Title: Fitting an oiler and ballrace
Post by: HS93 (RIP) on October 03, 2007, 07:43:02 am
Hear is a simple way to modify a standard prop shaft . I started by getting the standard shaft that most model shops sell and I got this one from SHG at a show . I then got a piece of K&S brass tube that was a nice fit over the tube 8mm internal size. cut a length about 25mm or 1" long on my little miter box and keep it as square as possible , although you only need one end to be square if you are using flanged bearings , and it does not matter if you are not clean the small tune and the end of the long tube and slide it on leaving about 5mm short of the end, or if you are using non flanged bearings the thickness of the bearing  Pictures one and two      show progress up to now.

mark a spot about 7mm from the end of the short piece of tube picture 3 for drilling and put a hole through both tubes  slightly smaller than the tube you are going to use for the oil pipe, put a chamfer on the end of the oil pipe on the last 2mm and open the hole up till it is a nice tight fit but don't push it in so it will foul the shaft when fitted picture 4 .

soldering
I use backers fluid and electrical solder  if it is out the boat and you haven't got a soldering iron WARM IT CARULY ON A GAS RING you will be surprised how little heat you needand then just a touch of solder there is no need to have it dripping off but DONT get it to hot a soldering iron will do it without any problem I used a 25w iron and it did it without any problems ..
Clean it up with some thinners or methes to get rid of the flux out of the solder and I just use a brass brush (hush Puppies) to burnish it last pictures show it finished ,

sorry about the pictures but the brass reflections play havoc with my camera
