Title: Bestshipmodel.com OK?
Post by: Sojourner on June 26, 2020, 07:35:15 am
Not sure if this is the right place, but I have a query.
Has anyone had any ship plans from  https://new.bestshipmodels.com/  ? (corrected - Admin )
I ordered some a week or 2 ago, the download worked OK, but I can't print them as my PC keeps telling me to install an app. Being short on IT skills, I'm in the dark here - any info?

I've emailed bestshipmodels (US address, price of plans in $) several times but my messages returned, not delivered.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I am assuming that you have no PC knowledge and that you are using a Windows computer.

left click on a blank space on the screen and then hover your cursor over the file that you have downloaded. A box should make itself visible and the first line is "Item type *******".
Please tell us what the  "*******" say. eg Item Type: Microsoft Edge PDF Document.

Now right click over the file and left click on "open with..."  This brings up a box with various program options. Please tell us what options it has offered you.

Can't view the plans - downloaded them, then when I click "open file", a message appears: "This file does not have an app   associated with it to perform this action. Please install an app, or if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Setting Page" - where ever that is??
Can't see any default apps page on my screen, but I only have basic IT skills.

Have Windows PC. Nothing happens when I hover over file.
When I click "Downloads", a list appears (all my other downloads work OK, for example Scalescenes plans etc) When I double click on bestshipmodels, list appears: Internet Explorer,Notepad,Website etc - nothing happens whichever one I choose, just the message about installing the app.

What is the file extension? A quick look online suggests that it might be a RAR file which is a compressed format similar to ZIP files in which case you will need to download a RAR decompressing utulity program to extract the files.

I also saw a reference to BestShipModels being a 'pirate site' which suggests that they may not have the copyright of the plans they are selling.

Hi, mind if I butt in?

Can you Single Right Mouse Click on the plans
A pop up menu appears
At the bottom of the menu it should say Properties
Put the cursor on the word and a Single Left Mouse Click
A different pop up appears
Look just down from the top for Type of File
On that Menu at the Top Right is an X
Give that a Single Left Mouse Click
Then post on here what the type of File it is.

Did you left click on an empty space on the screen first as in my previous instructions?

I think that we are both trying to get the same information.

Sorry , no I didn't mean for you to back out. We might get the information your way more easily than mine. Anything that works!

Well, I got to "Properties", clicked that, and for type of file, it just says "file". Also at the bottom of the box a warning that this might come from another computer posing a danger. From what's been said about it being a possible pirate site, and the fact that my emails are returned undelivered, I think I'll have to write off the £8-37 ($9.99), and put it down to experience.
Many thanks, anyway for all your help and time.
Cheers, Howard

I think that is probably the safest thing to do.  :-))

You're right - I paid via Paypal, so even if I don't get any comebacks, I'll notify them, and may serve as a warning to others.
Thanks again for all the expert assistance.
( The plans were for 16C Spanish galleon "Santiago de Compostela" - a city which has a special resonance for me, so it's disappointing. I have printed a couple of small pics from the web, so maybe have enough info to at least make a small model in a bottle)

I suppose you could always get the kit from Cornwall Model Boats for about £130.00 which seems good value? As per the post from Jaymac. It's got pretty good reviews.

This does sound odd.

One thing that I would definitely not do is click on a link from their website to download software.

Having said all that if I was going to run a scam plans for wooden model galleons is not where I would start.

Paypal might give you a refund.

No problems there Tug but it is interesting getting to the bottom of the story.

Yes, saw this,it was the first I'd heard of the ship, or the model.
Seriously considering the kit, though it's rather large (my home is small, and already choc-a-bloc with models), and I really wanted to scratch build in about 1/192 scale.
However, watch this space.
Anyway, thanks, guys , for the help and interest,

Not Really, if you paid by PP then I think you can get the money back.

I wonder where they get their plans from? If the online comment that it ia a pirate site is correct they could possibly just be selling copies of drawings from various sources and if these are kits then there is unlikely to be sufficient information to scratch build. i.e. no lines plan etc.

Obviously I am speculating here.

Will try Paypal, I do quite a lot of stuff with them, so nothing ventured....
The Disar kit is a big temptation - just have to slip it past her ladyship - essential lockdown activity.
The stash increases exponentially....

Just as a matter of interest, plans for Santiago de Compostela come up on another Hungarian site shipmodell.com and are foc. They are a RAR file and I found I had 7Zip on my Windows 10 setup. I also did a scan just in case and it seems to be OK but that's no warranty. There's loads of other stuff on the site but of various qualities and sources!

Seems to confirm it is just another rip off operation then.

This is the reason why plans supplied with kits are not comprehensive or always to scale and require the actual kit pieces to complete the model. There is always somebody trying to make a quick buck from other people's work.

That's interesting. I was going to mention that site also. I downloaded some things from it before but could never open what I'd downloaded after. I couldn't remember whether it was check or polish but both wrong!

.rar used to be a way of renaming a .zip file to get it through virus checkers at work. You just used to rename it back to .zip but it doesn't seem to work like that more recently. Someone maybe got wise to it and changed the .zip programing?

Yup, there are 4 sheets that actually correspond but its a big jump from the frame page to the next ones which are detail, so you'd have to have a fair idea of Spanish builders of umpteen years ago!The only things I'd add for Sojourners marital peace are 1.Fully rigged ships are always bigger than the space allocated and 2. You've got to dust the bloody things and the smaller they are, the more you break!
Has anyone got the bulk index that used to come with Model Shipwright? I wonder if there was a build in there?

.rar is a different file compression system to .zip. Commonly used for very large files as it splits the compressed file into sections, even if one section is lost it can recover the full file so if often used for video or music files. A good decompression program for .rar is WINRar. Once run this will sit in the background and all you need to do is right click on the file and there are options to decompress in the menu.

hi Jim, I can only comment based on what we used to do. Actually it wasn't our company but often the person sending the files where .zip used to be blocked by IT. So we renamed to .zip once we had them and it all came back to normal. I don't doubt it wasn't technically right.  But sometimes you had to get round daft IT policies!  It's not the stupidest IT thing I've seen by a long way!!!  It was worth a shot mentioning. Just in case, but might explain why it's not worked more recently.  I must admit having done that for years I didn't even know .rar was a legitimate file extension so thanks for that info!
