First day sailing yesterday all well but noticed astern not so good good as aged. On checking found in shed mode all four props going like the clappers, but astern only thre run fourth is struggling as though it binding or such like. All connections clear no binding or obstructions so going on the fact that ahead is ok would it be esc? It mtroniks viper 15

Hi Rob is that all 4 motors connected to one esc?

No two esc running two motors each. Worked for a long time with no probs

For a start you could swap the esc's over and either eliminate the esc or if the same motor still plays up it is probably the motor.
There is a but and that is if you slow the paired good motor (same esc) does the 'dodgy' motor pick up OK?
Also is the coupling done up properly it could be tightening up in the reverse direction.

Thanks for replies, never thought a motor would be ok one direction and not the other, learn something new every day
Coupling is ok and sitting on splines nice and firm
When good side slows bad side does not increase
So will try the swap and see if that points finger at guilty party

Hi I was thinking it might be tightening up the coupling on its thread so clamping the prop to the tube, just an outside chance.

No threads involved in the coupling as they are both grub screwed andspilned type. Will let you know how the esc swap goes.

Threads are usually involved at the prop end. With a normal set-up a badly locked prop unwinds itself in reverse and falls off. In the case of a counter rotating one turning the other way, it tightens and acts as a brake in reverse. A bit of forward might appear to free it, so hiding the problem.
Are the motors paired in series or parallel? It can make a difference to motor behaviour.
If two motors in parallel are on one ESC and one is OK, it can't be the ESC. It has to be either the motor or its drive train.
