Title: Bangarth Tug Prop and shaft
Post by: WeymouthJohn on November 27, 2019, 03:31:09 pm
Hi All
I've recentlybought a completed model of the Mountfleet Bangarth tug which originally was made for display ( 105cm  long) into which I'm intended to fit a smallish MACC steam plant. Sadly I don't have the instructions or plans. I need to replace the fairly lightweight prop fitted now with a brass version along with a suitable prop shaft. Has anyone please got the prop and shaft dimensions from the build kit plans?
I'd also be interested to know how much ballast others have used, even if fitted with an electric motor rather than steam. It would just give me an idea of how much lead I need.
Thanks very much
John

Bonjour John,
I have transfomed an electric tug, my Saint-Charles by removing everything in the hull and sawing (!) the superstructure to fit a steam plant. hre some pictures of the adventure :

The result :

Please take in account that a steam plant has a lot of torque but rotates very slowly (about 300 RPM generally) so the propeller has to take this specifiity in account.

Based on my experience, the propeller has to be adapted to the steam plant instead, and, for my tugs I always use 4 blades propellers.
The diameter depends on two parameters, the size of the machine and the place you have. For a 2 cc machine, I usually use 50 mm diameter
Clockwise or anticlockwise will later depend on the best direction of rotation of the machine you will get because each one has a preferred one.

I hope this will help you in your reflection.

For fun, my 1 m / 15 kilos Tenace tug with a M2B Microosm steam machine and a 68 mm Protean Design propeller   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cm_betjQHoI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cm_betjQHoI) navigating https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_n1tPVzPk0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_n1tPVzPk0)

Bonjour Rhavrane et merci beaucoup,
A very nice model!

What you have done is very similar to my proposed project. I have cut open the superstructure and deck to give me good access to the inside where there is a lot of space (the Bangarth kit was designed for steam). I'm enjoying working out where each element of the steam plant will go along with the servos. I'm glad to have your advice of a 4 bladed propeller and I imagine that a pitch of something like 1.5/1 would be about right. The "for show" propeller fitted at the moment looks right and is about 70mm in diameter. I don't really want to change the shaft if I can avoid it since it's pretty well bonded in place.
I had hoped that others who have made this model would have been able to tell me what the plans advised for size but I expect that Propshop can do that as well.
A bientot
John

Bonjour John,
I am sure that some other members will also answer to your questions. Propshop does not exist anymore but their propeller builder, Simon, is always in activity as Protean design : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGRDus7uIJQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGRDus7uIJQ)

Hi Rhavrane encore un fois!
That was a good advertisement for Protean!

I did find Simon thanks, at https://www.prop-shop.co.uk/index.php (https://www.prop-shop.co.uk/index.php) also in business as Protean ....very good propellers too.
Thanks very much
John

salut rvhavranne,

is your model of the steam tug St Charles based on the kit from Elde Modellbau in Germany? If so, any comments on the kit and its content??

Bonjour Claes,
I would have liked to help you more.

I bought my Saint-Charles to a Belgium friend who built a kit so I guess that you are right, but I can't tell you if everything comes from Elde even if he made also for me a beautiful Jan tug and a Moulay-Idriss tug:

Electric and complete, I have been obliged to cut all the top of the boat to install my steam plant. Besides this, mine looks quite similar to the kit sold with the accessories.
Do not hesitate to ask me any question if needed.
