Title: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: T888 on August 04, 2019, 11:51:29 am
Good Morning Gents,

Just picked up my new project from John Wills of Scale Warship,  as he is now producing a 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke hull.

John has supplied me his very first out of the mould.

I don't plan on starting it until the boss has had her holiday, just so I can keep in her good books.

I would be interested in feed back as to would this build log will be of interest?

Thanks Gents for nice comments, will most probably be doing it as USS Ross which is Flight I that has been updated. So I'll be making her post 2016 upgrades.

My plan is to make all the fittings, also to look in to the black arts of doing photos etching.

I'm still not a fan of 3D printing, ha ho one day my view may change.

Home photo etching is possible but messy. I've used a company in the link below to do the photo etch from my designs. They charge £20-30 set up depending on size and the cost of the metal for each sheet produced plus VAT, with a 7-10 day turnaround time . They keep the tooling on file for 5 years so additional copies can be ordered.

Well I said I would not start this build until October , but I've been looking over the drawings.
I've now decided to make the model as USS Roosevelt (DDG-80). This is a Flight IIA which means I need to build a hangar. I've also been planning , access opening, working functions, power layout, sound system and wiring.

I will be using two 6volt SLA Battery's port and starboard power loops. For distribution board I have one of Scale warship units, a long with their servo gun control and a 8 channel switching unit.

Motors will be 550's. Also in my may be useful later store,  I found I had two Revell 1/100 kits of Sea Hawk helicopters.

I've just been looking at a number of photos of this vessel and, Wow, there's loads of equipment on there to be modelled , depending on how detailed you intend this model to be.
Hope your build goes according to your planning.

Ray.

Hi Ray,
You're correct there is a lot of details , I will be trying to make my model as accurate as I can. One area where I've always liked , is where other modellers have done super detailing inside of Hangars. This will be one of my challenges to get right.

I know I was not going to,start this blog until After holiday some time in Oct, but I've manage to make the rudders. The master I will be lending John at Scale warship so he can make his own moulds.

I always get excited for an Arleigh Burke build, they make fantastic models in both 1:96 and 1:72. I am just finishing up my 1:72 Churchill so hopefully have her on the water soon weather and work permitting.

Little bit of progress, started on the shaft, stern tubes bearings and " A " bearings. The 1/96 drawing show these shafts to 14mm dia stern tubes and 8 mm dia shafts. Massive, I've taken a bit of modellers licence and reduce the tubes to 11mm and shafts to 6mm 316 s/s, but they still look massive.

The shafts are 495mm in length, this will put the motors under a section of the super structure that will be removable to allow access.

Making use of spare servo horns for the rudders. I've machined some 4mm brass nuts so they fit in the spline part .
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: unbuiltnautilus on September 02, 2019, 08:38:13 pm
No, don't like that!! How are you going to attach the ex-servo horns to the brass? I have little faith in most mechanical fixes to this sort of plastic, and you don't want a failure when everything is buried below the decks..although I would not be surprised if there is an ingenious fix approaching!!
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: T888 on September 02, 2019, 09:16:45 pm
Alan,
Rudder post shaft has a 4mm thread cut in to it and a second nut will be used to lock the horn. As for access the flight deck will be removable. I don't like making models that I can't having access to rudders and therefore I always design the model to give good access in these areas. But in XXXX years of modelling I've never had a rudder control failure.

Little more work, made the bilge keels and fitted them last night.
My method is to use 40 thou plastic card cut to shape and then drill and pin using brass pins. These give strength for mounting to the hull. Later I will use good old P38 car filler to give then there final "V" shape.

Next part of the build, will be to make the stern trim tab, sand down the hull, true up the hull edges and fill in any blemishes in the hull so I can have it ready for paint primer. Then this build will have to go on hold for a month or two.

Well Gents back from Holidays, so this week end I’ve started working on the deck.

I’ve painted the underside to seal it. The deck will not be fitted until I’ve run all the wiring and fitted out the internals.

Bilge keels have been filled using P38 and shaped.

Capt, as you’ve seen in my pass builds, like Stan , I too like to keep wiring neat and have good access to the internals once the decks sealed.

An update on wiring progress,

All the main power wirings is now tied in to the Forge Electronics Distribution board, the install and powering up of this was very easy. I still need a bit of tied up of the wiring already installed.

I’ve not as yet decided on what other functions will be installed, but currently I’ve also installed the Forge Electronics 8 way switching unit, this will be used to switch the following functions, Hanger Lights ( Red & Clear), Radar, Nav Lights, Bridge lights and Mast lights. The sound unit, I still have to down load helicopter, guns, and engine sounds to the card.

Still to do is all the servo wires and lighting. Once

Hi, it’s been a while, but after fixing the deck, down I found I had a major error with it. This meant I had to remove it and the frames. It did not survive, So I had to remake it, this time I used 1.5mm plastic card. This version I’ve install the gun servo and the power switch’s, these will be hidden but the vertical missiles launcher.

After I done some measure twice cut once I’ll bond the deck to the hull and then I’ll start on the either fittings or the hangers.

Its all looking great. I like the little clips you used to fix the wiring. Can you tell me what they are?. I normally use a velcro type strap but yours look to have used cable ties on a sticky back pad of some sort.

Cheers

John

Hi John,
Your correct they are a fixed by double sided sticky pad. I got them from Maplins before they closed down, but B&Q and screwfix do them as well.

Hi Navy2000,

John (scale Warships) has only just finished the scaling down the 1/72 photo etchings to 1/96, his plan is too make all the 1/72 Arleigh Burke photo etchings at 1/96. I must say they look fantastic.

for my model I would like to have the Helicopter move from the hanger to the flight deck, but still working out how too make this work.

When I watched the model railway challenge they use a system on the cars that seemed to be of interest
Some ran on a magnet and then followed a path of wire underneath maybe worth investigating

I’ve use motors Salvaged from H2s detector that we used at work. The unit are sealed and once the battery have run out they have to be binned. The motors are 4mm  Dia by 6mm and they run on 3volts. At this size I manage to fit them in the rotor housing and even in the tail. So far not had a failure.

Had some time in the workshop yesterday and to day. So I thought I would get on with hanger detailing, however running out of materials meant this could not be done. So I started on building the aft superstructure and its roof. I’ve already tippex the joints ready for sanding. Once this has been done I can spray with filler primer.

