Title: White paint

Any tips on painting things white?
When I try any blenishes underneath seem to show through, for instance, painting white plasticard with  a bit of filler, the grey always shows through, so I put on another coat of white and it soon looks....awful.
I'm thinking of giving up white on my boats.

I've been having a similar problem. I've found that Humbrol No: 130 Matt White covers pretty well and may be sufficient on its own although you can add a top coat of something else. The problem with white is that if you varnish over it you will get some degree of yellowing so the topcoat must be reasonably durable. If it's the hull then I think that acrylic pray paints are the only real option although you can get away with Humbrol or Tamiya above decks.

loads of coats, thin ones, ask Stav's on paint techniques, im c**p when it comes to paint jobs

I use a white primer.
Matt white, and a very thin gloss topcoat.
In fact all the coats are thin.

I concour
As a painter myself for 15 years + a nice light grey or white primer forst to give an even colour to spray over and then light coats dusted over untill the desired finish is achieved .
Build UP to the finish dont try and do it in a couple of coats or you are asking for trouble .

Definately use a Very light flat grey first. Get the surface one even light colour, then use the white. The grey doesn't have to be primer, but it wouldn't hurt. Also, flat white covers much much better than gloss, if you want gloss, use a gloss clear or white for the last coat or 2.

Well I've rubbed down the offending part and sprayed with lots of thin coats....much better .

The best "white" paint I have found up to now is Halfords white radiator paint. It seems to be really tough, impervious to everything, does not discolourand dries without marks. Big tins though, but worth it. BY.
