Title: Hand painting metals
Post by: tigertiger on March 04, 2020, 05:23:28 am
I want to do some hand painting on my bike, for theft deterrent purpose.  Yes, I know it won't look nice, that is the point, it would render the bike unsaleable to a fence. Where I live bike theft is prevalent, I have had one friend lose 13 bikes in 9 months. I have had my old bike (hand painted stripes) for 5 years. My reckoning being the most bikes are stolen to sell at a local bike shop for drug money. But a bike shop won't buy a bike that is too ugly to sell, and thieves know this.

I am not sure of the paint that is already on the bike. Ultimately it is not so important, as I am not looking for a perfect finish, I just want the paint to mostly stay on.

I have used rattle cans before, but I want to hand paint as it saves a lot of masking of chain, hubs, bearings etc.

What type of paint should I be buying. I cannot search for specific brands, like Hammerite, as they are not available where I live (China). Just generic types of paint would be really helpful. One more note, even in China oil based paints are hard to find.

Any advice will be gratefully received. Thanks

Enamel?

Whatever your local vehicle body repair shops uses which they will probably thin to spray but you can use unthinned for hand painting but beware of 2 pack?

Would something like an etch primer give it stickability long term?

Can't speak for you Dougal but I don't believe my lungs are made of iron or steel.  Mind you, several of my joints do seem to be rusting up so who knows ...  {:-{
