Title: Blackpool Model Show 2020 - 17th-18th October
Post by: Iain on June 04, 2020, 01:26:24 pm
17th-18th October 2020, Norbreck Castle Hotel, Blackpool.
Like so many others I have been sitting on the fence waiting to see what will happen & when people will be able to go out & about again, basically when it will even be possible to hold an event where lots of people come together. Although there is still no definitive answer to this question I have decided to be optimistic & press on with the organisation of the show, in the hope that come October it will not only be allowed, but also safe to come together for what will I believe is going to be the first national model show of the year (not counting the London Model Engineering show in January of course)
So, its time to ask all those who are interested to get in touch. We are accepting bookings from clubs and individuals who wish to exhibit at the show. Also we are taking reservations for hotel rooms. These can be cancelled at any time up to September, by which time we should know for sure whether the event can safely take place or not, you don't have to even pay for the rooms until that time either, so there is no risk in making a reservation now.
In anticipation of there still being some form of social distancing in place come October, we are intending to spread the show across a number of rooms in the hotel, as well as the main halls, that way there will be much more space between people. Hopefully we can come up with something that will work in a safe & enjoyable way.
As for ticket sales for those wishing to visit: I had originally intended to start selling these from April, however that was before things went crazy, so again it became sit on the fence time. The problem is that each ticket sold costs me 10% of its face value in commission charges, which are not refundable should the event not go ahead, in fact there is an additional charge for providing a refund, so I would be set to lose quite a bit should I sell tickets & then have to refund them, I'm sure you can understand why this made me reluctant to start selling. Once I have a greater level of confidence that we can definitely hold the show I will enable the web site for ticket sales.
Meanwhile, stay safe & hopefully see everyone in October

Fingers crossed this will go ahead. I very much enjoyed last years event. I made a hotel booking via the website last year which was fine but the wristband I was given was for a visitor rather than as an exhibitor which made it a bit awkward getting into the hall to finalise setting up before the show officially opened, can this be looked at please.

An impartial judge is needed for Best In Show.
I was approached but I have had to decline for medical + geographical reasons. Any volunteers/nominations should contact Iain Lewis at Component-Shop.
I wish everyone good luck with this excellent show.

Hi Iain - Well we have booked a room so we are coming  :-))   I'll bring my boats up but I'll just put them on someone else's or clubs display if they don't mind me nicking a bit of space for a couple of boats  :-)   I'm not a member of a club myself and thats the reason why.  It'll be nice to meet some of the people on here too.

We've booked a room through ebooker and saved £40.  No deposit and you can pay on arrival at the hotel.  Best thing is you can cancel the day before and incur no cost.  Might as well book a room just in case as it may get busy.

Good news and bad news Mark.  Put a boat on a stand, its in the comp.  If enough people like it and say so on the judging form that they will hopefully have given back to me before 10 on Sunday, you get a prize whether you want it or not.

Just had a look on ebookers.com & it gave a rate of £150 for a double room B&B Friday & Saturday nights. If you book directly with us it would be £134 as we have a block rate discount with the hotel. (single rooms £72 B&B total for the 2 nights) We don't profit from this, it is just cost price, but by getting a reasonable number of room bookings for the hotel it helps to keep the cost of hiring the halls down, which in turn helps to keep the ticket price down - we don't run the show to make a profit.

I have been in further discussions with the hotel this week & it looks like we will be OK to hold the show. I am in the process of updating the web site & contacting clubs & traders etc, but unfortunately half of our staff have been furloughed due to the need to shield themselves, which means double the workload for the rest of us & that doesn't leave much time for the show. Hopefully the guys will be returning to work from next week & that will give me a bit of spare time.
There will be some changes to the show from the way it was done in previous years, the intention is to space things out much more so that we can maintain some form of social distancing, so expect a bit more walking as parts of the show will be in different rooms. I know that may not be ideal, however in these strange times we have to adapt & make some compromises.
For room bookings at the hotel please contact me directly, preferably by e-mail to info@component-shop.co.uk these can be reserved & paid for later (September) please do not use the booking & ticket sales on the show web site, these are disabled at present & will only be turned on when I am 100% sure that the show will go ahead. Look what happened in Leicester! If similar happened to Blackpool I would be forced to cancel & where tickets have to be refunded I end up paying a commission not only for the original sale, but also for the refund.
I find it incredible that the Blackpool show in October will effectively be the first show of the year (not counting the London Model Engineering Show in January) so I am hopeful that it can be made a great show & worth the wait, I certainly have a few goodies planned :-)

I think you are making this into the best show we have on the circuit and hope all our fellow modellers are able to attend and enjoy it.

