Are the schottels made by you? They look very nicely put together, as does the rest of the boat.  Nice build.

hello SailorGreg ,

I didn't made the schottles myself , I bought them from bauer-modelle . I did made in brass the upper part of schottles and the part through the hull  . I did made the mechanical part with the gear completely.

Yes, I meant the parts inside and penetrating the hull.  They seem to me to be the complicated bits of schottels, the actual nozzles are relatively straightforward.  Well done!  :-))

Nice work Marco. Not to be confused with Nice/France

What does nice really mean?

adjective. If you say that something is nice, you mean that you find it attractive, pleasant, or enjoyable.

Salut!
You are doing very well, Marco. Your way of taking pictures is informative and useful source for learning.
This build is really interesting!

What do you mean by aerosol  coating, Marco? It goes under the primer. First time for me, anyway. Like so much else has been for me the past few years  :embarrassed:

I expect Marco will say it is a lacquer or similar to seal the wood.

I expect Marco will say it is a lacquer or similar to seal the wood.

Not that I mean to hijack Marco’s thread; my problem is that I don’t know, what laquer is, unless it’s varnish.
Sorry, Marco! Can you give me exact reference (name, producer) to help me identify your aerosol. Same to you, Andy - which product do you use to seal wood grain? - I’m sensing that a lot of my past troubles could have been avoided with two coats of aerosol coat/laquer before priming. It’s like the apprentice is finally granted knowledge of the greatest secret of the trade  :-)
Bien amicalement, Hande
Title: Re: RMT PENFRET
Post by: Taranis on March 10, 2021, 09:30:51 pm
Personally I use a clear acrylic lacquer, basically automotive clear coat if I'm building in wood. It will soak in and waterproof the wood. You use it to fill the grain with a few coats sanding between. Alternatively a diluted finishing resin.
I too will be interested in Marco's method  :-)

As a beginner I used cellulose sanding sealer but over time abandoned that.

Bonjour Hande and taranis ,

To answer at your questions , When the wooden hull of the model is finished , to make it watertight I secure the hull with a layerof 40g/m² glass cloth with polyester resin (see the beginning of the post) . Then I coat the hull with one or two coats of coating with a spray gun .Between each coat I sand with water sandpaper600 or 800 and after that I apply a coat of spray primer. for the rest of the model I use spray filler and a coat of primer .

Your models probably last for ever without water damage  :-))

Thanks again for your very informative build blog!
Within just one page you changed my world-view of painting wood.
I mean many Mayhemmers and other that I follow probably use similar methods, but somehow I have missed important details and the full workflow. I work alone with no by-the-hand master to prevent me from poor quality solutions and mistakes that I have already made. I feel now more prepared to make a wooden hull one day. (Thinking about Smit Rotterdam.)

Do you build alot of models - this one is certainly not your first one?

I love a detail on the wall of your workshop - in a center place among tools there seems to be a bottle opener  O0

Hello ,

No, this is not my first model ship as I have modelling for 54 years . On the wall effectively it's a bottle opener , this is very important especially in summer .

Welcome back, Marco!
The mast is an impressive work of art!

Since your strategy seems to be different from mine, I will follow your painting work very closely.
By very old belief, I have painted parts first, then assembled them. Or maybe your parts are not glued, yet?

Very well detailed brass work Marco  :-)) ....it is also clear you are a happy fan of the Proxxon model machinery  %) ......

It is also interesting that both main engine exhausts [and auxiliaries] face inboard, but I see from the original image 001. that this is the alignment

Qu'elle est belle!
I wonder, how much ballast you are going to need..?
Quite a bit?

Really nice model there Marco. I bet she weighs quite a few kilos already to get het to sit as she does.
That's the one thing that is worrying me about my build, especially seeing how much Andy's weighs in at :-) .

Bonjour ,

The current weight of the model is 13 KG (26 pounds) without ballast . If you enlarge the picture 0570 I have drawn the waterline on the hull . Between the surface of the water and the waterline there 6 cm .to reach the waterline I will need to add 5 to 8 kg (10 to 16 pounds) of ballast . The final weight of the model in working order should be 18 to 21 kg (36 to 42 pounds) .

Rich

With regards to pictures don't worry there is a bug on the site that has been brought up before.  It can distort pictures if the orientation is mixed in the same post.  It is known -been brought up on various posts.  Don't worry -the original picture can usually always be viewed properly by double clicking or right clicking as normal.