Post by: SailorGreg on February 02, 2020, 04:33:33 pm
Maybe I've led a sheltered life, but I have never heard of Tippex being used as a joint filler/disguiser.  Just the standard white liquid?  I guess it rubs down easily, and must be compatible with the paints we use or you wouldn't use it.  I am suprised you can still buy it in these days of electronic everything.  You learn something new every day!

Cracking build by the way.

Thanks Greg,
The Tippex tip was shown to me by an old plastic kit modeller. I find it a good way to fill fine cracks in joints. I have never had any bad reaction with primers or top coat paints. Once the top coat of paint is applied its water proof.

Chris the photo shows the distribution board installed,
The red and black wires with the cable ident number 2 & 3 are the power feed to the speed controller.
The radios plug is the 5volt power take of , which will be connected to the 8way switch unit. This will be used to switch items like radar, light, hello and other low voltage / amp items.
The red and blue wires with out cable idents are the feed from the two battery’s.
The two pins below these connections is the remote switch connection. This must be connected to allow the dist unit to work.
Hope this helps ?

HI Dave many thanks for the pic of the P.D.B an how you have wired it up cheers :-))
but I shall not be buyin the swithcher unit as I don't like how its activated
by usein the T/X levers pity that  <:( but each to his own   as I like my idea better to activate my on board units but a question please how did you fix the P.D.B down ? by sticky back pads or such ? or by the 4 corner nuts an bolts but I don't really want to interfere with them as it looks like they hold on that blue back pad  an Question 2 is have you fitted an inline fuse before the P.D.B unit an if you have what amperage is it ? AS I ALWAYS LIKE to fit an inline fuse to protect the P.D.B
an Question 3 is that grey box a sound unit ? on page 2 an did that come from forge electronics ? AN IS THIS THE UNIT that has a card fitted in with all the sounds fitted on it SORRY for all the Questions Dave but if you don't ask you don't know
THANKS an your build is comin on great lookin forwards to seein her on the wet stuff an will you do a vid ?

Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: T888 on February 05, 2020, 12:33:38 pm
Chris,
The blue/grey box is not a sound unit, it’s my own control box that houses an 8 channel receiver and two 30 amp ESC. The reason for this is so I can take the controller box an fit it in which ever model I’m using , say a Type 42 destroyer that only used 4 channels, or OPV that use all 8 channels. The means I don’t have to buy several receivers or speed controller.

The Dist unit is fixed using the bolts that hold the blue backing plate.

There’s on need for a fuse on the feed to the unit. I’ve just put in on / off switch's.
The sound unit is the longer black box fitted next to the Dist unit and the square black box is the 8 way switch unit.

Hi Gents,Hope your all staying safe in these strange times.I was up early this morning and thought I would get back to Working on the Arleigh Burke , so I’ve started on the forward superstructure.I must say I thought my Japanese Destroyer had some odd shaped superstructure but the Arleigh’s are just as odd. This section of the superstructure is made from 1.5 mm plastic card and I’ve use liquid poly cement to make the joints.

Spent some time today priming the Fore funnel, also started at attempt at making the vents. ( there are 17 different types of grills and 55 In total) Not to happy with What came out of the mould. <:( May have to resort to seeing if Scalewarship do a 1/96 PE fret.

How did you mount your vent masters in the mould box? I have had this sort of seepage issue when taping the parts to the bottom which does not matter with items that have sprue blocks on them or lumpy castings where the flaps can be trimmed with a scalpel.

I would glue them to the bottom so there is no gap and then remould. Mould making and casting resin is not the fun part of any model project IMHO  {:-{

I love that hangar assembly, the detail will be astounding.
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: T888 on April 13, 2020, 03:49:44 pm
Hi Ian,
Yes I normally glue the master to the bottom of the moulding box, as I was not to happy with these masters, I did not take as much care when gluing these in.

As for the hanger, I’ve stop working on this section as I’ve not resolved how I’m going to move the heli from the flight deck to the hanger.
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: ballastanksian on April 13, 2020, 08:41:13 pm

With the system the model railway enthusiasts use, the cars and trucks have moving wheels and steerable axles (well on those I have seen!) which would need to be replicated on your helicopter.

The only other method I can think of is an animatronic set up where the helo is on a pin that follows a slot made in the deck underneath of which is the mechanism that moves the model back and forth. Therein would lie wobbliness and possible jerkiness if the model needs to move in anything other than a straight line. These issues could be reduced if the pin has guide rollers.

On the animatronic topic, if the model were mounted on two pins that formed the axles of two roller chain links, then the chain could be driven around a course of sprockets (and if needed, rollers to define course changes) under the deck. I drawded a schematic for you  :-)

(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/924/BeuQgl.png) (https://imageshack.com/i/poBeuQglp)

It's down to cost, complexity and desire on your part :)
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: T888 on April 13, 2020, 09:19:28 pm

The helo route is From the flight deck to the hanger door is at an angle, then in to the hanger it curves approx 15 to 20 dregs. The two main issue I have are,

1) Supporting the section of track through the section of the flight deck that is removable.
2) location of the motor, rollers or pulleys

I’ve been looking at the railway track way system.

One method I was thing about was to use a brass “U” section fixed under the deck, then cut a slot In the deck . Then fit a “T” sectIon which would be attached the Helo trailer and use a cable system to move the T.But as you say the curve is the sticking point.

Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: radiojoe on April 14, 2020, 07:02:37 pm

Hi Dave, there may be a way of moving the helo without a slot in the deck there's a system called Magnorail.com. it works by a plastic chain with a magnet in it under the deck/road and a magnet under, in your case, the helo. used a lot on 00gauge rail layouts maybe worth a look.

Stay well   Joe.

Hi joe,

Thanks I’ve looked at Faller system via DCC. At 144.99 euros bit to costly.

Nice to see your posting again.
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: ballastanksian on April 14, 2020, 07:31:58 pm

The phots are not doing the vents justice but this may not be the vent's fault unless you find it difficult to see the vents with the Mk1 Eyeball.

I am not sure what else you can do that isn't fiddly.

I would have gone for the Faller system if it wasn't for the price. If you knew of several model makers who wanted to do similar things then maybe grouping together to buy one set and share parts out would be more cost effective. Have a go with the T section idea and we can all learn with you.
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: radiojoe on April 14, 2020, 07:44:28 pm

Hi Dave  the Magnorail is not like the Faller system that has a motor in the vehicle, Magnorail moves a small magnet under the deck so a magnet above the deck follows it, still expensive though, but maybe you could find a way of replicating the idea.

Joe

Hi Ian,

Once I get in the mood to tackle the helo moving , I’ll post My solution as to how I plan to do it.