Fingers crossed it will be on.

It’s just a car park but usually empty at night
Overnight booking and payment instructions are on a sign.
It’s local council controlled not the boat club

OK Folks the show is definitely on!
After much discussion with the hotel & others, we believe that we can put the show on in a safe (& legal) way. It will look a bit different to previous years as we will be taking additional rooms at the hotel in order to give us the space to keep people apart (social distancing) you can also expect some extra barriers & possibly one-way systems in place, plus lots of sanitiser etc.
I have sent details out to all the clubs that i have e-mail addresses for, however some may not be current addresses, or could be unreliable when it comes to mass mailings (eg hotmail) so if you are interested in exhibiting, either as a club or individual, please get in touch as soon as you can. This may very well be the only show of 2020, but hopefully it will still be a good one.
Ticket sales will be going live on the show web site in the next day or two, if you want to book hotel rooms that will also be going live on the web site, or you can contact me directly.

Was going to ask the same question!

On a personal note, we have pretty much written off 2020 has having any shows at all.  To be honest, if Iain had decided to call off Blackpool this year I would have been the first to congratulate him.  The stress and cost to put on a 'normal' show there is almost a stress too much - to stage one under these present conditions is, maybe, a step too far - for anyone!

I would advocate cancelling this year - get the poop-show over and done with and reset the clock for next year.

Post by: Iain on September 09, 2020, 01:35:37 am
That latest bit of news is something of a concern & may very well scupper the plans - another phone call to the hotel in the morning.
I was sitting on the fence for the longest time waiting for some sort of clear guidance as to what we could do with the show. Recent discussions have shown a way that the show could still go ahead, so I made the decision to go for it. The volume of questions we are getting every day from people wanting to come to the show certainly suggested that there was a significant desire for the show to go ahead. Additionally the traffic on the web site & facebook being already much higher than it has ever been before.
In any case I know that I am in a no win situation. If I put the show on there will be some who say that I shouldn't, whereas if I don't try to do it there will be plenty that say I should have.
Lets see what the powers that be have to say tomorrow & I will add an update once I have some news.

Due to Covid causing lot of things to change all over the country.
I am finding to do a lot of things you need to pre book and buy tickets online etc so the orginser can control numbers better. The old  deciding on the day and buying tickets on the door seams to not be happing much at the moment , which I can under stand .
With the Blackpool show will people be able to buy tickets on the door ? If so are you limiting the amount of people inside the show ?

Will the new law 14th September on social gatherings cause the show to be cancelled?
Only 6 people allowed Ina gathering, larger groups will be banned.

Title: Re: Blackpool Model Show 2020 - 17th-18th October
Post by: Iain on September 09, 2020, 11:06:53 am
There is considerable ambiguity in the new law on social gatherings as it currently stands, which in theory is to be cleared up later today. It has been stated that there will be a number of exceptions & it believed (hoped?) that events such as the Blackpool Model Show would fall into a category of "hospitality" which would be exempt from the ruling.

I have spoken again with the hotel this morning & they are anxiously awaiting this clarification. If it really does end up that 6 or more people from different families cannot come together, then it would mean that the hotel would have to close again, as would pubs & restaurants, something which the government, in theory, doesn't want.
We just have to wait for further clarification.

What is very clear is that the government is controlling numbers and is not able to be interested in us as individuals. Even if legal that does not make it sensible.

The questions that I would ask is how are they going to guarantee sensible social distancing within the exhibition and any in any queue to get tickets + hygeine / sanitiser / cleaning.

Sorry folks, the show is now CANCELLED!

This is not because of the change in rules recently announced by the government, or because of any issue with the hotel, simply because so much support evaporated yesterday after the announcement that it became nonviable to have the show, simply, a whole bunch of people contacted me to say that they would not now be exhibiting.
The new rules do not mean that the show could not take place, as events like this are outside of their scope. The hotel have been incredibly supportive & had gone to extreme levels to make it possible to hold the show, but without enough exhibitors it just wouldn't work.
I'm really grateful to those who were still happy to support the show & I am truly sorry to disappoint you, but hopefully you understand why i had to cancel, honestly this was the last thing I wanted to do, I had really hoped we could have pulled it off & had a good weekend.
I asked the hotel if there were any free weekends in early spring time to see if a postponement would be possible, but alas, their next free weekend isn't until the end of May.
So, until October 2021, it looks like that is it for the Blackpool Model Show....

