Title: Bandai pendle princess - Traction engine build (plastic )
Post by: kpnuts on September 22, 2020, 08:38:42 pm
Hi all I built this and the road roller in my 20s(when it was readily available) and have been looking to get it again for years (but not for the silly money it was going for) well I finally got my hands on it for reasonable money.
Look at all those lovely models they did round the side of the box.

All those models sadly no longer available (probably several others too, I remember building the Rolls Royce balloon car not pictured there) another kit I would love to build again (I've never seen that available even on ebay, so I would imagine if it came up it would be huge amounts of money)
Anyway here are the first parts to be assembled.

And a bit of priming (after loads of filling and sanding.

Oh how I wish Bandia would bring those other models back out.

I like the look of that, I had a mamod steam car at one point, my brother gave it (and loads of other stuff) away as I had left it in his cupboard, cheers, I stayed 20 miles from him at the time and never knew he had moved! Ah well.
I am looking forward to seeing more of the kit.
You never know, I might get back to finishing my pair of tamiya famo's soon after seeing all the kits you have been doing, I dont get the same paint finish you do though.

Hi all well I've tried the first 30+ yr old decal (in an unobtrusive place incase it was a disaster)it seems to be fine
(https://i.ibb.co/vJ0MmrW/IMG-4407.jpg)

I dont remember this problem when I built there appears to have been some shrinkage, when you try to add the front of the boiler it splits the joint so I had to add a shim to stop it.

All seems to fit ok now.

Should the shim not have gone along the whole boiler, or was the front section molded incorrectly?

otherwise  :-))

No due to the space for the engine it only came apart upto there.

More work done on this one, I dont want it too shiny as they just weren't (all that heat oil grease and smoke) plus they didn't have 2 pack paint back then (in fact I think most of them were hand painted with a brush) a lot of the pipework is moulded into the body of the kit, I intend to replace that with actual pipework.

As this is a showmans engine it would surely be kept polished and gleaming although you would expect it to be a bit oily around the moving parts.

Yes I'm sure they would have kept them as shiny as they could but they didn't have the paints we have.ive never seen a wet look traction engine (unless it was raining)😁

More work done on this (done some weathering on the engine block) started on the water tank, Im glad the 30+ yr old decals seem to be behaving themselves, got some oil staining to do to the engine block im thinking of trying to scratch build the speed regulator (that may be a little ambitious) the kit one just niggles me, we will have to see how difficult that is, I may still end up using the kit supplied one.
I must say I don't remember the kit being so blooming awkward the first time I built it (then again Id never heard of filling or sanding bits for a better fit in those days)
I'm sure the fit was better then as I didn't have the patience I have now with warped parts, I think if I was struggling then as I am now it would have been bin fodder, strangely, though I'm finding that slightly better as I end up thinking "hey I got that looking ok"( despite the effort it took)

Well my missus looked at me like id grown a second head when I bought these in the cheap shop.

I said "what, I can see them being useful in modeling" she said "well if you start wearing my underwear we are getting a divorce"
Heres the first use I've found for them.
This is the regulator the kit supplies

I had a mamod steam car years ago, and did think about the traction engine as they have always impressed me. It didnt look as awesome as this one does though. You always get a nice finish. I wondered if you had any inclinations toward fitting rc gear in it? Looks quite spacious. Only an idea, I thought about doing a conversion on one of my Tamiya 1/35 famo's but it would be hard to make it or its tracks reliable at that size. Anyway keep up the awesome job, you never know, I might learn to paint better after seeing your stuff. 😁

Hi, can I ask how much it weighs roughly? I know its a strange question but my recent projects have been lightweight affairs. Even though I dont plan on building a radio controlled version of yours, I still enjoy thinking about how I would actually do it if I ever did want to do one. If you know what I mean.

Being plastic it's very light i don't think it would even register on our scales.

Why do 'traction' engines usually have only one cylinder? ..... even the later designed ones!
Train engines / locomotives very quickly moved to to two cylinders.....
Title: Re: Bandai pendle princess
Post by: JimG on October 17, 2020, 11:01:06 am
I can think of two possible reasons.1. The single cylinder gave them enough power for their needs so they didn't need the extra weight and complexity of a second cylinder.2. They could take the engine out of gear so could manually move the piston to the best position for starting when back in gear. With a single cylinder it is possible to  have the piston in a position where it will not self start. Locomotives could not adjust the piston position in this way as they are always in gear (the whole train would need moving to make the adjustment.) By having two cylinders then one of them will always be in the right position for starting, just like boat engines use two cylinders for this, if a single cylinder is stoped in the midle of the pond it may not restart.