As for the vents I’ve paint one in black to see if that make a better photo.

Joe, yes I looked at the Mag system that more costly that the faller.

However it’s does opens up an option to look at a magnet in a track drawn along by Either a servo or a motor,  Pulley, chain.

Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log

Hi ya Dave, painting the vents black is a bit of an improvement. Maybe a bit of grey or dark silver dry-brushed on the 'bars' of the vent would help to highlight them. I've used that technique on miniature figures to create highlights on armour, weapons etc...
Hope this helps.

Ray.

If you use a wide brush then you can create neat graduations of depth dry brushing without the horizontal streaks caused by using a smaller brush.

Hi Dave, once again your work is very crisp and clean. What is your cutting technique with plasticard? Mine is just score and snap but never seems to come out with nice square edges. When I do the snap I try to go half way then turn the piece over to complete the cut.
Hope that makes sense?

Ray.

Hi Ray,
My method is much the same as yours, with the exception I only score one side, but score it two or three times. Then I use my abra file to square of the cut and clean the cut bevel.

Before it gets to warm I’ve been casting of a batch of fittings. As not all of them come out perfect I sort the good and bin the rest. The good one's are then stored with the master for future.

These Three moulds will use about 3.5 grams of Part A Fast cast resin and The same of Part B activator. I usually get the three moulds loaded before it starts to go off.

Hi Chris the cost of the mould and resins I use is not that costly, for 1kg of  Rubber and 2kg of resin, plus postage is around 52£. This will easily cover my needs in make all the fittings for this project and a couple of others.

If you and your friends are say making the same scale subject , like say 1/72 British warships the door, locker etc are the same, so you only need to make one mould that can used by You and your boaty friends.

One rule I never break is NOT TO COPY manufactures fitting, this to me is a massive NO,NO, and why I alway keep my masters so if I was ever asked to prove I had not copied fittings, I can show My masters and the moulds.

The supplier I use is CFS in Cornwall, I know there are other suppliers out there that Modellers here use, however there product  has works well for me over the years.

Over the last few days I’ve also attempted to make a fittings kit for the Phalanx, this is what I’ve done to date.

The radar dome is made from 10mm plastic tube filled with good old Isopon, then this was machined down to a 9mm OD and rounded off the dome head.
Next was to make the sides, I did think about making the base and sides all in one peace. But decided too make the side first the make the base plate, these were made up to one base unit that could be cast in one.
The area below the radar dome is were the Gatling gun working are. This was made in four parts.

I still need the make the Gatling gun and the Amon feed rails and the base plate jacking mounts.

That's an impressive looking Ski Boat  {-) ......[yea, that is a Nick Name for the Class of vessel].....

With 4 GE LM2500 gas turbines engines putting out a truck load of kWs....they are capable of 35+++ Knots [or sufficient to maintain the equivalent pace of the fastest Aircraft Carriers]

Maybe secure the Helo with sea straps [as per original] and leave it permanently parked on the flight pad?

[in 1987, one of these vessels attended our 75th Naval Centenary ........she had 2 Helos embarked with one secured in this flight pad position when she entered Sydney Heads]

Been trying to work this out for some time now. MBM members have give me some good ideas, but they all have there own issues with making them work.

I’ll get there one day.

I believe they use a trolly that sits under helo, as it lands it plugs in via a pin, if you could trap the trolly so it doesn't lift until inside the hanger and slides freely otherwise, like a monorail, a pully system underneath with magnets could move it top side.
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: T888 on July 25, 2020, 10:19:36 am
Hi Warspite
Correct the use a trolley which the helo is attached then it move to the hanger .

I plan to make a master of the trolly and cast it, as I think I will need to have a few to Allow for modify.

Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: warspite on July 25, 2020, 11:33:35 am
I don't know whether the strength of the neodymium would be enough to pull the helo and trolley along through the deck - others may be able to suggest the type needed, its whether when its being pulled over the deck cover it will not pop off , and how to move the magnet to do the same, it would mean the magnet would have to slide freely towards the edge (port or starboard) but the pulley would have to run along the edge without interfering with the deck cover.
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: warspite on July 25, 2020, 11:56:49 am
like this, except when the magnets are under each other as long as they freely move, with the pulley trolley under the hanger the cover should be clear to remove, though shown square - the under deck magnet should be on a pulley wheel to prevent it jamming between the rails, just a thought you may have a better idea.
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: warspite on July 25, 2020, 12:08:36 pm
Alternatively, a fixed magnet on an arm that moves left right by a couple of degrees and the other end running in a slot under the hanger, the pulley moves the arm along the slot via a sail winch so the arm moves from under the hanger to where it parks on the landing pad, similar to that above but turned through 90° clockwise.

Update so far , Well This is the mark II of the helo track.

This version i made a Chanel from 1.5mm plastic card sized so the 10mm dia x 3mm magnet was free to slid. Also the track follows the deck PE track.
I ground a slot In the magnet, so the cable could Attached by glued. In fixing the cable this way reduce drag. The pulley at the stern end was machined from nylon rod.

The underside of the track has plastic tubing to guid the cable. This cable will be attached to a 6 turn sail winch.

The helo tractor skid also has a 10x 3 mm magnet inside.

These magnets have a separation strength of 1.8 kg. My reason for using such a strong magnet is due too , when the track is Installed under the flight deck the helo tractor skid is 7mm away from the magnet. Pre testing should these magnet had the strong mag field that bridge this distance. I’ll post  Further update as this progress.

Thanks Chris,
This working function has been a real pain, I have been looking at what I’d need to do to have working hanger doors. But on these ships the door fold up in four sections, not got my head around how to make this work.

As for make the rotors turn it can be done but I would have to take the stowed Helo of and replace it with one fitted with motors. As it’s not possible the make the helo fold and un fold it’s rotor.

I love those Phalanx systems Dave! Just like the real thing but squoze small.

Secondly, you have made great progress on the helicopter moving system  :-))  It looks very neat and efficient.

As for working doors, they will lack the weight of the real things to get them to lower smoothly unless you make the lower one heavy. Maybe make it out of brass plate? I reckon using a winch to raise the doors would be similar in scope to what you are ding with the helo thing using a winch and runners but without magnets.

Hi Ian
Thanks for your comments, We’re thinking on the same lines with Regarding the hanger doors.

I have been playing with 6mm x .75mm brass strips. Issues are, hinges, how to trip the door section so they fold as the real doors seem to have a central pivot so they are 50% in the hanger and the operating method.

