What no video ? ;)

I enjoyed myself - despite the boating.
My pairs partner (new member here - Bill D203) did the driving - thanks again Bill.
As we arrived in Bristol, I got that horrible sinking feeling that I'd left something important behind - in this case my starter box - containing starters, starting and glow batteries, glow-clip and fuel pump :embarrassed: :embarrassed:
Thanks to a couple of kind fellow racers, we (I) managed to get going though - most grateful.
I went first, and probably managed 30+ uninterrupted laps before cutting out when throttling - found a crisp bag and blamed it on that. Bill had a similar spell before developing radio problems, and that pretty much describes the rest of the race for us. From then on, I couldn't manage more than a few laps without cutting out when throttling back. Bill had another couple of short spells before his radio packed in completely. Later (and safely back home), I discovered a water leak at the water jacket o-ring on my CMB45. Also, compression loss caused by burnt-out head shims. Pretty sure the water leak caused the cutting out problem (water into the carb).

sorry to hear about your problems ,as for forgetting starting gear etc i think thats another reason to go gas instead of nitro ;D all you need to remember then is yer radio and yer boat and a full tank of fuel will last you a good hr or so O0.mind you that depends how big the tank is hehe ;D.

It was all good clean fun. More importantly (as far as I'm concerned anyway), most if not all who were there treated it as fun. Some impressive boats on display (Kurt's new one, Nigel's rocket boat), as well as some good results from some much less extravagant boats.
I didn't think you could resist those "pro-gas" comments ;) but even a gas boat needs fuelling up in the first place......
I was quite grateful when I found the knackered head shims - I thought I needed a new piston and liner.
Our own Simon did pretty well with his pairs partner Andy. They probably would have been in the top few, but for some problems of their own.
-
Haha sounds like you all had a good time and thats what its all about,i was just messing with yaa O0.

What no video ? ;)
im not sure if any videos where taken on the day,im sure there will be,
-
hi i have plenty of photos if thats any good?
-
kurt , good to see you and the others what a good day , both the racing and the weather were spot on had a few small problems with my boat but we as a pair got 120 + laps . your apache was running great and sounding bang on tune !!!!! see you in 5 weeks

Glad to hear you all enjoyed racing in a 'friendly' way. It's a bit different from the usual stuff but good practice for endurance and reliability.
Also glad to hear they all rallied round for Ian (I've NEVER done anything like that - he lied unconvincingly) - I would expect nothing less from OMRA guys. It's a sort of 'pride' code - if you can't win fairly, there's no point in winning at all!
Congrats on the 4th place Tony - no mean feat!
Some photos would be nice.
Dont forget there's another race at Kingsbury on 11th Nov (frostbite job??) so get your entries to Robin early on 0121 243 1532.
There's only Penzance and Kingsbury before the winter hibernation! (and the dreaded AGM) :o :o :o

hi i came in fourth danny mate. although i think there was a joint 4th so im not to sure :D
-
Ah - so you're not 'Tony' then? Oh well, it was worth a guess.
Well done anyway "Toy"
Danny
Ps If you put your first name in your profile, I'd know what to call you (on a less formal basis than 'Toy Boater') O0
-
Hi All,
I think we came in as the other joint 4th.
Slight problem with my team mate and his interpretation of the rules. Spent to much time at the dark side, circuit racing.
Thought you had to wait for the dead boat to be returned before putting his on the water, doh! Lost about 7 laps!
Still he has been kicking himself and he owes me a trophy! Have notr come home empty handed so far!
See you at Penzance!
Simon