Given the On/off situation last year I would imagine that they will be waiting to see how the situations progresses over the next few months ( Although I suspect things may happen in the background) and gauge interest in how many might actually go, I for one will not likely be going to any major events this year.

No large gatherings for us until 2022 I find it hard to believe how quickly people are ready to dive in so soon.
We look forwards to days away and away from crowds
Doncaster will be my next show.

There are so many "ifs" still relevant.
If no new variants emerge that reduce vaccine effectiveness.
If there isn't a winter upsurge from October.
If the vaccines keep virtually everyone out of hospital.
If the vaccine uptake in younger age groups is high enough to put a lid on infections.
If we are all sensible when restrictions are lifted and the R" and "K" rates don't spike.
If the lockdowns haven't changed people's behaviour to the extent that they won't go to large indoor events.
If traders still exist and are wiling to commit.

It is, I think, too early to know enough answers to make public announcements.

I do feel great sympathy for the organisers who must put in a lot of work that cannot be left until later and might, again, see it all wasted. Do they have the courage, and financial backing, to keep trying?

...Hi Guys...

Is there any information on The Blackpool Model Show for this year 2021...

We would like to book our accomadation for the show...

...Best Regards...Norry Mason...
Most early booking systems have an option where you insure your booking to get a full refund should you need to cancel up to the last day or so  Last time I did it, about an extra £2 on a £100 deal.

I've got to agree with Tug Fanatics list of ifs , though.  Looking around from the relative safety of the inside of my car when I am exercising it to move the oil around, if it is a nice day, there seem to be huge crowds wandering the lake park.  Last summer they seemed to largely consist of people from high rate areas who were indulging in family gatherings in a low rate area.  The 5th and 6th ifs are probably crucial, and the Great British public has never been noted for mass sensibility.

I’m glad I’m not the only one.
No large gatherings for us until 2022 I find it hard to believe how quickly people are ready to dive in so soon.
We look forwards to days away and away from crowds

I'm of the same mindset as you Andy, this last year has flown by so waiting another year isn't going to hurt. (might even finish a model by then)  %)

Sadly these are very difficult times for not only us model boaters but for the exhibitions that were, and may not be for another year.It looks unlikely that I will be able to get back to the UK at present for either regatta's (oh they are not happening) or model shows.....all still up in the air. A pity as I miss my modelling  friends, but as we are all aware, safety first. Another year in the big scheme of things is nothing compared to our safety, sad times I know, and may I quote Larry (the long build) I would probably not attend any shows this year as (how can I put it !) I am of an age  {:-{  and over here our vaccine is .....well.......who knows....not coming our way.
Keep safe, and maybe have a thought about shows (sorry to my organiser friends...)

We all wish to get back sailing and supporting the model shows and club events. I personally think 2021 will be a white wash once again. The road map is full of if buts and maybes should any shows go ahead how many people will support them.

This thread really really needs to be unstickied now so that any further comment and information can be relevant to this years show, preferably on the thread for the 2021 show.

Right then this has come from the Horses Mouth Stav as he was one of the organisers who put on the Blackpool show.

NO trader who had booked in failed to show up absoloutly NO trader who showed interest even before booking did NOT show up.

Every single trader who attended were well received and ALL did a roaring trade and not a single complaint off any one of them.

ALL the clubs who said they were going to attend were there.

We took a big financial risk putting the show on for the simple reason of you simply can not run a show with promises of the public attending as many who said they were comming did not.

The actual feedback Iain and Stav had during the show and afterwards was overwhelming to say the least.

As for running the show for Profit You can believe this or Not up to you this is why we try and keep the admission proce down so low, the Show is NOT RUN for profit and any surplus is simply plowed back into the show Furniture.....New carpets New wood for the barriers etc etc etc.

Just to give you an idea to the costs involved our total outlay before the show was in excess of 10K.

Unfortuantly this year we did in fact make a loss and luckily for us we had a surplus so we can in fact bear the loss.

Sat attendance was pleasing to say the least, Sunday was a typical show Sunday down on sat but hey ho onwards and upwards.

As for Next year YES the SHOW WILL GO AHEAD 100%......DATES TO BE FNALISED WITH THE HOTEL

I do sincerely hope this posting quells any rumours going around about None trader attendance and if truth be known we were only 2 traders down on previous years and this was puerly down to Ill Health and retirement