Will have a play and see what come of it. {:-{

Was trying to figure out this problem - if it was a roller shutter it would be easier.

Could I ask how big the opening is on your hanger, each door is as you say 6 mm deep, I would assume like a Venetian blind as the bottom one is lifted it pulls it closed against the next one up and then this couple pushes up the next one that pushes up the next and so on.

Hi Warspite,
The hangar door H=47mm W= 46 there is 5 1/2 sections to the door So 5 off section is 8.5mm + 1 x 4.5  (Not 6mm as post before)

Given that you have seen the issue and have a solution to it, that looks amazing Dave! I can envisage that performing whilst under power on the lake  :-))

For your concertina doors, if you have counterweights on arms that pull the relevant sections of door inwards then that will force the set of doors to conform to the concertina as they rise. If the cable system pulls both ways then the counterweights can be pulled down with assistance from the brass sections weight.
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/923/zzMWvw.png) (https://imageshack.com/i/pnzzMWvwp)
I would make the arms slanted backwards to improve the action of the weights.
You will need weights that don't touch when the door is folded!

I have an idea as a solution - but currently building a sudo lori / murphy bed for the eldest, so cannot do any work on a prototype, the issue is the hinges between the doors, there are dolls house hinges and they would need fetling to the 8 mm, looking forward to your solution.

HI Dave many thanks for the link to the magnets  :-))  but im not goin to make it like yours where the helo is towed in an out of the hanger as 1. im not that good a modderler to be able to manage this an plus i want my seaking helo on the deck running up with both rotors goin as ive already got the motors to do this what you have done makin the helo pull in an out of the hanger is way beyond my skills im afraid but its brilliant idea an very nice to see working  :-))
an ive already bought my magnets but these are just to hold down the decks placements  so there is access to the hull but the your idea i wanted to copy on your ship was your bridge layout as i think this was brilliant but im goin to add some tiny led's flashin in the bridge to bring it to life if  you know what i mean but your ship is goin to be a show model when its done

I have a Type 42 Batch 2 Destroyer and I find she sails very well with scale amount of roll when making high speed turns.

When I worked on my works marine terminal which is on the Solent , I had the chance to sail it off the terminal and she Handel the sea well.
But as with all my warship models I work hard at keeping the top weight LIGHT.

YEA Dave i always try an watch top wheight as it can be a killer an make the model roll  as a few yrs ago a chap turned up at norwich pond with about a 6ft long destoyer an he put it on the water an sailed it out to the centre of the pond an then treid to turn to strb an the ship just rolled over an sunk only thing left was the bow stickin up out of the water as thats where a lot of air get trapped an he just went into the pond an reteived it an went never saw him again what a pity as it looked a nice model  <:(

An for my first model ship back in the early eighties i bought a grp hull of a
type 21 frigate hms amazon in 1/64th scale from hydrafibre an that was the most unstable model i ever had took me ages of testin her up the pond before she would actully sail but when she did she looked nice  :-))

Given the way warships have increased in size and scope, todays destroyers are more like light cruisers especially in armament, so the impressive size reflects this increase.

That hangar assembly is beautiful Chris! I can see why you are concerned about internal space with all that lovely detail.

Supoib work sir.

Hi Chris,
Not at this time. There is however lots of space in the mast trunk to add fibre optic cable later.

I do have the AN SPQ 9 Radar working, but at this scale the other nav radars are to small to have working.

HI Dave why are you fitting firbe optics cable ? why not go the easy route an wire in 2mm red SMD LED  for anti collishishion lights an white for steamin  lights as the sort i buy have about about 10"  of wire that is very thin an they have 12v resisitors already fitted an all i do is cut off the resistors fit the led where you want it an run the wires down the mast an then resolder the resistores back on the live positive wire easy peasy in my opinion as thats how i did it on my tiger masts but this is just my opinion Dave

Chris,

What I’m planing is to have one white , green and red LED which I will feed several 1mm or 0.5 mm fibres to location on the mast. This way I only require three LEDs to be wired to the power supply. I’ve also been working with a friend to 3D print a light box that will have four different colour LEDs and jump connection so it can run off either 6v or 12v. This option mean I don’t have to thread wires through the mast, also if a LED blows it can be easily replaced.

As you can see from HMS Quorn the fibre optics give a good light effect.

Like the fibre optic route, makes it easy to replace should light source fail

OK GUYS point taken but what i dont like about F/O is that the  f -optic can only be bent gradulally an not a 90% turn an it only shows a light in one direction but just my thoughts on that why i went for smd leds as they show the light in all directions
chris
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: T888 on November 02, 2020, 02:07:14 pm
Don’t get me wrong , I use LEDs a lot, but with the large scale models you have more space to thread wires, but at 1/96 it’s limited.
also I’ve built models with a lot of LEDs like HMS Clyde and it’s been a real pain when one blows.

Yes your correct FO don’t like 90dreg bends. But with the Arleigh Burke they have limited mast lights.

Chris
Not trying to make a point, simply that I like the idea of not having to rip loads of wiring out, especially at 1/144 scale, for the CVA-01, its crawling with LEDs, horses for course mate.

Worked on the support legs for the main mast over the week end.

After a few days worth of surfacing the net to understand the shape of the supports, I Based them on some actual photos of USS Roosevelt mast, that showed the mast supports are triangular (7mm at the base to 4mm at the top) So I cut from 15 thou plaster card the three sides. once the leg was built up, I filled it with resin. This was to give it strength, after this part was cleaned up and used for a master.

The base was next and also made from 15 thou card, again the finished part was used as a master.

Both parts when casted are glued together.

The USN seem to have wider companion ways. I looked at PE Royal Navy ones from Scale link, these were to narrow, so I thought I’d have ago at making them my self. If that does not work , them I still can look at SIRMAR Fittings to se if they have some.

Well after several hours and a lot of ****** >>:-( I ended up making the jigs three times for the companion stairs. I’m still not shore if they are correct.

Thanks midori,
Must say HMS Blyth is looking a nice model. What is your next model going to be ?

My next project after this one may be one of the new Type 26 frigates, if not , I may start on a ice breaker model hull that I obtain a few years ago.

This week I got some micro LEDs from Micro mini natures and I’ve use them for the Red and White lights for the hangers.
The light fitting are wired to the two rails and will be switch on via Forge 8 way switch unit, so I can have the hangers lighted other in Red or White.

