Working on the railings and quite like the look of them in brass. But of course being a working boat they are all in steel tube painted. would it be stretching modellers license a bit far to leave them in brass or should I paint them over ?

Do what YOU want to do with them, it's your boat.
You can always say that the skipper painted them in brass coloured paint. :}

If you like them as brass it's your boat you decide you might not win best in show but if your not bothered well keep it as you like it. It's a hobby you don't have to be a rivet counter

hi there, like everyone else is saying - its entirely up to yourself and if you think the handrails looked better unpainted leave them.
Here are a couple of pics of the Cervia I built and then 2 of Brian Chambers HMS Nelson (an award winning model) and if you look at Brian's model - the gun barrels and pipework on the funnels are not painted - left polished brass and copper - and the gun barrels are polished aluminium. That's never been commented on by many.

Chemical blackening of brass, followed by with a polishing creme can highlight the texture/shape of the brass components leaving a non tarnishing surface that can be taken as an 'aged look'......[the example is a 1/4" hex brass standoff [machined surfaces] with an M3 internal] thread
I have not experimented with, however a Chemical greening solution is available for brass which suggests an aged bronzing look for hull attachment parts that are below the water line

Back in the day, there were work boats that had plenty of brass showing on them. Whether they were rails of portholes or whatever. I am sure the crew hated spending the time to polish, but they were paid to do so. The Lackawana, a turn of the century, coal fired, steam tug, was painted white to show the clean burning qualities of the coal the company sold.
Immediately after the signing of surrender by the Japanese, US capital ships holystoned their camouflaged decks to bare teak.
All that said, do as you like. It will look greaat and unless someone has a photo to prove otherwise, she was so....Beautiful build BTY.
