Title: Planking - 2nd layer
Post by: Cabin Boy on October 19, 2020, 12:34:56 pm
Plank on frame hull - two layers of planking
1st layer of planking went on the frames ok.
I have now come to the second layer of planks: As I work down from the gunwhales(or up from the keel) how can I fix each plank in place whilst the glue sets.
Below the waterline I would not be averse to using small nails to hold the planks as this part of the hull will be painted. Above the waterline, however, I don't really want to use pins/nails as I want to varnish the wood.
I would be interested in what techniques other folks have used to hold the planks.

I use the following , The rubber bands are very strong and if you wish to bring pressure onto a specific point you just place a small block or packing between the band and the plank
PS, the bands were ex Ebay , a few quid for a big bag of them

That looks the ideal solution; thanks for the tip

Hi looks great, have you thought of using Trenails?  I cut my mine from cocktail sticks or if you want something stronger use bamboo skewers.  All very cheap.

  Hi Roy.
I think you are referring to my Chimaera build above.   I actually have the small matter of 5000 minute copper rivets to contend with for fixings , so that will keep me quiet for some time . As they have to be positioned and spaced with some care and you can't do too long a bash without going cross eyed as Captain Oates said on leaving the tent "I might be some time "

I clamp mine through the first layer into the bulkheads just like you would the first layer.  They need to be tightly glued to the first layer as otherwise they spring a bit and make sanding flat impossible. I’ve also used strong magnets to clamp as well. Hope this helps
