Title: $500,000,000 yacht
Post by: BrianB6 on February 10, 2020, 06:10:25 am
Bill Gates has ordered a superyacht, that he won't take possession of until the year 2024.   The yacht, designed by Dutch company Sinot, will be 112 metres long and run on liquid hydrogen.
It will feature an infinity pool, helipad and spa and will have room for up to 14 guests.

Thanks Brian......as I view the said vessel on my Microsoft Windows 10 system PC, also packed with numerous Microsoft additional software, I consider myself a minor shareholder to have helped fund it  >:-o

I wonder if Melinda will Skipper the yacht?  {-)

It reminds me of the Seaview.
Only that it is a surface runner.

It would appear not...  https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-51446663 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-51446663)
Bill Gates is not known for being daft with money. If he can lower himself to borrowing a cheap (as in a mere $300M) superyacht for his holibobs off Sardinia then why would he want or need to buy his own?
Fake news again?

All this push for hydrogen fueled vehicles worries me.  {:-{

Not to worry , I dont think they'll be painting the bodies with shellac (that's what caused the 'boom', static ignited it, the Hydrogen just finished it off ). . .
Tho' the thought of pressurized gas tanks does seem a problem .
BUT Hydrogen  gas is not 'green' in any way, the process of extracting it is a  dirty  and dangerous task , I used to do contract work in a salt/salination plant and Hydrogen was extracted there ,I was glad to be away from there intact . . .

All it needs is a spark.
I can just imagine the repair man saying "I'll just have a quick fag"

Maybe gates thinks he is Naseeruddin Shah as Captain Nemo as he seems to want his ship to look like the one in, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Hi BrianB6, it was not the hydrogen that did for the Hindenberg although it did not help.  It was the coating on the surface of the airship that was the problem.  There was a spark of electricity from a discharge and the surface caught fire.  If it had been the hydrogen it would have exploded.  Look carefully at the film footage and you will see that it is the surface that is burning.

It is one of those myths that is now undefeatable.  The Germans at the time took back samples of the covering and found out the problem was of their making and hid the evidence in the archives, allowing the American conception that the hydrogen caused it.

Later experiments in USA showed it was the fabric and there was a comment that the 'silver paint' was more like rocket fuel than anything else.  Unbelievably there was an appeal for anyone with a trophy bit of fabric and someone had a sample so that was how they managed to do the experiment, it was on a TV prog. some years ago.

Maybe the yacht will find itself banned from some ports because of the hydrogen fuel?  I read that some new cruise ships are being built to run on LPG now.

I suppose on board they might have a hydrogen powered generator to produce electricity to use electrolysis to separate hydrogen from the sea water.......
It is a shame that taste was not a consideration when having the yacht designed.

More likely a small leak from one of the gasbags was ignited first. No explosion as the gas/air ratio was wrong. the hydrogen flame would have ignited the covering which burned rapidly. Again the hydrogen in the gasbags burned not exploded as not enough oxygen, you can see the worst of the flames is due to the gas as they burned upwards as the hydrogen rose when it escaped. What has to be realised and rarely pointed out by those who are for the covering causing it is that the treatment was normal for aircraft fabric covering of the day. Fabric covered aircraft were doped with flammable dope then painted with an aluminium dope as UV protection before the final paint.

There area number of theories as to the cause and propagation of the fire some of which are discussed in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindenburg_disaster.
Non of which over rides my statement that hydrogen is dangerous as a fuel.  <:(

...looking back through your posts I don't think you said or stated "hydrogen is dangerous as a fuel"  I used to work with the guys that did the hydrox dives -that was pretty risky, and I do admit I dont like being around combustible gas bottles, but big banks of oxygen bottles scare me a little also.  They're more dangerous than "fuels" sometimes.

Perhaps not directly but I fully agree with the fear of oxygen

Many years ago I did some work for BOC and the accident reports would not be allowed on this family forum.
Last year I had to have hyperbaric oxygen treatment (pure oxygen under pressure) and the precautions and safety procedures were extreme.

Hi all, it is all very interesting looks like the theories are out there, I had not seen the Myth Busters episode, so have opened my mind to further ideas.

By chance we have the anniversary of the 'incident' this coming Wednesday, 83 years ago 6.5.37.
Looks like we shall never be sure.  Thanks for the wiki reference.
I use wikipedia a lot and send a small donation each year, now what does that remind me of?
It is still a dreadfull looking yacht though.