So wouldn't two cylinders have the same effect on a traction engine i.e. one always able to start the engine like a train, though the weight seems to be a better reason.

I thought this had 2 cylinders, it certainly has 2 pistons and 2 valves.
Hi all more progress on this it really is a lovely kit, I wish they would release some of the others they used to make.

Looking at the cylinder block it appears to be a compound engine.

I wondered if rubber sheet would do it? I have red thera band stuff that was given to me by a physiotherapist.  Its easily super glued so you could make a belt with as much tension as you want, I imagine you dont want it tight.

Is there any possibility of shrinking your existing belt with a hair dryer, obviously not on the model.

The real generator would have been on sliding mounts to take up any slack - the model indicates those slides so can you re-position the generator to tighten the belt?

Were the original full size ones a continuous belt or joined with a scarf joint or something?
Title: Re: Bandai pendle princess - Traction engine build (plastic )
Post by: Andy M on October 26, 2020, 09:01:23 am
I was thinking you could try ironing it between layers of cloth on a low heat to at least flatten the belt and maybe a join under the flywheel? Does it have to turn or are the parts glued?
Title: Re: Bandai pendle princess - Traction engine build (plastic )
Post by: warspite on October 26, 2020, 10:52:30 am
If you look at the belt the join is just at the 5:30 position under the flywheel so if the joint is separated and then as suggested, its ironed out flat then rejoined, due to it's own weight would there not be some sag in a belt like this i.e. not as taught as a a belt on your car or to a fan unit etc but sag both top and bottom., google images youtube etc might confirm.

And while having done that -in an initial search, differing views of all those that came up only two had the belt attached to the generator, one taught and one as believed.
Title: Re: Bandai pendle princess - Traction engine build (plastic )
Post by: Andy M on October 26, 2020, 12:03:44 pm
I never noticed the join. Lol. I would imagine different owners would have different ideas on how tight the belt should be, also would they adjust it at different times, leading to either being slack or tight depending on when the photos were taken? I was thinking red Cordura fabric looks quite like the belt fabric used on the model. Its not stretchy so would have to have any slack accounted for before glueing. A chamfered joint might be a possibility?

Hi all well I had a cunningly clever plan for the pin stripes on the wheels, turned out it was neither cunning nor cleve.
I thought I would get some green insulating tape cut thin strips off and stick them on (turns out its almost impossible to cut thin enough strips consistently and even when you do its incredibly stretchy and shrinks back to size withing about 10 seconds of sticking it. So back to hand painting I don't like to think how many hours of painting and repainting have gone into what I've got done here (and im not even half way there) and im not anything like happy with it.

Hi
On the repair shop show (BBC 1) the young lady had a plastic ruler with some rubber fixed at each end, and she used that to paint lines.

Just a thought, the belt was not always in situe, especially when getting to the fair / show ground, so it could be rolled up and shown as stored.

The painting of the bolts on the wheels ? would they not have been identical all the way round i.e. red for right and blue for left or is it the other way round depending on whether left at the top or left at the bottom  %%  (watch out rivet counter about - damn covid)

Hi all well its finished (I just wish I had the steady hand I had in my youth) still not happy with the wheels.
My missus must like it as she wants it displayed on the mantlepiece.
The keen eyed among you may notice the belt is missing from the flywheel, im just waiting for a piece of leather from my mate Roy to arrive and that will be corrected.

like your other models beatiful! I wish I had that patience and skill.
Long drive belts were cut to length and joined with clips. If you watch old mill films you can hear the clicks as the belt joins run over the pulleys. They were not run very tight and were often treated with something  like Stockholm tar for grip. Some belts were rubberised for grip.BTW were the 'Brass' bits supplied brassed plastic?

Hi all. all very nicely done.  I have visited a few Country Fairs with traction engines driving machinery and most times the belt is crossed over.  I realise this reverses the drive but does it also keep the belt in position better as well?
I enjoy the slapping noise and clicks as mentioned, the last one I saw was driving an enormous circular saw the blade must have been 3 feet across, no protection to the operator but very satisfying to see it cut through large pieces of wood and the shower of wood chips.
I seem to recall that there is a clutch or somesuch on the large wheel on the flywheel side that releases the road drive when in use in the field.

regards
Roy

Tom Varley who retired and owned the real Pendle Princess owned a local caravan site in Gisburn and stored all of his steam engines in a large building on the site.

Sadly Tom died in December 1990 and the collection was broken up and as previously mentioned on this thread the Pendle Princess found it's way to Japan and is now on display in the Bandai museum.

Let's hope they decide to re-issue this kit as it does make a lovely model.

Bob.
