Title: 1/96 Sandown Class on the way
Post by: midori gaoka on June 14, 2020, 01:04:57 pm

Hello,
Now, my model "commandant l'Herminier" is completed. And why not to start a new model but from a foreign navy: the Royal Navy.
The other challenge is "how to move her ?" 2 voith schneider systems at 1/96 will be very interesting to build.
At first, I've received a jecobin plan. It was the first time I get a plan with so much details.
On the second photo, you should be able to see where voith will be.

thank you for your comments.
As you can see all the main bridge is removable.Full access to the voith schneiders is required.
I wanted to operate bow thrusters but it would have been too heavy.

Hello,
As you can see in the last post. Voith schneider mechanism are already. I did not made it by my self but my brother did it. He is better than me in mechanic system.
So, on the photo, you will be able to see each part take place in each voith

You can get some small, light bow thrusters on Shapeways. I use the 6mm version of the following on a 1/200th scale Smit London without any problems.

Thank your advice.
The front is on the way with a break water and some lockers above. In few days , I would like to paint the hull and the main bridge.
I 'm looking for the exact paint reference of the royal navy. But I did not find it . It's easier to find a good acrilyc paint when you have a R.A.L reference.
I had so much trouble with enamel ou humbrol paint. Soif some one give me  a RAL reference, it coulb be a great help .

It’s a BSI number you want for the grey. Called light weather work grey can’t recall exact number but think BS 381C 676 is about right

As per my last comments Midori. A super looking piece of modelmaking. You could put that on a base and it would look great as a stand alone model.

For decks I have used either bSI381C 637 medium sea grey or BSI381C 638 dark sea grey
for anti fouling i have always used red car primer.

Having  had to spend 3 hours a day for 40 days in a much larger chamber I can confirm that it was all white for hygiene reasons and that it is much easier for the operators to see if there is any foreign object inside or around.  The 'crew' were very particular that nothing that could cause a spark was taken into the chamber.

Hi, Just asking out of interest having a background in my career of commercial sat diving (though not a diver!).  I'm aware that commercial suppliers such as Divex supply to the military also, was that true for RN also?  Presumably the RN doesn't have divers kept under sat but you're right in as much as hygeine inside a living chamber as far as I experienced is paramount and one thing about divers is they tend to make sure the living quarters are clean.  Ear infections seemed to be one thing that could occur under sat.  As for what's allowed inside I couldn't comment -in civvy street with the guys in there 28 days you might be surprised.  I only went in to the chambers and the bell when they were surfaced and to be honest had a severe disiking each time.  I believe the previous field engineers to me got put into the full suits and kirby morgan hats and thrown in at the national hyperbaric centre to get the experience, but that wasn't taken furrher.  I have allot of respect for divers for what they do but not sure whether thay are crazy or just plain daft to do it!

I admire the little chamber posted!  I don't know what it's like on the Sandown and I presume is's a treatment chamber but I can recognise most of the useful parts from it.

I built a sandown class (HMS Penzance) some 10 years ago, but it was at 1/48 scale.

I think I may still have some detailed photos of the real ship if they are of any help?

Thank you T888,
I would like to know if badges on the funnel are similar on the both side. Does it mean anything such as a channel unity or scotish unity ?And where i can find the badge for each sandown mine hunter boat.
So, few photos about the yellow submarine which is the same in the french navy.

Thank you for your precisious help.
I think I will choose a boat among a MCM3 unit. the badge is the easiest to represent.
I will represent a boat at the beginning of the 2000's, it 's for that reason I've build a ROV not a seafox.
I've made some trials. It's all right but a little much noisy . It's coming from the gear mechanism. I try to find a light foam to reduce the noice.

Title: Re: 1/96 Sandown Class on the way
Post by: T888 on November 29, 2020, 07:28:58 pm
What I’ve done in the past is to copy the picture of the badge in to a WORD document , then scale it down to the size required and then print it off. Once I’m happy with the size it’s cut out coated with Tamyia Matt varnish. Once dry it then fixed to the funnel.

