Title: Riverside Models Narrowboat
Post by: eternal422 on November 20, 2020, 12:36:54 pm
By way of saying hello and introducing myself, I thought I'd share a few pictures of the narrowboat I built from a Riverside Models kit (I believe sadly that Riverside Models is no longer trading).

This kit was my first introduction to real model building, and RC, so lots to learn for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed the research and building.  It is built from plywood and I even managed to arrange the rudder servo so that the RC controls operate just like a narrowboat tiller so that sailing it resembles sailing a real narrowboat (my other love, being a co-owner in a syndicate for a 58ft narrowboat).

I'm looking to build another model now, with some more detail and puzzling over Caldercraft or Mountfleet at the moment - wanting a bit of a challenge but not too much that I will get stuck!  Currently I'm starting to lean towards the Mountfleet "Danny Boy", starting to get a bit put off the Caldercraft "Milford Star" as not being one for beginners and what look to be fairly "overview" instructions.  The Mountfleet "Boston Typhoon" looks great, but again may be too much to take on at my stage of experience.  So, any thoughts would be much appreciated !

Greetings -
and welcome to the mayhem.

I think, from looking at your build photos, that you under-estimate your skill.

Your cuts look clean, your glue-joints do not ooze all over the place,
and you clearly know how to hold a paint brush.

Above that all you need is patience.

If I can state the obvious - and I am still a novice builder myself - now on my 7th craft:

- most people on this board will help you out if asked.
- there is almost certainly someone who has made the same mistake as you.
- RTFM -  Read The Frikken Manual.  A LOT.  Before you even start.
 - And lastly (but not most important)  - Make sure the pieces fit BEFORE you apply the glue!!!
I look forward to watching your future builds.

Thanks Jim, very kind words !  I guess the secret is to just take things slowly - and some very good words of advice from you about fitting parts together BEFORE applying the glue !  I'm getting the Mountfleet "Danny Boy" kit for Christmas and looking forward to an enjoyable build over the coming months.  I've already had some great help and advice off people on this forum, and I'm afraid I'll most likely be asking for help and advice on my next build, but that is how we all learn and I would hope to be able to offer some help to others where possible.

I think it is a case of always learning, but then that is the enjoyment of the hobby !
