Title: Multipurpose workboat "Viking Energy" 1/50
Post by: pufferfish on May 01, 2020, 12:44:27 pm
Hi there!

My Name is Ralf. I've build in the last seven Months the Floating Crane ENAK (1/50 too)
Fully functional and with the max sizes of 150cm length (59 in), 52 (21 in) cm width and up to 140 (55in) cm high, it is a little Monster on the Lake.
So I need a scale Recovery/Push Boat to get it back if it fails.

After some research in the www I fell in love with this little guy

http://www.landfall.nl/viking-energy (http://www.landfall.nl/viking-energy)

General Plans are available and many pics too.

BTW: I'm not a native english speaker, so please forgive me possible faults in my Posts.

And now the Project starts like others with planing and sketching with Fusion 360.
Hull and Frame including the main drive components are roughed up. Wood is ordered.

Welcome Pufferfish.

Firstly there is no need to apologise for your English. It is very good as is your punctuation.

Your choice of model is interesting and will hopefully make a really nice model. Remember that we are here to help if necessary but, whether you need help or not, we will be interested in your build.

Enak is a massive crane! I think that you are unusual as most modellers I know built the tug first and then looked for something to tow.

Hi,
thanks for the kind welcome.

-----Todays work was again just virtual planning. This boat has almost no freeboard. Together with the asymetrical position of the cabin I can't use the usual technique with a coaming under the cabin. After drawing all areas on deck with something on it, I've found a bigger area to get under deck. It will be flat and sealed like a model-submarine.

I love this asymetrical plan.  The front bumpers are really on this position  :-) And today I discover a special feature: Behind both rolls between the bumpers are retracable bollards for guiding the towcable.

Hey Ralf, I read your Crane posts and was going to ask what you were planning to build next but decided not to because some people like to have a breather before looking at their next project!

Obviously you have chosen and have already made a good start. Keep up the good work and welcome to the group of keen builders.

I love the Puffer Fish  :}

The 1500mm x 520mm x 1400mm dimensions are for the crane?

Viking Energy will, I think come out at 530mm x 220mm.

The floating crane Enak thread is here:

Indeed, that are the sizes for the crane.
And 53x22 is for the workboat.

Sorry for the missleading sentence.

Hi,

waiting for materials and props etc...So the build starts with the kort nozzles. A simple turning job and some threads.
Parting the rings
(https://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/images/2020/05/04/IMG_0731.md.jpg) (https://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/image/ZeNZw)

Drilling the threads on the by chance mounted roundtable.

Ready to use.  (They will be powder coated later ...)

Small things, later almost invisible, but important. The connectors between kort nozzles, rudder and skeg. More work to adjust the angles (3° to rudder, 11° to skeg) than to mill.

Anyway. They are done. (The screws will be sunk later, of course)

Nice simple engineering but still looking good. Do you send them off for powder coating?
Title: Re: Multipurpose workboat "Viking Energy" 1/50
Post by: pufferfish on May 06, 2020, 05:03:39 am
Thanks.  No, I'm able to do powdering with little things at home.
I can't paint. I've tried it, but I can't get a really good surface finish.
So i've tried powder coating and it is my first choice to make a good surface finish on metal.

But:  It is really a mess. A dedicated room for dirty works and a own oven are a must. The rest is simple to learn.

Very interesting Ship! Thanks for the link.

Schilling rudders as well.

Indeed. Thank you for the hint. I've planned to mill just simple squared rudders so far, my new plan is to print it with the correkt curves.

Such a ship looks so simple, but if you look deeper, you'll see details and details and details...

Frames are done.Outsides with a bandsaw, inside simply with a fretsaw.
Not like laser cutted but i'm pleased for me and my nonexistent wood skills.

For you certainly boring, for me a very exciting work today.  Adjust the frames and glue the stringers. Despite the handbuild frames, all things fits reasonably good and at last, the important things, sides and deck, are straight and at right angle to another.  :-))

-----Good progress today. 2/3 of the hull is now closed. Last third will be done when I get the propeller-shafts.

I'm surprised that I'm able to handle wood so precisely. Milling balsa is extremly dusty, but works good and exact.
So, this is the actual state

The prominent front bumpers are roughly done.
A sandwich of balsa and plywood and much manual sanding. With the double bumper rubbers it looks quite nice.

