Hi all i bought this off my brother (he decided it was too frustrating for him) there are a few problems to sort out on it (I need to strip the decking off and square the frame up , it's a bit warped) he took the planking off which has saved me a job (he bought some really thin wood for the planking as he struggled with the supplied wood but it's so thin I can see it disappearing when sanded do I'm going to use the supplied wood) here are some pics, I've managed to get the deck off fairly easily getting the wood off the deck and squaring the frame may be quite a bit harder. This will be a very slow build.

I think the pins hes used in the transom are way out of scale.

Well, you've got a tough job on your hands there KP, but having viewed some of your previous builds I'm sure you will get it sorted.
Enjoy :-) .

Ray.

Wishing you luck with the build Ken. Getting all the nails out will instantly make life lots easier and tidier.

Hi all well I've removed the deck planking squared up the frame and are attached the front decking. I thought I would get away with doing nothing to the rear deck but on closer inspection I think he put the last 2 bulkhead the wrong way round since the second to last is narrower than the last (the phrase one step forward 2 back comes to mind) anyway I managed to get the rear deck off now I'm not sure what to do the frames seem to be impossible to unglue, any suggestions (I've tried steaming over a kettle but they won't budge) would it hurt the plywood if I soaked the stern in a bucket over night.

It should be possible to add thickness to the narrower frame and, if necessary reduce the thickness of the last one.... Maybe?
That would then negate the need for soaking.
Best I can think of at the moment.
Regards,
Ray.
Actually, if the frames are different in shape it would be wise to create templates first.

This is what I would do - Shape the first frame and then build the other one up with some flexible wood. Thats one big challenge you've taken on there Ken - good luck mate I'm sure you will sort it
-
Hi all corrected the bulkheads next problem, now the side panels are correctly installed you can see the stern is too shallow so I will probably build this up with wood filler.

Well 1 step backwards leads to another step backwards, deck had to come off again. I was about to start planking it again and I thought surely that hump shouldn't be there.
Also I dont know if you can see it from the photo but there is a gap between the bulkhead and the deck (I thought the small oblong hole in the decking was a hatch or something at first but now I see it is a locating peg for the decking) another wrongly glued bulkhead.
I managed to get the bulkhead off (it wasn't fully home due to wood dust and glue formed at the bottom of the joint) (all nicely held in place with dried glue) took ages to cut it all away, anyway as you can see it's all nicely flush and fitted now.
Hopefully I can now proceed as if it were a new kit (apart from the splits in all the bulkheads due to where it was planked before cant think of anything to do about that, if I glue them back together I think it will make it too hard to put new pins in) I'm hoping when its replanked I can drill holes for the pins (they will only be for show anyway)
-
Ok so I've decided to start decking it, the instructions are not at all clear it shows you decking over the false deck by 2 mm for the first 120 mm and no longer mentions that afterwards (I can understand that as the planking for the sides is 2mm thick) but why stop that overlap at 120 mm, I looked at pics of the waterways on the actual ship and it looks like there is a wooden strip all the way along the ship from the front to the stern step so I decided to continue the strip all the way along, first problem was keeping a 4 mm wide strip at 2 mm on the deck and 2mm in the air so I decided to add the first plank on the sides and put the waterways over that, I figure the more accurate I can get the first plank the rest must be better so I took great efforts with the first plank.

Once you have sorted that out I guess you will then lay the king-plank and work outwards to the sides or will you be planking the hull next?
Regards,
Ray.

When the new planking gets here I will start in the middle and work out.
whilst waiting for my planking to come I decided to start on some of the many other things in this kit, here is a start on one of the cabins.
It's like a kit in its self, I have a feeling I'm going to love this kit, for the calking between the planks I used a lead pencil and just ran it along the edges of the planks.

Hi all I have done some of the planking I've cut the planks at 70mm which I think in this equates to 10 yards at this scale (although the planking supplied is I think is over scale at about 12"wide ) I'm not going to add the nail heads as I've seen on the printed decks available in this scale as I dont believe a nail with a head diameter of 6 mm would be visible at this scale at.
The planking is very slow going but quite satisfying.

Hi all well this is as far as the decking can go at the moment as I've used all the wood left in the kit for this (they were very generous with wood as it was already fully planked so they nearly give you double what you need) I just hope when the new stuff comes it's similar coloured unlike the last bit (for the waterways which were completely different colours) I realise wood is a natural product so can differ I just hope it's not too much different.

