Title: Joing two brackets?
Post by: Martin (Admin) on November 06, 2019, 06:59:01 pm

Need a bit of lateral thinking.... or just benefit from experienced thinking!

I want to join these corner bracelets together, ( to provide suspension brackets for a 600mm LED panel... for a video light,
 see: https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,63982.msg677225.html#msg677225 )

Anyway, I tried screws & Nuts, but heads stick into panel so pressure points.
Tried pop rivets but rivet gun too big to get in to gap ( 13mm ) and the compressed ends are very sharp...
Tried Double Cap Rivets for Leather but they are either too short or too long & collapse before binding
Thought about 'Sam brown' book binding screws but can't find any short enough,
No, I don't have a welder of any kind, or access to one.

I'm probably over thinking the problem... someone offer me a bit of sanity... please!    %%

Assuming the brackets are steel then they should solder together. It might need a larger soldering iron (say around 100 watt) or a small gas burner to provide enough heat.

If they are not taking any weight when assembled why not glue them? Gorilla Clear glue sticks anything and does not come apart. I experimented with two 1 cm long pieces of 5mm square  aluminium. Now just cannot get them apart.

Pop rivets ,I know you tried ,but how about this , Knock the metal pin out of the rivet ,push the rivet in from the inside, clamp 1/2 inch or 3/8 drive extension in  the vice in the vertical, place flat head of rivet on to extension use ball pain  end of hammer and knock down rivet .
that's my take on the problem .

Allen key countersunk bolt inside (so flush and the head won't hit the body of the frame), nut outside, cut bolt length down when tight, the allen key will stop when it hits the bracket, if a cleaner look required, replace nut after cutting bolt, with a domed head nut - like you find on the back of door knocker studs (a nut with an enclosed dome on one side).
