Title: Stripping!!!!
Post by: i.prudhoe on October 06, 2007, 11:59:37 pm
Hi, I've just bought a Fairey Spearfish off ebay, which looked fantastic on the picture, but close up it looked like it had been painted with a catapult from 50yds!! It has a GRP hull and superstructure, and all of its beautiful fittings are painted over too. Its awful. I want to strip it back to bare bones. Can anyone advise me what i can use on grp please to remove what looks like household gloss. I was told a man called Stavros was an  expert here.

Cheers   Ian   :)

I believe a product called "Model Stripper" (or something like it) is still available. I used it to strip the paint off a "Pocher" Rolls-Royce. An excellent product. BY.

Hi yes me can help as allways, right upon pain of death do you use NITROMOS as it WILL attack the grp but if you have a yacht chandeliers around you or even try a decent car motor factors or builders merchant the re is a stripper available especially for grp and it will work a treat

hi there Ian

better late than never - if you have a dig through some of the 'old' topics there is one there which suggests using brake fluid as a stripping agent.  however, before going down this path, I would try and sort out the topic because as far as I can remember there are different types of brake fluid - one is no good at all, the other is one of the best pain strippers.   try a search, if you can, .

I just 'Googled' for "model stripper" just as the wife came in!  Can you eat the steak after it's been on your eye?

That is the product you need but BEWARE many members of this forum have had trouble with this company and it got so bad that Martin had to take them off the traders list, and if I am right, well I normally am some of our members have had to either threaten or even use TRADING standards to get the money back for goods they paid for but never received.Try a REPUTABLE supplier

If you need a reputable supplier for Modelstrip use Ontracks. Excellent service and reasonable prices. Family concern. I have used them on many occasions with no problems   O0

There is another product.

Difficult to get in the UK, but freely available in the US. It's called "Green Stuff" and is a thick green liquid.

Paint on, or leave small parts in a bucket/can/bowl of it, and it will come out brilliantly. Works just as well on arcrlyics as it does on enamels or other mechanisms. Totally GRP safe.

I brought a pallet of it and shipped it over for my model painting club, but still have about 1/2 a pallet left if anyone wants some?

Not sure what to say really.

It's a bit thinner than washing up liquid, you pour some into a container, put what ever item you want into it, leave it for a while, take it out, run it under the tap and give it a bit of a brush with an old toothbrush and what ever it is comes out just as new.

I paint wee little minatures, or Toy Soldiers perhaps more accurately. Probably put 30-40 hours worth of wok into a single 28mm figure, so you can make a guess at the quality. When it gets messed up, I just bung them into the Green Stuff bowl and start again. Bit sore on the pride, but at least it looks good in the end.

Because I am some what of a skin flint, I keep re-using the stuff, so it lasts for ages. To completely clean up a 28mm minature, with 4-5 layers of paint, 3 layers of ink, a few filters and then spray varnish on it, it takes about 15 minutes + a wash under the tap, the paint just falls away.

I've not got the links and some pictures I took as they are sitting on one of my servers, and the servers are currently in a heap in the garage as yet not connected.

wait... let me have a dig about for a useful link....

EEK!!!

I am most stupid, and I apologize immensely. The stuff is called   SIMPLE GREEN , not Green Stuff. That's what you get for confusing paint stripper with  epoxy modelling putty, which, if we're honest, is something we've all done a few times right?

A google search reveals that they now have a Co.Uk website. Price for a big bottle of the concentrated stuff when I brought it worked out at about £10, which isn't cheap, but having used it a number of times I think it's worth it.

I can't find the specific bottle that I ordered, but I am told buy a fellow painter that this stuff:

http://www.simplegreen.co.uk/produkte_12.php.htm

is even better.

If in doubt, this is the dilute version of what I purchased from the US:

http://www.simplegreen.co.uk/haushalt_01.php.htm

Be a wee bit careful of it though. I accidentally let some drip onto a painted table leg, didn't see it for 1/2 hour and then went to wipe it, revealing bare wood.

Not at all sure what's in it. It doesn't seem to be Acidic or basic though, as you can touch it with no ill effects.
