Title: Anglia model centre
Post by: Nordlys on April 14, 2020, 03:14:04 pm
Am I right in assuming the Anglia model shop has closed for good?
Or is this old news?

We're down to a handful of model shops now that are keeping our hobby going, thank goodness we have them. They must pick up customers from closures like this surely, keeps them going quite nicely?

I have been searching for thier site for a while now >>:-( , so this is why I cannot find them. I haven't been up to Norfolk since the start of the pandemic >:-o , I used to go there when ever I went up there. I have a small boat in the Herbert Woods Marina in Potter Heigham. Several times before the pandemic theywere closed but one day when I found them pen they told me to call before I come to the shop to be sure they were open. When I asked if they were going to close down he said they didn't have intentions of that happening. But I suppose the pandemic killed them off like so many other businesses. Let's face it what with the pandemic putting the prices up with the lack of materials to produce goods and our small modeling shops closing down, it makes it so much easier for the remaining modeling shops to charge the earth for items and we have no choice but to pay thier over the top increased prices. I thought there used to be a model shop in Ipswitch but I cannot find that now. there is a great model shop a couple of miles from me, TJD Model Sutton at Hone  :-) he doesn't carry much in the way of marine model items, but if he can get them for you then he will do, but it's not cheap. Ripmax and JP models are his suppliers.
It gets more and more depressing every time you try to get something for boats now. Even ebay prices are going up now. <*< >>:-( >:-o

Always sad to hear of model shops closing down - I often read old copies of Model Boats magazine and there are pages of adverts from shops long gone. I live less than half an hour from Howes, so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

Sadly, Anglia seem to be no more and have been silent since well before Christmas. Luckily, from here, Hobbies are the same distance over the border in Norfolk and they're rather good! It's about 30 miles from Potter Heigham.
Is the Chatham Dockyard model shop still there?

I'm not sure about Chatham Dockyard Shop. I hve been there a couple of times but they are into different type of model boats to me. I have used Hobbies a few times and visited there when we have been on holiday up in Potter Heigham. They carry some stuff but when you want to get things like propshafts, straight or flexi they dont carry that. I purchased a AeroNaut Classic Sports Boat from them but I am not impressed  >>:-( with that model boat probucer. The bottom skins didn't fit  >:-o so I have had to buy more ply to make ones that fit. The side strigers are just skinny ply and it is hard to fit the side and bottom skins on. I managed the side eventually but I got so down hearted with the model I have stopped the build for now {:-{ . It is so tight where they have positioned the holes for mounting the motor on the bulkhead it has to be fitted before the bottom skins are fitted. I have never built a model like that before. I am into speed boats of all types including fast cats and F1 tunnel hulled boats, and Vosper and Elco styled hulls like the MTB's and RAF Crash Tenders and that style boat. I am a speed freak, I seem to want to go faster with boats where a lot of modelers of my age want to go slower with tugs and battle ships and that slower type of model. I'm 71 with the speed freak thoughts of a teenager, I suppose most think I'm odd as they do with my music likes. I like Prestwich Models gear but now I am retired money isn't so easy to get together and with the cost of living rising so quikly I cannot afford to but things from there like I uased to. But I havee got quite a lot of things in my shed I will have to use up some of my scraps for now. I sold off eight unused and still boxed Marine IC engines of various 61,90 and 120cc ranges to fund buying brushless motors and ESC's. I will go from now until I need to hunt for things I need. It's just so sad  :(( and a shame the model shops no longer seem to cater for marine modelers especially fast boats.

Personally I rarely found much in Model Shops for the marine modeller even back in the day when there were a lot of model shops in London. They tended to cater more for model cars, aeroplanes, or model railways.

I'm fairly new to model boats, well any models, having got interested 3 to 4 years ago. So by the time I started many model shops had already gone. Being late to the party meant I had the benefit of brushless motors and LiPos for all my builds.

I know online shopping hasn't helped the cause of some model shops but that's the way I buy most of my stuff as I have little choice really and manage to get everything that I want. And a much greater choice than one model shop could ever provide.

Suppliers like Cornwall Model Boats and SLEC to name but two, have done really well out of the pandemic and hopefully they will be around for a long time. I bought the stern-drive for one of my builds direct from Germany as there are no UK suppliers and therefore a model shop wouldn't have them. Without the internet and online shopping I would never have got one.

Hi subculture I tend to agree with you I found that the wood was often not long enough and would frequent the model aircraft shops where I bought my lite and ordinary ply.
I would look carefully at the fittings for aircraft to re-purpose them for marine use.  Electric motors, I would buy recovered commercial small motors and have enough by me to last me out now.
I mainly build from plans or, lately, restore tired models assuming they take my fancy!  I wish I could build quicker having watched a well known Model Boat person building at 2 or 3 times the speed I could.
The last kit I finished was a part started Aeronaut laser cut Bella yacht.  If you build using laser cut parts and they do not fit, it maybe the manufacturer, but more likely an inaccuracy you have introduced.  I was impressed with the whole thing.
I have just had a close look at the Turks kit for PS Sibladner (Cornwall model shop).  It has moved model boat kits on to another level.  All the fiddly bits ready cut, just leaving the very pleasant job of planking for the builder

regards
Roy
