Good morning everyone
i have recently started the 1/48 HMS Enterprise by CAF Models, which is one of the new Licenced kits available from China, is anyone interested in following my long term build, if so, im happy to share the journey

HMS Enterprise was the lead ship of the Enterpize class of 1770. The class was designed by Sir John Williams with a gross dimensions and tons of 120’6” (gun deck), 99’6” (keel), 33’6” (beam), 11’ (depth of hold) and to carry 200,men. Armament was 24 x 9 pound guns on the upper deck, 4 x 3 pound guns on the quarter deck, and 12 swivel guns. She was ordered in January 1771, Keel laid on September 9, 1771 at Deptford, launched August 24, 1774; hulked in 1791. Twenty-seven ships composed this class.
Enterprise served as a cruiser and convoy escort. Her most notable action occurred on June 7, 1780 whilst at Gibraltar when her crew spotted six Spanish fire ships drifting into the harbour toward the fleet at anchor. A warning salvo was fired to alert the fleet and the Enterprize’s cables cut to allow the ship to drift away from the hulks and opened fire on the hulks in an attempt to sink them. The Spanish fleet lay outside the harbour for any British ships trying to escape so the British seamen boarded the small the fire ships to attach lines to away from the fleet and burn themselves out.
[On April 27, 1782 near the Leeward Islands she captured the 22-gun American privateer Mohawk which was later taken into Royal Navy service. Mohawk was sold in1783.
Enterprize was decommissioned in May 1784 and from 1790 she served as a receiving ship and hulked in 1791. In 1806 she was taken to Deptford and broken up in 1807.
Lines, profile and decoration drawings of Surprize as built can be purchased from the Royal Museums Greenwich (National Maritime Museum).
The Kit
CAF MODELS of Shanghai, China has created a stunning 1/48 scale Admiralty model of HMS Enterprize. Before reviewing the kit a few words about wooden sailing ship kits from Chinese producers is warranted because they are not all created equal. In 2001 China was allowed to formally join the World Trade Organization (WTO) which meant the country had to abide by international trade agreements and practices such as copyright protection. Prior to 2001, China was the largest source of counterfeit goods that focused on covered luxury goods, cosmetics, sportswear, and appliances. As a result of joining the WTO, far fewer counterfeit goods are no longer produced or available in China, but remains a problem because copying has become a way of life and normal practice for many manufacturers. This problem is endemic among many wooden model kit producers in China who readily use copyrighted drawings to produce their kits without acknowledgement or licence, and these kits are readily available on shopping websites. They will continue to do this as long as it is profitable so do not buy these unlicensed and counterfeit kits.
A concerted effort by Model Ship World and the Nautical Research Guild to highlight these practices and alert model makers to the counterfeit products is having success and has gone further to lend an open and willing hand to any Chinese producers who wish to abide by the WTO and international agreements. One of these companies is CAF MODELS located in Shanghai, China. CAF MODELS first came to attention for producing unlicenced kits of French vessels from the ANCRE collection of drawings and monographs. With the help of members of the Model Ship World community, proper agreements between ANCRE and CAF MODELS are being negotiated and to CAF MODELS’ credit, has stopped selling any models based on ANCRE material until an agreement is signed. These kits will return once the agreement is finalized and signed.
In the meantime, CAF MODELS has a number of original kits for sale such as HMS Enterprize, with several more under development. CAF MODELS kits are designed and manufactured by Mr. CAO Feng, or in English -- Tom Cao. Tom is an engineer by profession and used CAD to design kits from Admiralty drawings and other references. His CAD designs have become very precise and is able to detect and correct draughting errors in commercially available plans and well-known sources.

