'Hi Martin,
I spoke to Dean Marine last week, and he gave me the go ahead to elicit your help....
We are running a building completion which started on the 4th April and runs until the end of July 2020. We need some model boat builders to join our building competition.
Free to enter chance of winning £100 worth of Permagrit tools and £50 worth of Deluxe Materials adhesives etc.
In each of the 4 classes:
Class A:- Experienced.
Class B:- Have built, but not for years.
Class C:- First ever build adult or child.
Class D:- Family build, everyone in the family joins in.
We are running it on Facebook, type in the search bar Perma-Grit competition building group or https://www.facebook.com/groups/pgtmodelbuilding/ (https://www.facebook.com/groups/pgtmodelbuilding/)
The rules are very simple. “nothing ventured, nothing gained”
We have aero modellers, dolls house, helicopter, but no boat builders?

Hi guys. I saw the dud link after the OP posted but I just googled permagrit Facebook competition and it seemed to go straight to it. I may have hit lucky but try it! I'm no Facebook user but was just a bit interested to see. I think Martin's link is missing a .com or summit. But you can wait and wait for a good link if you prefer. It's no secret on google.! Try it.

The Permagrit products are very good but just what makes them so extraordinarily expensive?

...I'm with Colin and Andy both on that one. Not that I want adverts on here either though. I'm still to invest in a permagrit product though, maybe I should take the leap and see what I'm missing.

I hold no brief for Permagrit and agree they seem expensive. However, they are a buy once product and have a lifetime guarantee. At Dortmund some tears ago I witnessed an upset customer rendered speechless when he was given a no quibble replacement for a tool he had somehow managed to break. :-))

Basically they are pieces of aluminium extrusion with abrasive carbide sheets bonded on. I can 't believe that they are that expensive to make. If they were less expensive I would buy a lot more of them.
I'm surprised that nobody else seems to make something similar.

It may be less of a case of them being expensive, rather everything else has become cheap and disposable. This product gets my vote, I have been using it long enough to have worn out a standard sanding block and a cutting disk. Roughly ten years each! Everything else still going strong.

I have a Permagrit sander I bought... must be 20 years ago, still as good as new.
There's trick to cleaning them, roll a shopping bag a tight as you can and sand it

This keeps the sanding disc/paper clean and regular use makes it last longer ,I have had my cleaner block when I bought my Shopsmith in 1998 .

I agree. I've got 3 of the blocks and a set of files, all of which I use on a regular basis unlike some of my tools! I'd buy more but find it hard to justify the cost, particularly where use would be less frequent.
Having said that it hasn't stopped me with other things! :-)

Perhaps we should not forget the intention of Martin's post to alert there is a Facebook user competition going. Permagrit isn't an unknown name, if you are like me and just wrap a bit of paper or glue it to a suitable block then fine but the object of the post is the competition to Facebook users, rather than a debate on whether we use it or not which is of more use and searchable under a different header?

I didn't know about those cleaning blocks so that's been a benefit arising from it. And I might buy more Perma-Grit products! Good publicity!

Both the links work fine. If you dont have an facebook acc then they wont work for you. Your choice to use facebook or not.
The reasion they use Facebook much wider reach than any model forum has.
I agree with Colin they are over priced. I find most modeling materials glues etc is over priced when you compair to the equivlent materila used in building trade. These companys known modlers will pay and jack the price up.

Well I'm sure some people would disagree with me.
However, in my opinion, the effort required to create a presentation of photographs and accompanying dialogue isn't worth the prize being offered.
I'm not criticising the products being offered. I own and use plenty of both brands and would recommend them to anyone looking for quality stuff.
I personally prefer to spend the time building rather than creating content for Farcebook.
So, that's my spanner grinding away in the gearbox.

Frankly I find it depressing that this forum so frequently seems to descend into a collective moan about how we modellers are all being ripped off by greedy suppliers. I was a model supplier once and I well remember the mythering of customers who thought nothing of paying hundreds for a kit yet complained bitterly about pennies when it came to vital equipment. If you want examples then I have dozens...
Permagrit is an excellent product and there's nothing on the market to compare, so they have what's often known as a monopoly. If you like their stuff then there's a price to pay for it. If you don't like the price then don't buy it. If the market decides collectively that Permagrit tools are too expensive then they will not sell them and eventually cease to trade.
I don't suppose that the musings of a bunch of old geezers with welded-up wallets is going to bother them over-much. If all you want is a cheap hobby then take up cloud-watching...

Fair point Dave. The only thing is that you have to weigh up the cost against the amount of use you will get out of a tool.
I bought the smaller Wedge Block and use it all the time. Well worth the cost as it is very versatile. I would like a lot of the other tools but in all conscience I can't justify the cost against the amount of use I would get out of them in normal circumstances. If thy were cheaper then I might well buy them on the basis that 'it looks as if it could come in useful at some point'. Instead I tend to buy inferior but much cheaper products which meet my occasional needs. I suppose if my model output was more prolific things might be a bit different.
I find most things will yield to blunt butchery with a blade followed by applcations of various grades of abrasive paper... Finesse was never my modelling forte. (and filler remedies many errors).

Back to the original topic. I have applied this morning and my request has not been responded to. Despite competition starting on April 4th I can see no posts of any entrants? Is this for real or just to get you to view the pages dedicated to permagrit.
