscious decision at some point to shrink the exhibition down.

The merridiene model engineering show never was as good/big as the big Wembley one

The one that is now at Alexandra palace was at Lee valley / pickets lock in the mid/late 90s , then moved around 2002 (ish) to Wembley, then to Alexandra palace

The big one was always the very long running one that was at ally pally and Wembley then moved to Olympia for some years and was massive over Christmas / new year, then ended up as the Sandown christmas model engineering show then as the one at ascot ( a tiny show )

All shows have declined due to rip off prices for venues caused by high wages and number of staff needed many due to hse policies , and show organisers charging absurd rates due to wages for the staff needing to be so high in the UK due to high costs of everything!

Yes, they kind of filled the gap left when there was a hiatus of two or three years for the larger show. The Picketts Lock show was always a bit later in the new year, and tended to lean more towards general model making rather than model engineering.

Blimey I missed a lot, maybe (just maybe) I was talking a lot 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 and keeping the Wicksead club in my my sights just in case they 1. sold the contents of my stand.....or 2 left strange things in the steam boats (cans of beans etc .....)
Great to meet up with one and all and meet new peeps...and of course to Klunk who promised to help me on the stand.....and never actually made it that far 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
(well apart from to say goodbye)
Thanks for the pics Martin, at least I get to see what I missed at the show 😁😁
