Let me know if he doesn’t. I think I still have a copy. BTW, my modified Q1 was the first boat I Ever sank. Heeled WWAAYY over in a turn and down it went. I’ve since modified it but it is a fair seas hull.

Nicely done Martin - that's Christmas sorted for me !

With nil progress whatsoever on the big 1/6 scale similar logging tug - my new workshop builds dragging on -
I think I could fill the big'uns hull with water and sail this little gem up and down inside the hatch coamings !!

Hopefully see you next weekend. regards Paul

Hi martin,
  Yes I have some where will start digging, Martin I noticed in your you didn't seam to get a speed controller with yours to all reading this please make sure you get the real thing as there's a lot of chines  copies' out where  mine was about £40 so amazing value.
                Regards Howard.

Howard

I'm not sure its still possible to buy the original kit - only Chinese copies which don't include everything you got. I noticed that the Ebay link Martin posted says 'Print your own parts'
If anyone knows how to get an original kit with all the parts I would be very interested. I have built one of the copies which came with electrics or printed parts.

Barrier you are right I saw a posting from the original owner of the kit and he stated a price of approx. 60£ +P&P and that P&P would be high due to weight of all the parts, he also stated that some people had requested to buy the 3D printed parts and then they listed a knock off incl. the 3 D parts for a low amount on ebay / Aliexpress etc. They even use his original pictures for the adds.

I did buy one of those knock-offs on Aliexpress and got a 100% refund when I filed a complaint.
That is also the reason that the QR code do not work.

Question chaps: Is it advantageous / easier to sand the sheets to, almost final finish, while all the bits are still in sheet form?

....yes, slap on some primer and sand it back.  Makes life much easier later IMO if you have that option, even if you need to re-coat and sand back later.

I would of thought you'd get a better bond with just bare wood as the wood glue will soak into the grain, if you apply primer then the grain will be sealed.

Question:  Will I get away gluing the hull plates with superglue or will I need epoxy?
Title: Re: Martin builds a Mini Logging Tug
Post by: Subculture on February 01, 2020, 11:11:08 am
You can tack it together with superglue, then get some brushable epoxy resin and coat the hull inside and out. The epoxy will both seal the wood, and also strengthen it enormously.

If you add a layer of 25gram glass cloth or use some old nylon tights on the outside of the hull with the epoxy, you'll have a very tough and waterproof hull.
Title: Re: Martin builds a Mini Logging Tug
Post by: Shipmate60 on February 01, 2020, 11:11:38 am
Martin,
Superglue is water solvent so you would need to ensure that the paint coat is good.
If you can get it there try the ruberised glue it is the only superglue i know of that is slightly flexable.

.... never actually glass clothed any of my boats before, always counted on too many coats of paint.... and a spare 'touch-up' can!

It's not difficult, and it improves the toughness of the boat no end. Entirely optional though.

Is it filament printed parts in that kit. I can't quite make out from the pics? If so I find araldite / devcon epoxy, stabilit express and modelling or industrial CA stick well. The supermarket bottles of Loctite CA don't seem to hold for me.  Just a suggestion for later on, I'm printing more and more things now but still mixing with usual materials.

Have you bought out a glue shop, Martin. The Stabilit Express or Plastic welder will be strongest- both modified acrylic glues which will be stronger than the substrates once cured. They can pong a bit though.

A useful tip that I saw somewhere was to wrap the hull in a piece of clingfilm/ plastic bag and then you can do whatever ballasting/ layout/ flotation tests that you want to do before finishing the model. Small models have advantages!

Could you fabricate something to avoid using the plastic part? It looks like a tube so it should not be that difficult. Personally I would also be happier if I had not had to search for an adhesive that might/might not work and where I would have doubts every time I put the model in the water.

Thanks TF,

I'll try Stabilit first, I've not fount any solid material it doesn't adhere too as yet.... even if it doesn't bond completely, it will provide a secure enough fillet that I can then secure with superglue.
Title: Re: Martin builds a Mini Logging Tug

Don't forget that seriously abrading the plastic surface where you want the glue to stick never hurt.

Good luck.

OK, Part 9 - 'Faffing about with motor alignment'.

 I usually like to do this by ear, checking for drive line loading when motor press into mount..... it doesn't go well !
  I'm thinking of using a blob of epoxy and letting the motor and mount find it's own alignment.....  {:-{

Title: Re: Martin builds a Mini Logging Tug
Post by: Tug Fanatic on March 29, 2020, 12:53:24 pm

As you are using a solid coupling have you considered a large blob of silicone sealant to mount the motor? Easy, lets the motor sit how it wants to and you can easily get the motor out if you need to.

