Title: Billing Boulogne Etaples
Post by: Taranis on May 11, 2020, 11:09:46 pm
I bought this only yesterday from Cornwall model boats for the modest sum of £163 considerably less than other outlets.
This will be delivered tomorrow by DPD at no additional cost. How good is that for a UK model shop  O0  Not like its my first purchase from CMB
https://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/Billing-Boats-Boulogne-Etaples-B534.html

Anyway this model caught my eye a number of times and a modeller on billing Facebook inspired me to follow his build so I think I will build mine quite soon. I don't envisage it being a very long build but more like my Lobster boat in the region of 6 weeks.
I will adopt some technique gained from the Lobster to improve this and probably go brushless with straight drive and no UJ crap  https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,62915.0.html (https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,62915.0.html)

Hi. Sure you'll rocket through it. Good luck with DPD though! Super quick but they treat my parcels like footballs! 3/4 deliveries had to be claimed back and refunded the last 2 weeks! (All items but one were ordered with RM but seller changed to DPD after).

Honestly never had an issue with DPD Rich. I use the app and usually know to within the minute when I'll get a knock on the door. I got a ping from DPD about my parcel even before an email from CMB. Packaging needs to be robust enough to protect contents against all possibilities. Royal Mail seem to be saving my post for alternate days during Covid or until there is enough to make a trip worthwhile. My mail from Ireland is taking two weeks  %%

...I've had terrible problems with DPD this lock-down (they were OK before).  I go to great lengths to speify RM / Parcelforce then you get the message after dispatch its DPD.  You don't even get chance to inspect these days as DPD mark it as delivered as soon as you open the door and the smashed parcel is on the doorstep.  DPD are quoting 7 days+ delivery to me up in Inverness still but delivering almost next day, but personally I'd rather wait and get things intact, some things I ordered for my printer were one-offs aparenty so no good damaged, or rather if they can be used still, not paying for delivery damage!  Least they're not as bad as yodel/hermes!  They just steal stuff but report delivered so you never see them and no way f contact!!!  Neermind, it'll work out OK but if I ordered it I feel sure there would be another refund coming because of DPD.

BTW by CMB  I presume Cornwall Model Boats?  I always use regular mail with them.  It's always been faster than any courier.  I use them here and abroad to my apartment in France.

...anyhow, I apologise.  On with the build when you get it!

A slow down now while a Raboesch maintenance free prop shaft arrives from CMB.

I've ordered the corresponding size as the existing length will work.
Also enquired with Simon about a 35mm 3 blade prop but most likely a 30mm will be more appropriate as more efficient than the plastic offering.

There will be no UJ in the drive but a solid 3mm to 4mm brass coupler. I will build the motor support under the motor while connected through. I have in stock a 28/30 920KV brushless which should suffice.

Maybe not obvious but I've glued the build support parts direct to my bench top with CA rather than a separate board. Being kitchen worktop anything attached with CA will chisel off with an Xacto blade no problem  :-)

Yes indeed
You helped me get it from Les, only took about three months  {-)
Other models came to the fore but I already started a build thread quite some time ago

My memory is getting terrible Andy know I remember, get her started she makes a nice model , but alter the front of the keel its wrong I told them about it when I made the plug but they decided just to leave it  :-))

That looks like a nice little boat Andy and with it being a Billings it should go together very nicely  :-))

Kit quality looks a big improvement over the one I gave up building 30 years ago !
I have a battered plastic fantastic all ready to go version should you need to refer to anything -
uses an oblong lead acid lying flat in the hull,
assumed it's a rip off the Billings - but without seeing them side by side to confirm?
Nice looking model, keep up the good work.

I have already encountered the first missing part  {-)  However the quality of the wood is excellent  O0

While awaiting the new prop shaft I have turned my attention to the rudder and there should be a brass socket to fit in the keel to seat the rudder shaft. Fortunately I have some brass tube in stock to avoid a delay.