The both round edge protectors are ready. Back from wood. Front is aluminium. Because I won't be scary about scratches and dents when I really lift an anchor and his chain off the ground (which implied, that it will get a functional winch on deck  %) )

The back protector. Hanging on the wrong side of the boat
(https://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/images/2020/05/12/IMG_0785.th.jpg) (https://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/image/ZjrB1)

These are intersting boats (more like barges).  The rudders will be interesting.  I have carved them myself arbitrarily and 3-D printed them using a std NACA symmetrical profile for the main body with a triangle added at the end.  Not very scientific!  But with schillings, the stall angle is much higher so supposedly if you have 2 and turn both outwards at a very high angle, they can direct some thrust forwards as a "brake" also which is probably quicker than reversing the thrust.  I will bet on a R/C model as long as they look about right they will work anyway!

Not to steal the thread but attached is my small, 1:48/50 multi cat I started from last year, which I have not seen for months now as can't get back to my apartment!  3-D printed hull, the deck house and wheel house etc. and crane is more traditional build in polystyrene sheet and bits of brass. Both entirely freelance, but so many prototypes nobody can say is too wrong!

Todays work is done. The schilling rudders are roughed up.

I've decided to make them from aluminium because resin printed things are very brittle and just a medium hard bounce can break them.

Today was very productive.  The POC of the Supportcrane was succesful. I'll build two of them from aluminium.

Additionally I'm at last able to install the two bow thrusters. One in the right front bumper and the second in a more usual way.
Very low space for it thereby I have to strip all off the side tubes.

...POC?.... the term is 'Proof of Concept'.... %)

A relatively modern day term...it has it's roots in absolute need for technical proof in defence of litigation should this crane fail and an incident occur

On a larger evaluation, the 'scale machine' may have passed the POC test criteria, so therefore $ funding may be made available to produce a life true size 'machine'....etc

20 years ago we presented materials or machine elements for Evaluation Tests or Evaluation Trials

One must assume that the moving and elevating 50 tonne blocks of sandstone to build the Pyramid of Giza 'Coordinates‎: ‎29°58′45″N 31°08′03″E' .....would have represented success in or of the Principal Contractor or Designer's POC O0

Derek

PS.....Ralf......I do like the boom extension and movement of the scale electro hydraulic hoist  :-))  ...ACTion P96 servomorph may be of interest for this hoist project in itself

Steering linkage. I don't have a stock of such things, so I made my own from brass.

Hi and sorry, Derek pointed out the bleedin' obvious.  Done countless "proof of concept" tests myself as an engineer up to 0.5MW electro-hydraulic systems, just never seen it abbreviated to "PoC" before...  Ask me what a DHSCIV, or a PUMV is and I would have got it LoL!

It swims and now all the little details will follow. Suitable things will be printed in resin. To get the kowledge to draw them in Fusion360 is often more exciting than make and prepare the part.  This tilted bulwark is a good example
(https://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/images/2020/06/03/reling-vorne-rechte-v2.th.png) (https://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/image/Z5Yqo)

Parallel the work on the cranes has started.
Flanges to glue them on deck and the outer form of the bases are made today
(https://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/images/2020/06/03/IMG_0869.th.jpg) (https://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/image/Z5TYL)

The bases will hold the turning motor, mechanicals turn-stops, cable-channels and a slipper clutch.

To take the cable apart from the clutch and then stops I've designed three separate chambers for them.
A critical thing for me was the axialslot for the stops. 2mm wide and 7mm deep and only a  self made lathe tool.

(https://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/images/2020/06/04/IMG_0872.th.jpg) (https://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/image/Z5eHP)
But it works well and i'm really happy with the result

Setup the 3-jaw-chuck on the roundtable to drill the holes for the stops and the cables.
After that, the first crane segment gets his outer shape

hi,
it's been a while since my last post. A surgery on my Achilles tendon prevents me from continuing the build. Actually I'm still unable to make complex technical things on the mill or lathe but I don't waste my complete time. I've build many details like the mast with his fiddly lights and antennas, the complete rooftop-arrangement, handrails, lifebuoys and the rearward bulwarks. Not scale but useful is the little threaded bolt, hidden in the great bollard. It will be hold a little camera.