THIS should look good Dave havin the hanger in white light or battle red as i done this idea on my nimitz carrier model an i cant remember what the led's were called but they were 3mm led's an when you put a current through them they shone white an then if you reversed the current then they shone red light wish i could get more but i hav'nt seen an for sale  but your burke will look great all lit up or if goin into a warzone then all lights will be off great model you are building Dave keep up the good work

Thanks Chris, I’ve seen those LEDs, I’ll have a look at the supplier I use to see if they do them, and let you know.

As it sunny here at this time I thought it would be nice to take a couple of photos of the progress of the hole ship.

The only item I wish I could sort out is the handrails, I contacted the people that gingyer gave me but after there first quick reply saying they may have a set , they have not bothered to reply too any of my emails requesting price and P&P.

Fleetscale PE handrails are Scalewarships and are 1/72 scale, as yet they don’t get much call for 1/96 scale and for them to scale  there 1/72 down is not to difficult but the cost to produce one set make it very costly. Specially if there not the market.

well Dave i got some steel hand rails from hobbies an they are about 8 quid for a ft lenght an they are 1/96 scale i think as i used some on my norfolk but it raised them up abit to look like 1/72 an they look ok why not try them ?

Dave....

From the image below, you appear to be using one of these small sub-minature SG-80 servos connected to the Stdb rudder. however we cannot see the connection to the Port rudder

[/size]Are you using a parallel linkage motion system to drive both rudders? [mudmap below]
The setup suggest ~~ a 2.5: ratio of pushrod lengths so that would make the servo action on the rudder arm rather twitchy in speed/motion?

Does you Tx have the facility to slow down the function speed?

[/size]How do you find the SG-80 Servos?

[I wanted to use a metal geared mid range $25.00 standard size servo in conjunction with an ACTion slowdown module for my steam regulator, and this worked perfectly, however due to a space limitation I have needed to revert to a same sub-minature SG-80 Servo.......to my surprise :o  the el-cheapo $3.00 sub-minature servo + the slowdown module provides a function as smooth as the $25.00 servo]

Derek,

There is no servo slow on this channel and yes I’m using the standard SG80 servo. I did have a metal gears version  (£4.95) but this unit had a fault and was sent back, so I kept with the standard servo.

The picture of how the rudders servo has been setup is on page one & two of this build log. I’ve used this method/ setup on several of my models and as yet never had a failure or found them to be twitchy.

As for the SG 80 servo,  I’ve used these on Rudders, gun rotation and directors on alone of my models and they not give any issues to-date.

As for using servo slow units, On this build I’ve used one on the gun servo. I’d thought I may have had to use one on the helo winch,  but the sail winch servo I used is smooth and slow to give a good working operation.

Hi Guys,
Don’t know if your be interested but this is my way of making a master life ring for USS Roosevelt

First i use a suitable sized hole punch to punch out 1.5 mm thick disc, next I drill a 2mm pilot hole in the centre of the disc. This is the filed out using a rat tail file until I get the hole to the required size. Next step is to use by hand a de-Bering tool to shape the internal of the life ring. Once this completed I move on to the outside to put a curved edge.
For the strapping use Evergreen fine strip which is wrapped around and glued with liquid poly.

HI Dave wow lights looks really good  :-)) an regards your nav lights this is just my opinion but leave them as when its out in the daylight on pond  the light overspill will hardly be noticed as when i fitted my nav light on my HMS NORFOLK i wanted them to be visable in daylight on the pond as no good fitting lights if they cant be seen is it
so

i fitted the 3mm red leds into 4mm aluminium tubes an cut to the led lenght so the light shines forward only an shot of my norfolk  shown the red port nav lights in linkpic below hope you dont mind me puttin on a linkpic on your thread if you do say so an i will remove it  ps an this pic was shot in the dark so the lights are over exsposed by the camera

Hi Chris,
I have know issue and more than happy with you posting your pictures with this thread :-))  (she looks very good).

Ref the overspill I’ve made a minor adjustment to that light, it’s not effected the brightness and as you say , I agree they need to be seen in day light.

I’ve use the same method as you did when building my 1/48 scale models of MCMV & OPVs but instead of Ali tube I used brass and for fluorescent tube type lights, I used the plastic tube from paint brush tip cover.

On this build I’ve found some really miniature LEDs (0.5mm) which have been great for doing the mast lights. On the Arliegh Burke’s the actual mast lights are small, these have come at the right time, so much that I’m thing about taking out the flight deck FOs and replacing each light with micro LEDs. %)

HI again Dave well i know your burke is 1/96th scale an my norfolk is 1/72 scale so a fair bit bigger but regards your F/O floodlights for hanger deck yes i think  think they are worth replacein if they dont show much lights beams onto the flightdeck as again i use 3mm ultra bright white led's in their aluminium  tubes as the unside of the tube is shiney an acks like a reflector for the leds so they shine a good beam of light down onto the flightdeck thus  lighting up the chopper an the flight deck so a good win all round as when ive put my ships in model shows the general public really like this effects an again hope you dont mind me showin a linkpic of my norfolk flightdeck with its working merlin chopper as when the rotoars goin round the leds show up them up spinning round as ive had people say does the chopper take off an i just laugh an tell them its only a model anyway linkpic of norfolks flight deck below

That funny I get the same question from the public re the Merlin on my HMS Clyde, I’ve also got the rotors main and tail working , also when the rotors start  it activates the sound recording of a real Merlin starting up and take off.  I’ve seen your Norfolk pic on the site you use to post pictures.

The link is this [size=78%]https://www.microminiatures.co.uk/product/pre-wired-micro-leds/ (https://www.microminiatures.co.uk/product/pre-wired-micro-leds/)[/size]

Normally this is the shop I get my FO from and sometime LEDs. However it was only a few weeks ago I notice that they did the micro LEDs. If you phone them and ask to speak to Kevin he put you right as if they do a flash version.

I don’t have the same issue as my stock I usually buy in bulk and put them in my supply racks, just like my stock of Evergreen, which is pin around one side of the workshop.

Chris,

I was always told that Ships carry boat but boat don’t carry Ships.

The depth Markings are in ft based on if the draught markings numbers I’ve seen picture of on actual Burke draught markings, if these were in meters it would mean that the marking would read as 35meters. Also I don’t think the Americans have converted to using metric at this time.

So over the next few days I’m going to have a go at making the MK 53 Decoy launchers. USS Roosevelt has two sets mounted between the funnels.

Simple looking....'MK 53 Decoy launchers' .......but space-age defensive warfare O0  .

We have them on our Australian ANZAC Class DDG's

I suppose I would have looked after them as they are certainly Above Water Weapons....