The prop shop make the best props by a long way.  Good choice because even when your model is sitting in its cradle it'll look good with one of them on

Not expensive either  :-)

Might be a while before the prop shaft arrives so cannot proceed in the normal fashion.
I've taken out material from the bulkheads to make them more battery & equipment friendly and fitted those that I can for now with main deck dry fitted to align them.

I then started on the trawl frame for want of a better description.

I started by glueing the assembled upright to my bench but then realised this won't work as they are not vertical on the deck but lean outwards.

The steps you have to make from brass wire in the kit

So I began the day with lots more filling and sanding and a final priming.

Then the postman dropped my Raboesch propshaft  :-)

So this meant I could glue the sections together and continue to align and mount the motor.

I used two steel rules to ensure the keel remained straight and dry fitted the deck for alignment

I deliberately left out bulkhead 2 as I felt sure the laser cut slot was too high.
So fitted this after the rest had hardened.

I was correct

Then the motor and I had to remove more bulkhead to an enable a straight connection.

Hey Andy,
Trawl frame not far off . More proper, at least on this side of the pond, “gallows frame” or A frame.

I've no idea what this is called but it's clearly meant to prevent whatever is fed through it going wayward.

Rather than solder the ends of the oblong I've used a brass sleeve and some vine eyes.

So on to today. Finally began planking. This is so quick using CA and once the plank is checked for fit just start at the bow and glue to one or two bulkheads at a time.
My finger tips are lathered in glue today  %%

No building today due to wedding anniversary %%

Interesting to see one of these being built, I have one that I bought last year and am just in the process of checking over/fixing here and there int he hops of it seeing some water this year.

I didn't intend to buy a boat that day, I had gone to Black Park lake with my daughter and one of the chaps there asked if I was interested in it - it was obviously well put together and with some nicely thought out details, and he wanted very little for it.

Seeing it in the raw helps me to know what's where in mine.

I'll snap a few pictures later today, if I can.

The chap I bought it from was not the builder, he was a BPMBC committee member and was selling it on behalf of a chap who had passed away. There's a label inside the model written by the original builder, so I know it was started in 1991 and first sailed in 1993. He made a good job of it, but  time and general use has left a few marks - but it's still a fine looking example at nearly 30 years old.

Blimey, that sounds nasty! Glad you made it home safely.

Well, inspiration for colours - I actually sat down at the computer to ask you what the specified colour was for the bulwarks as I had to make a replacement bollard as one was missing and initially thought they were black, but closer examination in good light shows that they and the bulwarks are all the same shade of blackish green, or possibly greenish black. I've looked through my stash of model paints and nothing quite matches, so I might have to experiment with a few mixes so it doesn't stand out too badly. A lot of work for a 15mm fitting!

I am attaching a few hastily taken pictures, please ignore the background, that is another rescue in progress, these were shot on my workbench. Hopefully they show the attention to detail paid by the original builder, so I feel honour-bound not to bodge anything.

I was just about to close the hull when the postman knocked.
listing said 3 day courier delivery but estimated arrival date was quoted as 11th June  <*<  so I thought I'd been tricked by Chinese seller. However I think many sellers are quoting longer dates due to CoViD
Anyway it was all misleading as it came with tracking via Royal Mail. Effectively 2 days

Remember that missing bollard I mentioned a couple of days ago? By the time I'd found some vaguely circular dowel, reduced it by hand to something more circular and the correct diameter, drilled a hole for the upper part (1mm wire), primed and painted it, I must have spent about two hours on it. Still it looked a good match for the other one, so I put it to one side for the paint to dry properly and started fiddling around inside the hull. Various flakes of paint, etc. in there, so turned it upside down and gave it a shake. Good shower of paint flakes, wood chips and then a quiet thump as something slightly heavier fell out from the bows.

Yep, it was the missing bollard, now reattached. At least I now have a spare!

In my opinion I don't like this gunwale. In my mind if you're hauling nets up a stern ramp why would you use a gunwale that stuck out impeding smooth transition?

