Title: Shannon class lifeboat
Post by: marco on August 06, 2020, 10:03:49 pm
Bonjour ,

New on the forum I would like to build a lifeboat.

End of next week I 'm going to get hull , deck and wheelhouse for a 1/16 shannon class lifeboat purchased on ebay .
   - What type of jet drive to install 28mm or 24mm ocean work .
   - Where to find a general arrangement for that life boat .

I would start by studying this...   https://www.panopticmotion.co.uk/virtual-tour/ilfracombe-rnli-virtual-tour/
There are no publically available plans, but the are a numbers of Shannon build threads on this site and it is also worth checking "RNLI Shannon modellers" on Facebook.

Thank you for your answer , the virtual tour is interesting but unfortunately I am not on facebook .

The 28mm is used on 1:12 Shannon.
I have no experience of the 1:16 model but would conclude that 24mm is the better option

I will follow your conclusion and I will order 2 ocean works jet drive 24 mm . I also think that for a boat of 82 cm long it is the right solution . I have  2 brusless 1450kv and 2 esc 80A who are waitting for .

As you will by necessity have to scratch build very many of the parts for your build you might find the forum resident MBD Shannon builds a useful resource

My own build 1:12 is on hold for a while as it is so all consuming and I've built two more boats in a relatively short period. Consider any Shannon as a long  job.

Hello ,

After ten days , my order of shannono 1/16 finally arrived without any damage . The packaging was perfect . Now I have just to find some pictures to go on the building process . I find the modification set for the stern of the weelhouse a bit heavy and I am surprised that the fender set is made of moulded resin and not rudder .

You will need to modify the hull bottom if you are using OceanWorks drives. The recesses are no good for anything but Speedline drives
I suggested to Tony that he modifies the hull plugs but no response

The original Speedline rubber fenders were replaced by the resin version because the moulds were quickly damaged by the high temperatures needed to cast the rubber fenders.

The aft bulkhead/bridge is heavy, but it presents no stability problems with such a large hull.
Before anything else, install the jetdrives and fit out the hull with the engineering and electronics that will control the model; that is a more complex task than you imagine

Hello kinmel ,

Thank you for the explanationon the use of resin for the fenders .

I can imagine the complexity of the work for the installation of the jets drive , because I have already installed schttels with a 360° rotation on an ASD tugboat .

Hello Phil ,

I am a member of the Rouen club (Maquettistes Navals Rouennais). I was the président of this club for 9 years . We sail on the water of the nautical base of Mesnil sous jumièges near Duclair and our workshop is located in the maritime museum of Rouen , hangar 13 quai Emile Duchemin near the Flaubert bridge . Dieppe is not far from Rouen only 56 kilometers .

That is the Pantone colour set for use only in publications, they are not the colours used on the Lifeboats.

That would give you over 18,000 rpm which is more than adequate on 1:12 but I have no experience of 1:16

I would say they are physically oversize. Normally on 1:12 we use 3542

What is recommended voltage to use on Shannon?

There isn't one.
You need to achieve circa 18,000 rpm. With brushless the voltage required is dependent on the KV rating of the motor.

A 1250KV motor at 6volts is 7,500 rpm

    1250 at 12 volts is 15,000 rpm

1250  on 4s 16.8 volts charged is  21,000 rpm on no load (my choice)

Others use only 7.2 volt nicads and 3000kv inrunners

Getting the hang of it now in terms of the RPM/V

In the early afternoon , I received the 2water jets ordered 2 weeks ago . the reference of the enginees delivered with the water jets is A2217 1750kv 5T . I don't know the power in watt . With a3S battery the RPM will be 19425 .

I’m not sure but I used Zpoxy products.
Best person to ask is the eBay seller who makes them

Pretty sure it is epoxy resin but no harm in asking  :-))

You could also ask in the Shannon Facebook group if you tag Tony there.

EDIT I've posted the question

Lifeboat colours are:
Oxford Blue 105
VW Brilliant Orange.
Rail Red
Light aircraft grey.

For both 1/12 and 1/16th scales, aim for 20,000 rpm and you will get around 16,000 in the water flat out. 12,000 is with the boatheld baxk (Max stall)

Use Upol body filler. Spot on stuff to fill everything and of course perfect glue.

Be carefull when fitting jet drives. The reason mine had the suction intakes almost at the stern was because that's were they should be, as per the real thing. That's why my jet drives were there. Being as far aft as possible prevents the boat from exposing the intakes to the air when it rides up under power. As soon as that happens, thrust is lost, instantly and down comes the bow. Porpoising.
The Owner of Hamilton Jet Drive in New Zealand tld me that.

Thank you for this information and advice . For the speed of rotation I use a 1750 Kv brushless with 3S lipo which should give about 19400 RPM .

In the past I have already built a speedline model , the LCM3 .

Rest assured Marco there is no dolphin activity with these drives. This was the first worldwide test of the prototype at Wilton Park. I had the trim tabs set too low at speed or it would be planing much better. As these were developed with my help from an existing jet drive the intake position had already been dictated. So yes not in the correct position but not a handicap.  :-))  Nice work

The original pictured in my hand with the developed ones fitted on the Shannon. I had these made for the MBD Shannon as an alternative to the KMB drives but everyone is using them now. They were never intended to be fitted to a Speedline hull.

Thanks for the advice , but I think with the modified under hull and a good balanceof the boat  should sail well and I'm not worried . The only small problem is that the jets are more designed for a 1:12 boat than a 1:16 and they are a little bit bulky .

Title: Re: Shannon class lifeboat
Post by: Taranis on October 07, 2020, 07:46:29 am
Yes you are correct Marco there was never any intention to do a 1:16 drive as MBD didn’t offer a 1:16 hull.
OceanWorks have just filled a gap off cuff and it’s not ideal
Title: Re: Shannon class lifeboat
Post by: Taranis on October 07, 2020, 09:32:55 am
See in the R&D thread it was specific to 1:12 and all OceanWorks have done now is fit a smaller jet to the original intake unit. This is clearly the case as they only sell one size of intake grill in the spares section.
Given your skills I know you will make it a grand scratch build  :-))

You can still get 1/16th Shannons, not from me now but see Tony Blakewell on FB and ebay.
All the castings including the jet drive castings and fendering are also available in about a month or so. 1/12th scale moulding sets are also available but no castings etc. Again, see Tony B.