Yes Derick,
Very basic and simple as you can see when they are reloading the system. All the tech must be in the decoy it self.

Well the masters have been made, will take a mould this evening. I’ll be using the bases I made for the chaff launcher as they seem to be the same design.

Dave, I am sure you would not be surprised just how many visitors to Model Boating exhibitions, or just by the Pond, are/were serving Sailors on or from Naval vessels.......or even associated personal from shoreside

So standing back & observing those viewing the detail on the models can sometimes tell a story

Those castings look sharp  :-))

It is a little difficult to comprehend that each of those white tubes can shoot, position and project a full size invisible 3D image representation of the real vessel ... :o  !!...it appears to be a generation [or 2] further away from Heat-Seeking or Chaff Cloud technology]

Yes, invisible to all except an incoming Missile of the Foe

Derick, yes I fully agree, When I was a member of the SWA we were always amazed at how many ex and current naval personal we meet.

There knowledge however in some cases was out of date and we had enjoyable conversation and a good exchange of knowledge about the ships and the models.

With this build it would have been nice to visit the ship,(if it visited a U.K. port)  but in today’s environment even visiting Royal Navy ships at open days will for a time, not going to happen.

As for your Danforth anchor, it looks very accurate indeed. Is it a one-off or multi part casting, very hard to tell...

SO Dave she about 7 an a half inches in beam but still a fair beam so she should be ok to sail in rough weather but i say this as when i was down at beale park model boat show there was a gent who had a type 22 HMS CORNWALL in 1/96 scale  i think it was an it looked a lovely model an i said to him are you goin to sail it as at that time i was building a type 22 in 1/72 scale  an they are a very long thin ship but the gent said to me oh no its to windy to sail it as he was worried it might roll over an sink but there was hardly any wind but i suppoce it was up to him

Hi Chris,

Like you my 1/96 scale warships are all capable of sailing in reasonable wind, I’ve even sailed a Type42 in the Solent without any issues.

I always when building a model warship keep the top weight as low as possible. As up top requires to be twice less than that amount down below. A friend in the club has a 1/96 Type 45, up until he replaced the top radars which was made of resin with a 3D printed version, she sail very tenderly. But sense the mod she sails very well.

Until I can get Roosevelt on the water for a test ballasting I don’t know how much more ballast she will need to bring her down to the correct water line. I’ve do prelim checks in the hot tube, this showed she still requires additional ballast.

HI Dave many thanks for your very kind offer but ive bought all 80 odd L/C
all ive got to do is just make up the mountings out of brass rod which will be easy as im thinking of just drilling two holes  in to the L/C  at the front an then  bending  down the brass rods an under the L/C  an fitting the two bits of brass rods into the S/S by drilling two holes an then glueing them in postion as lookin at the real ship the mountings can hardly be seen so im trying to save a lot of work this way   but tedious but thats what modelings all about isnt it again MANY THANKS FOR KIND OFFER   Dave cheers its very nice of you ATB

I’m pleased with her, however I’m still awaiting PE handrails and still have detailing to complete in the following areas
Aft Hanger roof, Hanger doors, bridge wings, RAS refuelling nozzles, lockers, bush master guns and lots off detailing on the superstructure.

Once the weather improves it will be nice to see Tiger on her first feet wet day.

Yes I’ve seen that film, thought in the film that the Burke’s props were way to big, but after making this model I’ve changed my view.

Post by: T888 on May 25, 2021, 03:23:25 pm
Hi Martin,
As I’ve said before there is never a dumb question.

The fore and aft supports have 5mm S/S pins that fit in blanked off tubes which are fitted and sealed in the hull. When the model is fitted on the location pins it stops any sliding movement when the model is being transported. Hope this makes sense ?
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: MartinC on May 25, 2021, 03:26:43 pm
Hi Dave,

Thanks for explaining that, I always wondered how it was done.  Do you do it to all your models, and does it affect sailing properties?

Martin
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: T888 on May 25, 2021, 04:00:43 pm
Hi Martin,
Yes, all but a few are done this way, no it does not effect the sailing properties as the tubes are flush with outside of the hull so does not effect the hull lines

However the ballast test showed I needed to add 400g port side and 500g starboard side, which also trimmed her to the correct water line and corrected a list.

Once the ballast was added she preformed well. So once I’ve completed all the outstanding work to finish her,  I’ll post a Video of her sailing.

Dave....it is really an amazing set of photographs you have of these DDG's and in Operational conditions

The Carriers profile is unmistakable....... :o  ........this now Chinese carrier was born as a Kuznetsov

The Wiki people confirm the Liaoning was originally laid down in 1985 for the Soviet Navy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Navy) as the Kuznetsov-class (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuznetsov-class_aircraft_carrier) ......

Derek, yes I did know it was ex Russian navy, but the photo was of her in Chinese service with USN doing the watching brief  :-))

Yes I do, as I need a good selection of photos, due to the plan I have is not lacking detailed and has a lot of items missing. So I just use the plan for making the superstructure and general layout.  All the detailing is based on actual (2020) pictures of the ship I have and others in her class that are at the same stage of life refits.

Hi Warspite,The motor Ive used for this helo was a Micro Coreless Motor, DC 4.5V 32250RPM Coreless Motor, for Model Aircraft and Electronic Toys. My  reason for using these was they were 4.5 v, which means I can power it directly from the Forge distribution board.

The Motor size is 4mm x 8mm

Post by: T888 on June 22, 2021, 11:37:46 am
Hi Chris,

I’d love to have it working , but as the tail sections is only 2 mm thick and the tail rotor head is only 4m, so even if I’d used the fishing wire method to drive it , it would have to bend 90dreg to connect with the rotor. May have worked for a time but would eventually brake and I’d have wreck the model to gain access for repair.

One of these is the aft CIWS Phalanx has been changed to the SeaRAM, so I had ago at making a SeaRAM and will change the Phalanx over to SeaRAM

After last week spending all day trying to machine the master of the large funnel caps and using up most of my 32 dia nylon round bar. I Asked my friend John Wills (Scale Warships) if he would 3D print a master for me so I could take a mould. He said he was more than happy to help.

So today I’ve finished casting all four required and have know painted and fitted them.

Well gents, at last found some time and the interest in attacking the hanger doors.

So for this TEST method,

I first made a jig so I could keep the milled section all the same. Pic 1

Next milled slots both sides and backs so the hing can be recessed. pic 2

By using some sail cloth for the hinges and glueing in the slots.