Hi derek,

what do you think, is a scale connector between buoy and anchor?
during my youtube-research  %) ive seen (steel)-ropes and chains of all kinds and sizes for that purpose. the shown chain was just in stock, so I'm able to replace it.

I would be grateful for any tips  O0

Hi Ralf.....please understand my comment was intended as a constructive comment, not a criticism...

Do we see 3.75kg thrust?......which is the vessels power?....but not the Bollard [winch] pull

So the winch chain is not an anchor winch.......but a winch to retrieve a floating Buoy or ???

I suspect the chain loop be somewhere length of hoop = 5  x the diameter of the wire, height of the hoop = 3 x the diameter of the wire

Hi Derek,

I really appreciate your comment. In addition it makes me think and write in english, still trying to improve my skills of this foreign language.

You see .375 kg bollard pull.  According to a knowing man is this, depending to the mass of the model, a good approach to the bollard pull of the original with its 35 tons.
If I've reseach correctly the general construct and sequence is:
buoy connected to the anchor with some rope/chain.anchor connected to the ship with an anchor chain.

sequence to lift (and e.g. move it to another place):

the winch, with its own cable , lift the buoy on deck. often using the bollard on top of the buoy.

---------
aaaah. During writing, I've noticed my mistake in the clip:  I lift the buoy on the connector-cable , not on the buoys bollard.  Shame on me  %)
---------after stowing the buoy on deck, the winch will connect to the anchor connector-cable.
then lifting the anchor on deck with the winch.

after I've finished my little flipper delta anchor I will take another try to make this handling in a correct way

long text  :-)
to the chain loop: thanks for the dimensions.  :-)) but, wich wire do you mean? the winch rope or something else?

Ralf......I am a little confused......we see the digital display of 3.75 [kg] and the video is termed as Bollard pull, however clearly the vessel main engines [propeller wake] appear to be powered forward at the same time, and the vessel moves forward during the test?

Am I misunderstanding this?....

Derek the above video and the picture of the scale on static pull (which normally represents bollard pull) shows something quite clearly in the order of of 0.38 kg bollard pull which I woud say is quite healthy for this kind of model!  How yourself saw over 3kg is I think a bit fantastic and unrealistic considering the decimal point is shown clear-enough.  I have no idea what you are seeing and interpret "powered forward at the same time" -it's quite simple video really to me at least and  looks OK as per many models bath tested?  What are you seeing different from the rest of us pease???  My only gripe on the subtitle to the video is I don't actually know what a "Ton" is as it can be several values between long and short tons, I have never been allowed to use "Tons" as an engineer -Tonne or Te (metric) which is clear and was never allowed to use anything else according to "European" rules suppsedley imposed since mid 80's, but I'm coming across more Europeans the past few years still using "Tons" and it often causes clarifications, sometimes they use mT which is even more confusing when it comes to cranage or winch capacities and capacities when a leverage is assumed also!

Title: Re: Multipurpose workboat "Viking Energy" 1/50
Post by: RST on August 15, 2020, 07:26:06 am
...I think maybe it's supposed to be "long" tons, or roughly 2,200lb.  The sun hasn't been shining enough on Dereks solar powered abacus again, either that or it's missing a decimal place ball as it comes up with fantastic numbers sometimes.
I hate the mix of imperial and metric terms:  Not the first time I've met a forman who measures things something like 60cm (cm?) , 1 and 3/8" -they're usually the old guy who complains that he hasn't bought a drink from the vending machine as it wouldn't accept his old half penny or drank a cup of tea at all at work on tea breaks since Doris the tea lady retired in 1971 but he's been there ever since.

Ralf.......I have rewatched the video on slow motion & yes ....my apologies ....the value of tension recorded is 0.375 [units]

My role as a Foreman of Missile Launcher work on Naval vessels was always in the Si [Metric System [tonnes}] even though components for maintenance of the same were from the USA and so labeled in fractions of US Tons  {-)

So, in my younger years [in 1971], in the Office. the Tea Lady's name was Thelma  ...I liked her biscuits

The deck surface is done.

1mm plywood, each segment is cutted and customized. After that, they are soaked with 50% diluted varnish.

The borders are from very thick iron primer of a rust set. The thickness gives clear edges.