Thought you might change your mind!
Don't worry about the points, with the way things have been going lately. It may well look the part but thats about it. Broke a servo at Bristol as well
Don't know what it is about these radio boxes but mine is wet too. Bought a proper water proof one this time and it leaks!
This is the last chance for it, if not i will build my own as part of the boat.
Regards
Simon
-
hi i can mould any size radio box in any colour in fibre glass if u let me know what size i can sort 1 out for you
-
hi danny i have a name now ;D
Thats your 3rd name in 2 days ;D.
-
yeah the devil was to offensive and toy boater was a bit lame so i put my proper name
-
Well better the devil you know Ben {-).
-
Hi Ben
Thanks to our cheeky mate Dicky :P I've just found out you can't add your name to your profile so I've tried sticking mine in as 'custom title' - see what it looks like ???
Simon
After all the tips I gave!! Hope you didn't miss third place by those 7 laps :o
Well done anyway.
Radio boxes are born to leak - they'd get water in them in the middle of a desert, in summer, on the hottest day!
Balloon the rec and batts, stuff the rest with kitchen roll, silicon the lid down, then watch the bl**dy stuff find a way in ::) ::)

Hmm, you are not wrong about the wet stuff and radio boxes. Last outing was a 35 quid servo down the pan. But, the box has since passed the half hour at the bottom of the bath test so we shall see what happens next time out.
Failing that, I'm going to build an FSRV style compartment into the boat, and put the radio box into it!!

why worry about radio boxes leaking? just get some corrosion x or similar stuff they use on bike electrics its 100% water proof and will protect all your electrics with a cpl of squirts to the innards of your servos and rx battery connectors plugs switches whatever?.it even works in salt water ;) dont believe me try it O0.

On behalf of Bernard,a very sincere thank you to everyone who went to the Bristol Pairs and raced and thank you for an excellent days racing. Hope to see you all again next year.

Call me old fashioned, and cynical if you liek, the wife does, but I still (from experience) believe the best protection for the electrics to be to keep them dry, my last 35 quid servo bought it big style with only a smidge (1/8") of water in the radio box. When we removed the top of the radio box, there was actually white smoke coming from the circuit board of the servo.
I am thankful really that my 40 quid receiver and 2.6 amp battery survived to tell the tale.
Ironically the 3 quid throttle servo is fine.
This was in fresh (ish) water. No salt.
And the electrics had been sprayed with corrosion X.
Guess it got washed away. Never mind.

I ve had my electrics dunked on a sailboat in salt and they still work O0 maybe i was lucky ::) doubt it though im not usually ;).mind you i still use a radio box no harm in double insurance {-).
-
I'm also in favour of keeping water out as far as humanly possible (from the radio that is). I'm sure sprays like these will help to deal with whatever water still gets in, but you have to consider the places water will go (everywhere !), that the spray won't. Whilst you can probably deal fairly effectively with the underside of a P.C.B, you have to consider the component side as well, the spaces under low fitting components, the fact that the portion of the component lead facing the underside probably won't get sprayed etc. Some components (eg IF transformers), have screening cans, so water can get inside. In the case of servos, you also have electromechanical components to consider. It only takes a single drop of water to stop a receiver or a servo (or a failsafe) from working - depending where it goes. Again depending where it goes, it may be temporary, or permanent.
I, personally, favour using a separate failsafe (preferably fully sealed, and preferably directly fed through a 'Y' cable from the battery/switch harness), over a Rx with built in failsafe functionality (if it gets wet, the failsafe functionality will quite likely disappear with the receiver functionality).
Just my thoughts, opinions, and preferences...

Also glad to hear they all rallied round for Ian
Danny,
Even through the embarassment etc; having been to a few meetings, I didn't have much doubt that I would get help - once the laughter had died out. There's definitely no shortage of good eggs. I'd never want to take it for granted though.
-
The trick is to strip the rx down and spray it all down inside ,totally soak it over a container ,any run off can be used to dip the innards of your servos rx plugs switches etc, then you let them dry out.so basically your dipping your electronics into the liquid rather than just spraying them.some of these sprays are used on electrics in ships boats etc and on boats that have been sunk for days and refloated the electrics were found to still be working so it must be good stuff if done right.thats asuming you believe the storys,as for failsafes i use a fully water proof one O0 cost me 8 quid from mtronik
s ;D.