Progressing well now KP - hope the new wood works out ok :-)

Hi all well the planks arrived and I was happy the colour was the same but they must have used the other 3mm because these are narrower also they are not 1mm thick either ( not that that matters much once sanded down) I managed to get a knife under a few of the stuck planks and shave some off the inner sides and squashed them together I'm hoping it will be enough so the thinness of the new planks won't notice.
While I was waiting for these planks I planked some of the sides (I must say I'm quite pleased with the results.
I bought a sprung pin pusher for inserting the pins, I intend to drill the holes for the pins first as the ply on the bulkheads is all split and separated from all the pins used to plank it the first time (I would have glued and clamped them but figured it would make them harder and therefore make putting the pins in harder) I think it's all starting to come together.

You're making good progress now Ken, glad you were able to use the new planks ok, it would have been another setback if you had to return them and await more replacements - good on yer. :-))

Ray.

Planking of the main deck complete, I've given it a coat of clear varnish to bring out the wood grain.

Nice work Ken, coming together nicely.
Good job you stained the aircraft bits, otherwise some might have ended up on the boat ;D

-
Thats looking good Ken and its always harder to salvage someone else's mistakes so well done. One of the great things about the Cutty Sark is the hull is plated from halfway down the hull. So the only planking on show is above that so you can use any wood you like. Keep the pictures coming :-))

More work on the planking, getting there (mind you so is christmas)

Shaping the planks to fit the ever narrowing spaces (scharf joints I think their called ) is a very slow job (and each one is a different shape) but it is surprisingly satisfying when they finally fit.
-
Coming along nicely kp.
The odd shapes you mentioned are known as 'stealers' :-)) .
Regards,
Ray.

Finally finished the planking of the hull, luckily the top half is black so I can hide the bad bits under the paint, I'm really pleased with the bottom half though which is good since I will just be varnishing that and leaving the wood to show.
I must admit its turned out far better than I hoped it would.

Hi all well I'm on to the gunwale covers (why they are called that I dont know, they cover nothing have nothing to do with guns and what wale's are I've no idea) anyway I've made a jig to get all the holes in the same place.
Drilled all 52 holes

Bit annoyed with the instructions (and myself for not checking) they tell you to drill 52 holes @ 1.5 mm but the brass wire they supply is only 1 mm
-
The gunwale (or gunnel) was a region of thickened planking round the gunports in a sailing warship. This was to provide more strength to the hull. This evolved over time to the top section of hull planking often including the internal planking at deck level. So your gunwhale covers will cover the top of the planking inside the bulwarks to cover the gaps between frames.Wales were sections of thickened planking to give localised strength to the hull, chainwales (channels) were where the lower ends of the standing rigging attached to the hull.

Splendid job kp. This is going to look gorgeous when finished. :-)) :-)) Hope you have a nice space allocated for display.
(One small query - why the small protusion below the forefoot - is there another piece to be added to the keel?)

No sorry mate just not removed it yet.
Well shes got a name on her now, I feel shes looking like a ship now and with the lines on the side the proportions are looking better (I did think without them she was looking slab sided)

Hi all finished the planking on the bow (those little bends in the 2x2mm sapeally were a real pain in the bum, that is the 12th set of those, they kept snapping when trying to bend them) I finally managed to get the bend by soaking them in boiling water then giving them 2 mins in the microwave.

Ok so I'm back on this, first thing to sort is something that's been bugging me since I noticed it in the photos (didn't notice it on the actual thing for some reason) the cowls the anchor chains go into (sorry dont know what they're called) are not the same distances from the hold frame.
So sorted that (disguising the old hole was a pain but I dont think it notices now)

Personally I think this is a great kit (I know some people say otherwise) I dont know anything about the other kit as I've not built them but I'm not too worried about accuracy so i not too bothered about whether it's the right hull lines or too wide, whatever.
They give you ample material to build her (up till now since my brother stripped the planking off and I stripped all the decking off) they give you nearly enough to build her twice, i only had to buy 10 strips of decking to finish that off and have not had to buy any of the side planking and still have loads left over the quality of the materials is top notch my only slight complaint is the instructions are quite confusing (that said they give you a full size high quality photo of the finished model so you can measure and check off that)
-
More work on her, the forward cabins were very confusing.
The steps were a pain to fit and to be honest they couldn't be used anyway, look where they are you would have to get round the belaying pins and anyway they come out under the poop deck (incidentally that is exactly where the instructions tell you to put them.

Hi all let me start this update by saying (in the politest possible way)
F$%# b%$$/%% hell.
Let me explain.*
I do my modeling in the spare bedroom, I lay a piece of vinyl down on the floor immediately round my work bench and on top of the bench I put the container with all the brass pieces on the bed behind me after removing some parts needed for my next bit of work I set to adding some of the stanchions on the bow and heard this noise as if a plastic container of billions of bits had fallen on the floor, imagine my surprise when turning round to find that is exactly what had happened and of course as it was BEHIND me and not around the vinyl protection area it had fallen on a "xxxxx" pile carpet, of course the lid came off. So after moving the bed (carpet was under it) shaking the carpet out I got this.
And after several hours
This
(https://i.ibb.co/7XHsdRQ/IMG-2519.jpg)
So on with the update.

