Title: Cowl Vents.

Just wondering how you guys go about making cowl vents.   The biggest I need to make is around two and a half inches or 63.5 mm.

Is that the height or the diameter of the cowl opening and what would the tube diameter be? nemesis

I made a pair for my Springer from PVC pipe elbows.   O0

Your picture looks just fine, fills my screen & the limit keeps the cost down. No problem to me.

Ones I made for the lifeboat. The bell was plunge moulded styrene in two halves, mated to a piece of plastruct pipe for the tube. 1/12 scale, about 2” high.

Why bother making them, there are plenty out there at decent cost. Macs Mouldings & MMB are very reasonable.

They large ones r 63.5 mm tall.  Yes I had thought of using plastic bends and or pipe but I threw out all my surplus diy hoardings when I moved house, as for purchase, i'm nowhere near a big model shop so every little purchase incurs postage and being an old fa*t living on the lowest pension in Europe I watch every rupee.  Scrooge hasn't got a look in. 


The next time I need to order stuff some tubing will be added to the growing list.

Many of these are polypropylene and not easy to glue. What's your secret, Glynn?

Don't buy expensive ones, the cheap (but more than adequate of our hobby) spoons are made from stuff that is easy to stick with Bostik Clear glue or similar.

I look for a spherical object (perfume bottle tops are ideal) that is a little smaller than the cowl required such that its a rattle fit in a tube. I then heat plastic card over the gas put on top of the tube and push the sphere down. This gets a complete semi-sphere which can be cut off and solvent glued to a plastic tube. Once dry cut out the interior hole on the base of the cowl and final trimming gives a good cowl. One thing I always look at on a model are cowls with no interior hole so they can't possibly work!


Its both cheap and easy to do and many sizes are easy to make.
