Post by: Mark T on October 03, 2020, 12:58:22 pm
Hi All

Does anyone know if it is possible to buy sanding drums for a Dremel that are longer than than the standard ones?

Thanks Mark

I have a cheap set of sanding drums, bought in Stermat, but also available online https://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-40885-30-Piece-Abrasive-Drum/dp/B000PJE3EK/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=sanding+drum&qid=1601800132&sr=8-6. They are longer than the Dremel's. I think that the drive shaft would fit into a Dremel chuck's jaws, but I am not certain.

Unless you Dremel has a much larger chuck capacity than my replica it won't take the TigerTiger drums which are intended for a normal full size drill. The smallest on might fit but not the others.

Martins sleeves have the same problem + they are sleeves only without the drum part. (I think that they are meant for a bobbin sander)

The Dremel chuck is listed as 3.2mm capacity.

The other obvious problem is that the longer the sanding drum the greater the load on the front bearing of the drill.

I am not aware of any long sanding drums for a Dremel size drill.

Thanks everyone for the replies - I think I'm looking for the impossible as most larger sanding drums want to be fitted into a drill press.  I don't own one of these and I can't see me needing one either.

I need a sanding drum that is about 20mm long so I'm thinking about making a mandrel - sorry I mean ask someone to make me  {-)   a mandrel that I can put two standard Dremel drums over.

I’ve found some  %%

Just in case anyone else wants any here’s a linky just let them know it’s for a Dremel. I’ve not received them yet so I cannot comment on the quality but they look ok 👌

Oops wrong link I’ll look again  :embarrassed:

That’s what I was just about to do  :-))   But then I found it would seem the last ones that this company was selling. The trouble with using a dremel is that the maximum shank size it will take is 3.2mm and it seems that most sanding drums have a 6mm shank.

Well they turned up and are very good.  They don't make these anymore but it might be worth putting "Carroll mini sanding drums" in your Ebay saved searches just in case some come up.  They have a clever cam lock that holds the replacement paper in place and they fit in your Dremel

Just a quick note for anyone who looks at this in the future.
The mini drums have a 6mm Arbor. The shafts are smaller, and the smallest of the drums on the kits I have seen has a smaller shaft than the others.
When I am out in the workshop, I will measure them.