I milled slots in the end of each panels so the slid rod can be glued.Pic6

Just know have to work out how the R/C this.  %) %) %) %)

Nice work by the way

Dave,

Another option, running a piece of threaded studding up the inside of one channel and attaching the top and bottom panels to it.

Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: warspite on September 12, 2021, 02:08:27 am
I was trying to think of this earlier in the project, the issue is to keep the doors flat and then pop the edges that are internal inwards, lifting is easy its the lowering with such a light construction, it would always appear that the doors hadn't closed properly, only solution earlier was to have the pull mechanism either like a sail winch or a solid rod following a predetermined course, never completed the theory.
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: T888 on September 12, 2021, 07:07:18 am
Hi Martin,

Thanks for your ideas, but unfortunately I have very limited space so any methods would have to fit with this restrictions.

The channel is only 1.5mm and due to the lightness I would have to have both sides using a thread lead screw.
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: T888 on September 12, 2021, 07:22:11 am
Hi Warspite

Your spot on to the issues, I’m thinking about making the panels out of brass ( back to first thought) or just the bottom panel.  %)

What ever method I use it will have to utilise a push , pull method, as I don’t have any space for tracks or tubes to run wire, thread over the top of the hanger as I’ve used that space detailing, lighting and it’s associated wiring.

My thought is to use a “U” shaped steel 1mm rod to open the doors operated by a servo, but to close I have not got there yet.  Spring, solder the rods to bottom panel pivots ???????????????? {:-{ {:-{ {:-{ {:-{

Thanks Martin and Warspite your comments are helpful and appreciated  :-)) :-))
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: warspite on September 12, 2021, 09:33:59 am

Here is what I was thinking:-   %)

The thread would not need to be run up the channel but behind it, that clear fishing stuff connected to the bottom edge of the bottom, the 3rd one from bottom and 5th from bottom doors, a thin piece of thin plasticard would hide the threads behind it at the wall.

The threads would be under tension to pull the bottom edge inside, then they can be loose for the remainder of travel, set back from the inside channel is another thread that is on a sail winch type mechanism that travels from the bottom door to pull up to the where the bottom is flat at the top of travel, it is pulling sightly towards the inside - but due to the travel of the doors it cannot pull inside, the loop of the fishing line goes over a solid pulley / pin at the top (thats where this tension comes from if the pin is set back from the door), the lifting mechanism is under the deck as there is no space in the upper structure above the door.

The doors would need to be made of brass as it would not be long before the test item shown would fall apart or wear away, there would be a solid pulley / pin at the base as well, the only issue is a bar that would move into position at the other side of the door to push it back to being flat and therefore put the lines at the bases of the door under tension again.

The concept is in my head, the issue is drawing it to scale to see if it would work and how to make it at this scale.

What popped into my head was three designs that are out there they would need investigating to provide possible linkage designs.
1st who remembers the old school louvered windows - where pulling a lever down or up the glass panes would move at the same angle to be opened the issue was linking an opposite angled window and pushing them up.
2nd Louvered blinds - again the issue was it being pulled up and down, the same concept off the bottom door can be employed, its remembering that the centre is inside the door not on its travel in the channel pins, also space constrains mean any motors need to be under the deck.
3rd the solid linkage, its like the lock on a filing cabinet, a flat bar runner up the back of the doors slide with little ledges, as its pushed up, little corresponding ledges on the doors that dont interfere with each other are pushed up by the lifter - the upper two could only make contact when the doors need moving from the vertical, the bottom one could push up the bottom and the others up as one, ideally the upper two from one side and the bottom on the other side - why, the two upper ones would interfere with the roof as they got closer.

You have to see the images in my head  {-) %%
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: MartinC on September 12, 2021, 11:16:24 am
Hi Dave,

I know I'm being overly simplistic, so apologies.  If you install brass rod longitudinally through each door, pierce a hole or cut a slot, or event a small flat at the end to serve as an attachment point leaving the rod so it can rotate within the door and fit a cable on one side, such as a brake cable of a push bike or similar, then you could actuate it.  In my head that would enable the action on both sides.

Obviously this is challenging because of size.  Now I must get back to what I should be doing.

All the best Martin

Do I assume that its a solid rod link pushing the bottom door up and the rest follow suit until end of travel?
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: T888 on September 25, 2021, 11:40:39 am
Warspite, Yes your assumption is correct, there are two solid push rods one for each side. These can be adjusted to inshore an equal push. The weight of the doors allow them to free fall ( close) as the push rods are retracted.

Not yet.

I am making good progress on another long term project, but that has stalled while I build and paint some sample models for my range of military kits and figures. The ressurgant show season beckons.

I hope to complete the long term project next year and then tidy away it's excess parts and gubbins and then consider where to go next.
I have several model boat projects under way with one actually really near completion, I mean its railings, flags and bigger props near!

Funds may well be a problem next year so things may be cut back to hulls and completing projects rather than be stereotypically hobbyist, starting new projects every few months. There's no harm with that, and it is one facet of a hobby which is as valid as building one at a time with no deviations, but one has to be sure of their budgetting  :D

Sorry for the long topic hi-jack there!

Thats fine Ian, just pleased to hear from you and that your OK.

Yes budgets and funding will be in short supply for the up coming time, but with making my own fittings and running gear, my modelling is a little protected. Also that I have several GRP hulls /projects awaiting, so know out laying there. It just time %% %%

Don’t talk to me about railings  {:-{  been awaiting a long time for PE railings for this project and now will be looking at making my own.

Hi Chris,
Each fret holds 150 x 5 hole stanchions, 150 x 3 hole stanchions, 75 x 2 hole angled mast stanchions, 150 x 2 hole stanchions and 15 davit stanchion. The mast ones will be the first to be fitted, also I’m hoping as they are nickel they will be stronger that brass.

Good luck with the stanchions. I think mine will need some struts soldered on to keep things taut as they go around curves and want to lean inwards etc.

Thank you Ian,

The stanchions on the actual ship/USN are very untidy, un-uniformed (The Stb side of the aft superstructure has 5 hole stanchions the Port side has two and three hole  :D ) and they also angle inboard, unlike the Royal Navy ship stanchion which tidy uniformed

That's interesting Dave. I suppose they are meant to fold down at any point for action and maybe they use a different fixing system that our RN do.