I find it easier to ensure low friction by using a very low voltage where I find any difference in load to be much more obvious.
Title: Re: Martin builds a Mini Logging Tug
Post by: Tugtower on March 29, 2020, 02:08:26 pm
That shaft unit looks like a very tight fit which maybe the reason why the motor won’t lay flat ( the mount maybe off too)

Personally I would widen the shafts hole in the hull slightly (and elongate it) to allow it to be a looser fit, this will give you wiggle room to get the motor mounted better and the shaft aligned centrally to the rudder more accurately, once in place you can glue down the lot permanently with some epoxy to seal.

Just my 2 cents
Title: Re: Martin builds a Mini Logging Tug
Post by: Martin (Admin) on March 29, 2020, 02:48:29 pm

Yes I was thinking of the Silicon 'blob' option, but doing it with slow set epoxy.... 'cause that's what I have around at the moment!
 ( I have a theory that all glues, silicon etc, all stay fluid until a week before they detect you need them! )

The mount just doesn't seem to be at the right angle up/ down as appose to port / starboard.
Title: Re: Martin builds a Mini Logging Tug
Post by: Subculture on March 30, 2020, 12:00:06 pm
Epoxy won't work in the same way, as it lacks the softness of silicone rubber to absorb vibration.
Title: Re: Martin builds a Mini Logging Tug
Post by: Martin (Admin) on March 30, 2020, 01:44:35 pm

OK, so I've gone with the silicon sealant ....... only trouble is this silicon takes 24 - 72 hours to set.
 Should have checked that beforehand!
 Luckily I did remember the the silicon that smells of vinegar, instantly corrodes any metal near by and I removed the motor etc.

OK, all glues set.... unfortunately, something must have shifted, while clamping I guess....  {:-{

Anyway, not too bad, just a quick bit of fettling with a mini drill ( lower the arf end of the motor ) and alignment regained.  :-)

Martin

The structure of these kits seems very complicated and must make the already limited internal space even smaller. I have also asked this question in the Q3 thread to see if there is any difference

What thickness ply do they use for the Q1 kit?

It looks complicated but;

1. I'm ham-fisted!
2. It's self jigging,
3. Same as the Q3,ie. 3mm

 Martian    ok2

Thank you.

I am guessing that 3mm is the structure ply but what about the bottom, sides & deck?

OK, it's obvious once you see it...... with the prop guard / rudder bracket glued in place.... I can't fit the rudder... "Doh!"

(https://www.modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/images/2020/04/16/snapshot19.jpg) (https://www.modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/image/ZwNZZ)

I NOW know why TugTower said; "Been working on the detachable part of the skeg for rudder access today....."   {:-{
https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,64715.msg687467.html#msg687467

Possible fixes that present themselves to be are:
1. Break it free and fit the rudder and not tell anyone,
2. Bend it a bit, fit the rudder and try and bend it back leaving the rudder pertinently in place,
3, Cut down the 'up' bit so give me more fiddle room,

I don't like option 2... i doubt i could do cleanly but I do want to paint the hull first.

I hoping you guys & girls will have other / better ideas?   :embarrassed:

Hi Martin. You won't be able to bend the brass out to fit the rudder then bend it back. You'll need to bend the metal back further than the rudder would allow so it can spring back straight.

*Probably* bending metal and straightening is actually my job.

I would break the bond, clean-up and re-fit. I had same scenario on my mini loyal build. Did it all right and committed but forgot to fettle the prop so the boss is too close to rudder leading edge. Dooh!

pin the rudder to the tiller post so it (the tiller post) can be separated from the rudder?  pull the post, remove the rudder...

Evening all!

Struggling a bit with the rudder linkage here....

There's not enough room to get a full +- 45o throw and I've stripped the gears of this servo already!

I'm thinking a pulley system....... or a double arm 90o bell crank.... I've seen a slot and pin mechanism somewhere,
.... any other ideas?

Looking at the pics the only ondervation i v
Can make is the following

Buy new decent micro sero
Set the arm of the servo to the middle of it's arc
Cut down the throw of the servo with your transmiter if you can not do this then maybee a serbo limotrr of some sort to limit it's travel poss an action servo morph....what i personaly think has happened is that it has gone hindge bound...in other words rudder can  not move any further but servo can hence stripped gears....just my 2p worth

Martin,
         Can you swap the servo around in its mount?  Assuming you fit the servo and tiller arms square to the linking wire (which ought to be done for even rudder throw), then this would increase the angle between the linkage wire and center-line of the hull and give you more space between the tiller arm and hull.

Also, do you really need 45 degrees of rudder movement?  Moving the connector one hole inwards on the servo arm looks like it would still give you enough moment.

"Buy new decent micro sero" - I crashed past the 'normal' ends stops via the use of a servo test - video in edit.