I'm really chuffed with how it's going (I should point out check ALL the stanchinons BEFORE gluing them in place as some of the holes are not clear and removing and drilling them after they are glued in place is no easy task.
-
I feel your pain.
Hopefully you got the vast majority of the bits back in the box.

Hi all was about to start on the fore mast, but then thought I better sort all the lower stuff before going in an upwards direction.
So first I thought about the problem of doing the portholes heres my answer to getting them all in the right place.

Just checked some photos of The Cutty Sark, the ports don't extend the whole length of the ship, They only show from the bows to near centre where the entry had been cut to allow visitors inside. It would be unlikely to have ports the whole length as she was a cargo ship not passenger so mosat of the hull would have been hold. Also you need to adjust the figurehead angle as it was parallel to the bowsprit so angled upwards not horizontal.

I know this is not an accurate kit and I'm fine with that.

I am totally confused with building the yards on this I dont know which bits to use the instructions are pretty much useless assuming you know what bits are what.
I've tried googling for detail of them and all the pics that come up are either too blurred to see or are from behind the mast help please anyone got a picture of the built yard on this kit.
-
Hi all added the first sails.

Hi all finished the first yard.
And before I get comments about the order I'm building this in I know it's not per instructions but hey they are pretty useless anyway.
I've added the first real sail.

I know it will get in the way of a lot of the rigging but I intend to tie it up out of the way temporarily. I know the lines from the base of the sail which go toward the stern will get in the way but I will leave them till last.
Apart from the instructions i really like this kit (yes I know it's not an accurate depiction of the Cutty Sark)
It will still be a lovely model of a clipper ship anyway.

Looking really, really good. Dig your detail work :-))

Dom
Yea I agree Dom its looking really nice - top job mate :-))
-
Ken, I think you have found your Opus with this model. I have enjoyed your modelmaking over the last four years and appreciated the quality of your work (even though you often get all modest and question your own abilities ) in a variety of subjects, but this model is beautiful.
To have taken a basket case that some people would have binned as being a ''xxxxx'' and have got the results you have is astounding. You definitely need to get some more traditional model boat modelling done in the future as your detail work will enhance the hull building you have mastered. The rigging looks tight and tidy.
On a last note, we often jump around doing different bits of a model straying from the 'official build sequence'. I have read numerous occasions where a modeller thought a particular job should be done in a different sequence, and doing something out of sequence, say making the ship's boats before the ship is valid.
I think doing a bit of something different breaks up the monotony of a large job, though sometimes such a large job needs completing so that you don't get out of the habits and skills you honed over the work so far progressed, as going back, you have to remember all the little cheats and knacks.
-
Thanks mate, hows things, yes I'm (surprisingly) enjoying this may have to get back to the Soleil after this.
I've even surprised myself in the fact that I'm enjoying the rigging (that said these must be the worst instructions I've ever had considering there are 5 fold out plans and a 3/8" thick book) they are the least helpful instructions I've ever read (possibly why my brother struggled so much with this kit)
-
Hi all bit more done got the coppering room done (changed the top door as using the kit one and adding the embellishments made the door ridiculously thick) and the central ward room also more rigging on the sail (probably doesn't even notice) but it's there

You've done super work on the sails Ken :-)) It amazed me when I first studied the anatomy of a canvass sail!
Yeah, not bad thanks Ken. I am easing my way back into some model boats again. I need to complete the destroyer and Monitor and then I can play with cruisers.

This is an amazing build ,the rigging is a massive amount of work. I have a billings one , it was a model to keep me occupied while I recovered from a broken leg in 1990 gave up after the masts were fitted . Put me off boats and modelling for 25years🤭.
-
Thanks.
Maybe you should get that back out and dust it off.
-
Not a chance , sails ,rigging string and all the spars? long gone. May cut it open for rc and turn it into some sort of steamship.
-
I often go down those lines myself (I love doing stuff that's one off)(some may say nuts)
Hi all the next spar has all the block and tackle added.

The supports for the rear boat station are too short (we'll in fact the first one is too short as the ship is wider there so I had to widen the gunwale to accommodate it.

We'll make a Ships Rigger of you yet Ken :-)) ...excellent work O0 ......... Derek

Hi all I promise I've not given up on this, that ships boat I can only do one plank a day as I have to wait for the glue to dry.