The four front segments are removablw to reach the hull. The four rear panels are glued permanently.

Hi there,

My last pics for this project :}

I‘ve built a flipper delta anchor, weathering it and put it in a little deck-scene.
He‘s just tow on deck with his pennant wire rolled on the main winch.
Before this, the buoy is stowed on deck, secured by the mooring winch, using the pulleys.

I like the stern flipper fingers Ralf...on real vessels, one retracts before the other [as you have achieved] ......just not sure why this happens? %)

The Skipper would not be too pleased if the Green 205 litre drum breaks away at sea, surely the Crew could rotate 3 drums could be rotated so all are inboard of the Bund line

I like the discrete level of weathering  :-))

Carry on ....a video on the water [in slow motion] would be great  O0

Derek in my experience anyway that wouldn't be a bund. It's the edge of the steel grillage  under which the edges of the wooden protection sits. It's what we would use as tie-downs and seafastenings as can't weld to wood, nor is wood protective blocks that long between restraints.  Bunds on deck are in my experience a pain in the ass.  Agree in principle but class forces us to do it without thought most times, regardless the fact they just! fill with rain / splashes most of the time, which negates the point.

I always thought "king pins" retracted one at at a time was so not to trap the cable as some have offset projections at the top -either that or on the same hydraulic circuit or one naturally went first.  I don't think they are all the same.

Great work pufferfish!

Hi there,

it's been a while since my last post. But now I've started the work on the last feature of the Viking Energy.  The front Heila Crane is still missing.  Meanwhile (hopefully)  I've raised my skills in metal working , so that I'm confident to build a working version of the crane.

First steps are done.
Base and cables are already prepared.

second feature:  the boom of the crane has four extenable segments. to simulate the hydraulics i'll build a telescopic spindle.

After a kindly support form a crewmen of the original viking energy, i've get the correct sizes for the crane top-segment. All other sizes depends on them, on my skills and materials.
First point was to build a new, smaller, spindle
(https://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/images/2021/05/27/IMG_3889.th.jpg) (https://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/image/al1KX)

My bender gets a highend %) scale to make repeatable bends. I need many 60° bends for the segments. After finding the 8° overbending standard for my sheetmetal i get proper 60° angles as far as the machine it allows

Thanks trucker.

You can find my "Plan" here https://www.landfall.nl/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Technical-details-VIKING-ENERGY.pdf (https://www.landfall.nl/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Technical-details-VIKING-ENERGY.pdf)I've build my model just from this general plan , the specs and found Pictures  at the landfall  page https://www.landfall.nl/viking-energy (https://www.landfall.nl/viking-energy) and in the web.
Rest of the model is build on my own creativity. Without my faible for scale functions it's a relativ simple rig.

Just one tip:  in 1/50 this tugs have a very very small freeboard of ~1cm. so you have to build it waterproof like a submarine ore use a bigger scale

I agree with pufferfish. There's so many GA's out there for multicats from many designers or operator companies websites.  They're pretty much all square-ish so plenty to work from from the pdf GA's rather than full plans and so many photos and they're all somewhat unique so very few people could turn round and say anything isn't right.

Also agree, 1:50 is my favourite scale and freeboard is small on these by design, nevermind a model.  Seeing as they have no camber on the deck I decided on mine I will use full magnetic sheet to hold the relatively large and flat model openings down and hopefully keep water out as there's little features that could have coamings apart from the relatively small deck house.

Most of you surely know the smallness of 1/50 things.
the broad flange in the above pic has a little bar to hold the tube

Hi there,

quick setup of all crane parts so far.

Reaching the water surface?  :-))

Checking the weight and estimate how much of decorative details I can add during a short trimming session.

It's done.

Finally, the front crane and thus the last component of the vessel is finished.

The crane is fully remote controlled.

That second clip...."proof of concept middle segment with two hidden gearmotors" .....https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ3zrHIqWA_/ (https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ3zrHIqWA_/)

Not sure if you have stood beside one these actual hydaulic hoists during use?

It is the sound O0

You have achieved [whether by choice of good luck] the sound of a hydraulic system.....all motions here are the system being driven over counterbalance valves and the sound generated by your model is pretty darn good  :-))

After a lifetime in hydraulic systems, it is a sound that cannot be ignored
>>:-(

Well done ....Derek