I intend to make from scratch and use a servo rod across the width of the slope as a smooth crossing

Hi,

I just sent you a message re the sound board.

I'm still impressed how quickly you can churn things out!  If it helps re: colours heres a shot from visiting friends at La Tremblade last summer when I took my mum over to my place in france.  Thought I'd taken more pictures of the fishing boats but aparently not -anyhow, they like their bright colours (this is an oyster boat though, but same idea -No rust!)...

I don't think I showed the removable rudder shoe? 1.6mm ss machine screws. This time I've left a gap (subtle) to allow for paint on top of the resin coat.

This is my idea for easy mounting and removal if repairs needed for the gallows. I have doubled the deck thickness at the locating holes too.  The 4mm UJ insert is just the ideal size and shape to turn without tools. I had one in my bits drawer so only had to order one more from SHG

Having fettled the Gunwales this morning it seemed only right to make the bow railings. Rather than use the feeble supplied stanchions I've gone my own route with 1.7mm brass rod.

The pulley blocks I believe give some modellers a headache but simply making cuts half way through enables the required shape. The wood is very absorbent to CA so take advantage, when set it is so much stronger then finish with abrasives

Thank you both for the votes  :-)

I'm struggling for paint just now  :((  Halfords next Wednesday to complete my click and collect.

However I must give a shout out and recommendation for Time Tunnel Models. Very definitely keenest price on Tamiya sprays but the bonus is FREE delivery on over £30. Royal Mail will not carry paint and most outlets want anything up to £6.45 for courier delivery.

Believe me when I say £30 is very quickly gobbled up by Tamiya  {-) {-) {-)

I've not yet imagined a colour scheme but the roof will definitely be white  O0  and work down from there.

I have however chosen a name! easy really considering Lobster boat is my eldest daughter Shelley Ann

Boulogne will be Rebecca Alice my youngest.

EDIT When I build MaggieM she will be Yorkshire Freckles after my wife  O0

Thank you Ian. There is actually no stanchion at all there on the plan but it seemed ridiculous to not support the rail with such an extension. However I confess I have made the rail extend further because I feel it looks more appropriate. This model in the Billings range really lends itself to upgrades and very enjoyable for a modestly priced kit at Cornwall MB

Slowly running out of details to finish so painting will be the order of proceedings very soon.

I think Tamiya racing green is going to be the main colour featured.

Made a start today after two paint deliveries.
It's only when primed that any flaws show up but its not bad. I will fettle it before a final coat.
Then I will mask off the red and prime the rest in white. Then mask off the waterline to paint the upper hull racing green.
The whole hull will then be overcoated in satin lacquer.

Opinions please

Wheelhouse Green top half or bottom half? I am thinking top half. Bulwarks will also be white

I notice you mask and spray bottom half of hull first rather than the whole lot.  Why, I may ask please if you don't mind?
Title: Re: Billing Boulogne Etaples
Post by: Taranis on June 02, 2020, 10:55:42 pm
Good question
My answer would be that it depends on the colours involved and I want to minimise the number of coats and masking.
Firstly by not priming the whole hull I have preserved my waterline.
I will mask off the red next and spray the rest white primer then mask the white for the waterline and spray the green.
Finally lacquer over all three saving using top coats on the primers.

Boulogne does not have a parallel water line but is quite unusual

Post by: RST on June 02, 2020, 11:22:57 pm
Fair enough! I find waterline more challenging, do it once. Get everything sorted below, then mark up and mask-off once.  Each to their own I guess! Looks like you do your cutting back on the hull before paint rather than after, or with a primer "guide coat".

Looks like you had a "good" batch of cap Maquette's liferaft cannisters. I ordered 2 for my last build.  One was like yours, the other came with more crude stickers and red tape that fell off after about 5 seconds, wasn't even same colour.  I do like Cap Maquette's fittings though!

