Not expensive these days. Something like an Ender 3 is under £150 shipped if you shop carefully, and they print very well.

You want something that is well supported. Ender machines are well supported. None of these Chinese machines are perfect, although capable of good prints from the off, they do require tweaks and mods to keep them consistent and reliable. They tend to be supplied with cheap psu's and fans, which often require replacing, other mods can be printed by the machine itself. My own ender 2 is far removed from it's original configuration, but it's kind of fun to tinker with, bit of a hobby in itself. I'd get the ender 3 if buying a machine now, although very happy with my 2, as I don't require a larger print area.
The main thing to learn is 3d cad work. I use fusion 360 which is free for hobbyists and a superb bit of software. Still a novice, but improving.