I will have to play catch up over the next few days, as i am now retired and having only got this in August i have made a lot of progress, but still very early in the build
i Ordered part one only, out of the three that made up the full set, this comprises on the building jig and all the cants to make up the ribs, this weighed in at 7.5 KGS, so shipping and customs loved me, adding another £70 approx to the cost

Hi Kevin - I really like the way CAF models are not going down the pirating route. They seem like a very good company on the face of it by doing things the right way. Their 3D carving is something to behold.........but wow $600 for a carved figure head. Looks like a great start to your build :-))

once the keel is completed it lines up lovely in the jig, being kep straight by wooden blocks in the baseboard

Thats looking very very nice Kevin - those kits are something special indeed. Are the frames pre-bevelled by CAF when they lazer cut the wood?? Looking forward to your next update!

no they are not bevelled, however laser lines are marked to show the estimated sanding required, sorry i did not mention that, lol its actually harder to do a catchup on a build log than starting one from the start

i dont keep an hour sheet as such, but if i work for 1 minute or 12 hours it is classed as a day, but in reality including research i perhaps get around 4 to 6 hours quality time on her, at the time of this post it was 23 days )
now the nice weather has gone i will get more progress done, as DIY and gardening projects are coming to the end for years year, but i still get lots of doggie walkies, and finding time to watch an episode of whatever boxset is on the go, currently we are on season 10 "Touch of Frost"

Ooooh, lovely. Really looking forward to following this. I am an occasional visitor to Model Ship World and always come away a little humbled by the skill and dedication shown in many of the models there. I suspect I'll feel the same with your model Kevin, but I will just have to put up with it!

one of the biggest jobs on the build is the removal of the laser char, i tend to do this with a bench sander, and for the harder to get to places i use a Stanley blade and scrape it off

internal keel, perhaps the hardest bit to fit so far, even though i had done test fits as i went along, it was still difficult to fit and secure

Day 26 deck beam supports
the plans have to be understood, then read again and again, and then totally ignore them
you can see a blue line under the gun ports, this is not the line for the deck supports, it is the top of the deck, so the height of the beams and decking has to be taken from that line, infact 7.5mm, i am glad it did as it did not look right when i started

the deck beam supports also serve as a brace to keep the frames in position
i dont have any special clamps so i bought a set of nuts bolts and washers from Screwfix,(other retailers are available)

although not perfect, it gave me a third hand
to make sure they were level i made a few temp battons and fixed the supports in place with minimal effort, wood glue was applied, then bolted into position, and drilled with a 2mm bit through with i used a cocktail stick as an oversized treenail

Nice job Kevin its looking very good indeed :-)) The limber passages are all about drainage and there is usually a limber passage underneath the frames too. It's a small passage that is cut into the frames that allows any water to pass between the bottom of the frames and the planking. Keep the updates coming O0

will be a static in the Admiralty style one side, fully exposed the other with detailing inside, and fully masted, and i have given myself 4 years to do it in lol

WELL this will be a crackin model when done in 4yr time you say well its the same build time for my HMS TIGER build so snap on that as i love a long build time

Day 43 internal planking port side only up to lower deck support
got rid of loads od crappy wood doing this, very splintery, still to be filled treenailed and sanded, then i can work out how much planking needs to go on the other side and start working out where the mast steps and half decks are going to go

im full lo ideas, normally most, are out of my skill sets, or a lot of work required for which there will be little or of no use
treenailing the lower deck was one of those, so i stopped the idea of 100's of cocktail sticks and just simulated the effect with drilled holes and wood paste

over the last couple of days i have been getting used to the two Proxxon tools, gaining some experience, the miller is new, the table saw is new but never been used in anger
as im scratch building the middles and lower decks these will get used more and more
it has taken 3 or 4 attempts to get the lower 1/2 deck platforms right, they are the correct sixe but the exposed wood is over scale, but will do for now

The thing to watch with the Table FET Saw, which is the same model I have, is that you must push thicker timber through slowly or the blade gets over heated, expands and starts to wobble making the saw cut wider and then your cut is smaller and will not have a straight edge.
If I'm teaching you how to sucks eggs please feel free to let me know :-))