Ian,

Some of the two holed units fold out board 180drg and rest on supports, some of the five hole are hinged and fold at hole three. But they also have Two, Three and five hole fixed, it also looks like the USN does not like Or no how the bend curves  {-)

Hi Chris,

Will do but I’m still slogging my way through the handrails. However during the research of the ship stanchion locations, I’ve found that there is a lot more detailing (which was not on the Drawings) to be put on the hanger roof, aft superstructure and the foredeck. So my list of things to do has grown. {:-{

Warspite Derek,

Answers to the first question paint will not get repair until she goes in for refit  {-) {-)

Remaining fittings that need doing are

RU Lockers 14 off
Flag locker 2 off
RAS Fuel nozzles and hoses 4 off
Detailing on the aft of the forward super structure
Detail on the aft superstructure , light, load speakers , vents and other little bits.
Bushmaster guns 2 off
Flags 2 off
Bridge wing markings
Search light on the bridge wings 4 off
Eyelets along the hull lots  %%
Hull brackets on the stern 12 off

Second question the red circles are safety lines where the two Bushmaster gun mount go.

Dave....

This quick changeout capability for the GE LM 2500 engines [for FFG's] was one of the elements in the case put forward by Navy to the US Congress for the $ grant to proceed with the Class build

The Arleigh's have x 4 of the same GE LM2500 series engines [same frame {box size} engine] as the FFG's but with higher kW power burner anciliaries

So from this I assume US Navy Design would not change any of the modular box frame rail size for engine changeout for the Arleigh Class

I see your feint red lines for the hatches ...I am sure the engine box could exit the superstructure, vertically  on the rails, as long is were from that same envelope box size

When you mentioned the RN & a Type 42, I understand they are powered by a RR Olympus gas turbine [edit....this is incorrect.... and a smaller?? RR gas turbine, together a diesel.. not sure]. The was also a 20/20 report that suggested the Type 42 should have incorporated two identical Olympus turbines, over the penny pinching , but lower-powered second smaller RR turbine

Your correct they have not changed the frame size, they have even kept the same frame size on the DDG 1001.

I did fine the RN engine change out was done in July 1982 on HMS Exeter when she was along side the support ship. It toke three days.

I noticed the danger area is a little small on the actual vessel, as the barrel rotating at speed would seriously hurt someone if it swung round when especially depressed  :o
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: derekwarner on February 13, 2022, 12:56:27 pm
So the arc of fire for the Bushman mount is probably 180 degrees included angle, running parallel with the line of the hull

The zone arc marked on the deck as Danger Area is also the non-pointing zone where the barrel cannot enter or be extended [in operatioinal use]...so the Danger Area is only a Danger when the mount is in manual/maintenance control, or re-ammunitioning mode, where the mount can be driver approx 45 degrees inboard into the buffer on either side

The configuration MOD Class shown here, is an unmanned mount, controlled via closed-circuit video to a remote operator station. the only time human intervention is required is to reload a cartridge box of bullets [or clearing a jam >>:-( ] The seeing eyed dome on the top even has nighttime target recognition without any external light source projected....a cousin to darklight viewing goggles

The Bushmaster mountings for Naval [marine] applications have certain similarities or design features to the CIWS mountings

[I am not sure why the 2 x [expanded mesh] maintenance stands mounted as withdrawn upwards are mounted at different heights?  :o

Derek, Warspite
The mesh plateform are for manual operation and maintenance. Also you can see the manual trigger and recoil rests are folded on the top of the gun.

I agree the red danger zone could be when the mount is in manual.
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: warspite on February 14, 2022, 01:20:50 pm
My comment was in the event of a major malfunction if someone one stood by the edge of the red zone at the hand rail and the thing suddenly came to life and swung around erratically - hence MAJOR malfunction  ;D , some of us have seen equipment doing spurious things that the program executes for some inexplicable reason  %)
Title: Re: 1/96 scale Arleigh Burke destroyer Build log
Post by: T888 on February 14, 2022, 02:01:21 pm
Hi Warspite,

I’ve Looking at the Red lines markings on DDGs and it looks that they are set so the arc of gun barrel is in side the red zone. This is what I’ve reproduced on my model. The first photo I used should the gun mount, seems not to be a DDG (missed named)

I would have assumed that when the gun mount is in operation, safety rules , would be all crew must stand outside of the red line and behind the operator.

I’ve not seen any signage on DDGs saying this mount my train/move with out warring as on RN ships.

As for power, I’ve been able to tested mine as it was installed. My power is taken from two 12v NIMH packs, during sea trials they seem to give good run time with all functions working.

I’ve cut my work list down by three items ok2  but during the research I found more detail items missing   >>:-( >>:-(

Slow progress but I have done a bit more detailing and also made a SCOM Dome that had been missed. As for the Bushmaster guns, I’ve modified the platforms as they were a bit to big on the Rev 1.

Once the weather improves I’ll be giving the hole model a good clean to remove the dust that has been building up. Then once that has been completed I’ll give the hole model a final coat of Tamiya flat varnish.

HI DAVE just looking through your build an if i remember rightly you made your helo go in an out of the hanger bay dint you so how do you get on doin this as to me it looks like your main helo rotars are fixed outwards so or are they hinged ? or do you just take them off before movin the chopper into the hangar bay ?

Hi Chris,

I have two options,  which are to have one helo ready for flight and this one has a motor, the second is the one with folded rotors  and tail folded which does come out of the hanger by using the magnets and a sail winch. As for the doors they can’t be made working due to not enough space under the flight deck.

HI Dave well thought out on the chopper but a pity you cant get the hanger doors to open an
close  but a brilliant model this ship is all the same
VERY WELL DONE INDEED SIR

Let's go back to 1987 .......

[in 1987, one of these vessels attended our 75th Naval Centenary ........she had 2 Helos embarked with one secured in this flight pad position when she entered Sydney Heads]

Maybe secure the Helo with sea straps [as per original] and leave it permanently parked on the flight pad?"

I see no reason not to replicate such a scenario :-))

I would not be concerned if the hanger roller shutter doors did not open/close :((

Happy displaying and sailing...............Derek

Thanks Chris,

I’m a bit disappointed that I could not get the doors working. But if I’d thought about it earlier in the build I may have got around the issues.

As for the helo’s when I’m running her on the pond I’ll have the helo on the flight deck working, but when the model is at a show I’ll have the one moving in and out of the hanger.

Derek,

I’ll leave both hanger doors open, as that will allow all the detail in side the hangers to be seen. :-)) :-))

Sorry Ned......ultimately my 'bad' - error in choice of words

I blame the English language again  :D we celebrated the RAN's 75th  anniversary in 1987...in a Centenary of Defence

Noah was Captain of a different wooden build, and in a different Land  {-)