"do you really need 45 degrees of rudder movement?" - I think your right GG, I think Ron Dean once told me, 'that past 30o, your rudder act more as a brake than steering'.... did I remember that right?

and this is why i hate and never use "servo testers"...  the servo tester is obviously overdriving the servo... you would never get that level of throws from a transmitter, and more importantly, you would be able to adjust the endpoints with the transmitter so that the rudder never moves more than 35 degrees port or starboard, regardless of what the servo is actually capable of.

Not Really!   :}

It's something I used to do from years ago, open up the Rx and cover the guts with wax - the original conformal coating!
 ..... but all I could find in a draw was an old red tealight... with Glitter!
( remember when we were kids, Mum would ALWAYS have a box of white candle in case of a power cut.  (.... 60's kid! )

 Powered it all up, works like a charm!
  ( With hindsight, I should have tested the radio straight out of the box first... got lucky again this time! )   ;D

The hull is basically finished now, last job ( yeah right! ).
I'm adding the rubbing strip / fender band / strengthener ring?!
It's a 1mm x 5.5mm styrene strip, superglued on, hull rubbed back to bear wood.

The deck plate was basically a 98% bespoke without any trial fits!   :o
Just a bit of sanding an edge here and there and it was golden!
Combing strips easy install.
Trail fitting the mini bulwarks....

Wheelhouse next, here masking off the deck opening;
1. so I don't glue wheelhouse to the deck,
2. a spacer so wheelhouse doesn't fit too tight.
   ( Spoiler alert:  It is too tight! )

I tried to be clever  ( rushed it a bit )  and glued / build the wheelhouse in place over the combings, 'school leaver' mistake!
It didn't fit properly at all, too short and I thought I had trashed the parts but to my surprise, the superglue snapped clean
with no damage to the plastic. ... a good thing too, I got it wrong three more times!
..... very poor instructions, poor diagrams and my tools are rubbish too!  %)

So as long as it takes and no matter how fiddly it is, tape the pieces together, in place before gluing.
 NB: Some butt joints go inside some go outside.... sigh...

After a long and angry fight with the wheelhouse, I sort of got it all together.
.... sorry no photos or video, it's hard to use a camera whilst you're raging!

 Bulwalks in place too... curved bits down the front are the bulwark cappings.

NB: Notice the nice etchings ( routed? ) lines on the wheelhouse, should be inside the wheelhouse....  to mount t the steering console.   >>:-(

Well a couple of hours of sanding, scraping and mutterings later,  the effected parts are all cleaned up  ... well as much as I need anyway.

I think I know what went wrong this time round,  I'm using Halfords Plastic primer, it much thicker than I expected, dries slower, resprayed too quickly  .......   and I think i got sweat on to some bits.   {:-{

  So, are  isopropanol, Turps, Meths or Lighter fuel.... all OK as panel wipe on plastics?

I know it is pricey but Tamiya primer spray is very fine and dries very fast. I rarely use anything else on plastic or metal.

Good recovery  :-))

I spent all week trying to get some Alclad or Badger Stynylrez .... NOT cheap here in the UK!

I have some Vallejo Model Color Polyurethane Primer but it sands like PVA!  >:-o

Anyway, decanted some aerosol primer and tried my new airbrush..... this is a curious effect!?!

What's going on here?????  {:-{

Martin....do you know the type of synthetic [plastic is a big group of many variants] parts supplied in the kit?........the first spraying attempt appears as th epaint too thick or too many coats too early  :o , the last attempt suggests static electricity dust attracted to the parts  {:-{  or did you use double sided tape to hold the parts?......if so a possibility is the solvent fume in the paint has reacted with the tape & released a gas particles that have attached to the parts?

Get the bamboo kitchen Chopping board.......drill 50 x 1/16" diameter holes in random positions & blow out the dust ...spray board with IPA & let dry....try supporting the items on a bent Bobby pins.........

These days, Methylated Spirit is grain based and ever after evaporation and condensation still contains a trace of synthetic oil  >>:-( ...so after a gentle washing in warm soapy water [kitchen dish washing detergent], then blow dry followed by an aerosol pump spray of 99.8% IPA.......then a warm burst from the family hair dryer...the parts elevated on the pins in the boards will assist with drying.....

Finally try the spraying in the bathroom....[tiles & low dust environment].....[maybe wait until Mrs Davis is at the shops  O0

( remember when we were kids, Mum would ALWAYS have a box of white candle in case of a power cut.  (.... 60's kid! )

I still keep a wicker basket on top of one of my kitchen wall cupboards. It's contents are a box of candles, 2 boxes of matches, a ciggy lighter, & a couple of those plastic glo-sticks.

Alongside the basket are 3 enamel 'Wee Willie Winkie' candlesticks, which were the only lighting upstairs at my grannies until she died in 74. Those too all have candles in them & a box of matches in the bottom.

I was a 'Boy Scout',  'Be Prepared'.