With my HMS Penzance the Vioth unit is belt drive and also wines. If you like I’ll post a couple of picture of her here, if that’s OK.

thank you for your advice T.888
I ve some photos (but not in integrality) about a blue cylinder which can be handlled with a crane. It's located near the dinghies.
But,I don't know what it is and any idea about size.
So, the pond trial are completed, let's go back to construction. As you can guess, I've added light for corridor.
I've also build the dinghies jerricans storage and jerricans in the same time. I think it is the same grey as superstructure

Dia 0.6m - 1m
Length 2.7m
Title: Re: 1/96 Sandown Class on the way
Post by: warspite on December 06, 2020, 11:31:25 am
I would assume closer to the 500 - 600 mm diameter as a 1m would be a diameter that would go from the waist to above his hard hat, whereas the diameter at 600 mm would be about the width of his waist, length maybe use the height of the crew to guess at under their height say maybe 1.8m or just at 2m, but as always I could be wrong.  ;D

Thank you T888,
As we said in french you are a "gold mine of knowledges". One of my project: to be able to laid down a dinghy on water.
So, on the first photo, you can see 2 servos. The first one is used to give the crane rotation. The second one is linked to a stripe and a cable. So the rotation bring  8 cm, it's enough to see the dinghy on the water

Hello,
Now, it is time to prepare stanchions. I've found some 0.3 mm brass tube on a chinese site. I wanted less smaller but it did not find it.
I used masking tape to stick tube during soldering. As you can see, there is 2 colours .The black one is for flexible part.

And my other question, how big is a link chain ? .On the second photo, I've started to detail an upper bridge. I varnisihed every woody parts in oder to protect them.

Thank you for for help T888.
I'm nearly close to to finish the mast. I've used a 0.02 mm elastic thread to represent shrouds. I'd like to represent my sandown class mine hunter in operation on french coast with another NATO boats. So, I would like to add the NATO and French courtesy pavilion in the mast. But which size? Is there any particular label (with balls and triangle) when they hunt mine ? And in a same time, I would like to order the white british royal navy flag for the back of the boat, but which size ?

Use BECC flag size calculator http://www.becc.co.uk/contents/en-uk/d50.html (http://www.becc.co.uk/contents/en-uk/d50.html) you then order the correct flag from Cornwall models.

Looking really sharp & clear, and whilst it's of no consequence now, you appear to be getting bleed thru of the navigation light [possibility light colour plastic?] to areas 22.5 degrees more than aft of the lights axis....which is a no-no

For the future, you may want to check the Rules, but is a bulkhead wall mounted downward facing flood light [facing @ 90 degrees to FWD] allowed to be illunimated if so close to a navigation light?

2 channels for each  inclinations of blades, one for forward speed (backward would destroyed blade inclination mechanism), one for smoke generator, one for crane rotation and one for the rise of the cable.

Hello,
On the first photo, you can see big gear are linked to a servo. So, when the servo move, big gear move and so the small one as well. The small one is connected to blades. Arrows on small gear help me to see how blades will react. With many trials, I've found how remote control will operate on blades.

So ,
Sometimes, as the real one ,a model need  few trials to be operational.
Let's go for the second one. The main goal was to check maneuvrability. So, she sails very well but it take times to understand how voith work both together.
I will have to check if she sails longer without lights on. Because, for this trial , the HMS Blyth sailed just 20 min. She works with a liPo 2S 7.4 v and 2500 mAh.
But, I need  a voltage reducer for 6v LEDS and 3v for radar

Hello,
This new trial was made to check if crane work properly. I had to change the crane  rotation servo because each time I switched on the receiver, the rotation was different. In same time, I 've checked the smoke generator. So, the model is nearly finished and I wonder if a british model boat magazine should be interested by an article about this kind of model.