Yes because it is glassed, the shape has to be near perfect prior to resin.

easy

She's sweet for tomorrow now. Top half is already fine. I've only had to fettle around the fairing I did to the prop tube

...yes, but it's very impressive to do that without some form of colour on the hull.  That's a very superior modelling skill you have mastered!!!!!  You should turn your hand to car restorations if you ever find yourself needing a bit of cash!!!

So called Flaming June has again curtailed any painting. When I was growing up I always thought the term referred to a period of hot weather but as long as I can remember it has always been flaming raining  {-)  and currently relatively cold too cold for spray paint

In old money there is a 20 degree drop in temperature from Tuesday and the humidity is very high not ideal for painting.

Yes that's quite dramatic Stan.

I got a break, the sky cleared and it warmed up a little enough to get some coats done.

In a change of plan I feathered the edge of the anti fouling coat and got it twice lacquered. When hardened this will be masked off to do the white above etc.

I've covered the boat testing tub so I can paint under cover  {-)

I've been having a bit of trouble with white but today I discovered that Tamiya TS-101 base white has a significantly better covering power. it is designed for applying over dark colours.
Here the wheelhouse is now ready for the lower half finishing in racing green. The separate interference fit glazing frames will be dark grey.

I will leave these screws loose for a few days as from experience the pressure would cause a bond between the lacquered parts.

What went on there, had a reply and hit "preview" then everything deleted!

You need some more detail around that net drum in my opinion.  They always have some floats / weights / spacers and plenty of ropes wound on the outer layer.  You could look to use the chord supplied with vertical blinds (it's plastic beads every half inch on a string)...

...I've not made the links live as pics this time as the forum didn't like it before!

....etc.  Knowing you, you can look at a piture of a net config of 'tinternet and make up some wires, punched leather, some floats and weights etc to wrap round the outside to make it look a bit less "sterile".

I spent all morning filling and sanding all the nooks and crannies until I'm satisfied she's ready for a final prime of white.
The bulwarks will remain white with a small margin "John Boyd" style and the deck will be the lighter grey as per the removable deck section.
Not sure what colour for the gunwale yet.

Your model, your rules  :-))

The wheel house looks fab in green. I reckon the hull will do so as well.

Yesterday I finished filling sanding and final priming.
I need a warm day now for Halfords satin lacquer overcoat. The white Tamiya primer will serve as finish colour when lacquered.
The sweeping curvaceous white line will be masked along its top edge to spray the green finish.

I managed to get some lacquer on after all today. First I took the edge off the white with 1500 grit.
Tomorrow I will mask off the fancy waterline to apply the green.(https://photos.smugmug.com/Billing-Boulogne-Etaples/i-fSKnVgR/0/420febf6/XL/72D34F95-712A-450B-9381-34E3ADCB841B-XL.jpg)

I was never sure about the colour of the gunwale but I think it will remain white to maintain the white/green connection and masking wise a whole load easier.
Billing instructions indicate grey for the whole transom bar the water line but on advice this will be green too. The slope however will be another colour but not sure what yet? perhaps white too or bare metal silver. EDIT or the dark grey of the gallows.

Masking for the green. First the upper edge of the white curve is created by eye and judgement.

I thought I might update you on the MRW sound module. It very clearly was designed for use with small models driven by brushed motor.
The output volume is non adjustable and it simply cannot compete with the inherent noise generated by brushless motors and ESC
So I can only class it as a FAIL in my build.

I might add that the Action Electronics unit is a similar price and far more potentially useable with volume adjustment and more cylinder options.

Potentially far more bang for buck

Hi Andy,

I did try and warn you about the MRW sound board when you said you bought one (not to expect more than it is).  I still defend it for what it is about the size of 2 postage stamps!  Still good for small models and "pug and play" but I can't tell much difference in sound between the program options.  I found speakers make the most difference, as does experimenting with tubes / boxes to get some base but thats the same with any sound board I've seen for boats.  I'd still defend the MRW board for what it is and the size it is.  I have MRW and the equivalent you listed from component shop and found very little difference in volume on the same speaker by the way.  But then I'm biased and still have one JJC sound board left -and I've never heard anything come even close to that ever since but they're long gone now!

Coming along nicely otherwise though!

(model shop leeds are delivering to me with RM within about 18hrs from placing order at moment -I think they developed an anti-matter / time-warp drive, maybe free energy as this is absolutely unheard of before ock-down!!!!)

Weather is total pants so its either rain or no paint holding me up.

Finished the green, a little bleed onto the white in places but easy to sand off before total lacquering.
Just have the deck to mask up now.

Re paint bleed, I have learnt from several places (and done it myself  :} ) that if after masking, you spray more of the original colour over the area, then potential bleed occurs in that colour and not the new colour you are spraying.

So, after spraying the white, apply your masking, spray some more white and once dry, add the green. Clean up is minimised to the usual raised line of colour caused by some spraying.

The colour scheme evolved to be as it is now but no one has commented neither here nor on Facebook as to whether it is appropriate but I take consolation from it being from my own minds eye and having not one negative remark. Silence is often golden  :-)
Really the most interesting part of a build is making it your own, Billings with this model just created an example but it is impossible to find a boat that this kit is modelled on

The gunwale ended up white purely because it was the least labour intensive but my fisherman friend said it's fine. Had he said otherwise I would have changed it  %%

It looks fine!  More intrigued about the winch and presumably the towing lines wrap round the net drum?

I looked these boats up last week out of curiosity and I could find more scallop boats matching the general look than trawlers. It's still an attractive french inshore boat anyway.
Title: Re: Billing Boulogne Etaples
Post by: Taranis on June 13, 2020, 11:26:00 pm
Thanks Rich I've tried to be unique just like the lobster boat. Rigging isn't complete yet but yes the winches let out the net and the trawl boards simultaneously.

EDIT
Presumably the large diameter of the net drum will mean that more net will be deployed faster than the trawl boards which should end up in the water almost last to open the mouth of the net.

Hi, when you look at the pic of a net I posted, the net goes out first then the trawl boards are on the outer edge of the net. They're there to keep the net open as it moves forwards. So yes, trawl boards would be last out first in I guess.  Nets wouldn't be hauled in full presumably. "Cod end" emptied progressively but I'm no expert.  That needs a separate winch.  I think billings maybe did some simplification but no matter, it looks a nice model

There is a pic on tinterweb of a boat with striking resemblance (at a distance) out in the English channel during the scallop wars a few years back.  It might even have been green!
Title: Re: Billing Boulogne Etaples
Post by: Taranis on June 14, 2020, 02:20:18 pm
I think they also use the trawl boards to pull the net off the drum thus only needing brake release on the winches. The net will end up behind the boards just by the boat moving forwards and then the trawl boards will be at the front.

Managed to get the satin lacquer on.

This is how it works with ropes in place for changing batteries. This would only be for charging as the two batteries should provide way way over an hour running.
To switch the esc on would not require the cabin to be removed, just lift the hatch slightly at the from edge.

Mine did an hour and half on the water yesterday with a standard 385 brushed. It was windy, so I needed a little more power on than usually necessary simply for the rudder to overcome the weather cocking effect of the wind. When I recharged the (3300mAh) battery, there was at least another half hour's worth of charge left, so I reckon your two together should give you six hours on the water, probably more as your motor will be more efficient than mine. It's a pleasant boat to sail, but six hours….

Simple idea gleaned from Facebook. Many people apparently use cardboard boxes to store and transport their smaller models.
I spied my wifes empty box from her new PFAFF  O0
Turned out to be exactly the right size  :-)

Thank you Mark  :-)

A recap of the running gear.....

Brushless out runner motor 2830 920kv running on 7.2 volt Nimh
Hobbywing Quicrun 30amp ESC
Raboesch 35mm D type RH 3 blade propeller.
Raboesch waterproof propshaft 211mm M4
SG90 micro servo.

I would not change anything. Having run fully onto a sandbar the propeller was man enough to reverse back off.

Just needs a sound unit to mask the electronics resonance
