Title: La Jugonnaise.
Post by: KBIO on December 13, 2020, 08:45:26 am
Hello!
One day, a friend of mine with whom I drive around the weekend , came to my home to show me his SeaKadett !
I knew that he bought a kit with  an Anton steam plant and it needed some calibrations and adjustment.
Holly s… moke said I to myself ! What a strange and beautiful boat !!
This is beautiful but at a beautiful price too I must admit , and as a principle, I better built from scratch than buying kits !
So I took a bunch of photos of it and I sent them to my friend to start to work out an approximate drawing.
He’s got some talent for this type of exercice and he kindly did it.The project took form and I quickly ordered the wood to my favorite supplier.
i already had an idea for the steam plant , but we’ll talk about it later on. Right now, a few shot of the beginning of the rig.
Regards !

Note: I could not call her "Seakadett" as it is a copy made of wood and built differently . Even if at the end she looks like a Seakadett.
I already had some material for the boiler. ok2

What a fantastic idea for a project, the Der SeeKadett is a truly stunning looking boat, so wish you well with this. A couple of months ago an untouched kit for the Der SeeKadett came up for sale on EBay, as you would imagine it was at a premium price.

After cutting and sandpapering, it is time to rig it up .

Then to cover with wood and snapper again & again ! Then putty and sandpaper again & again.
That takes shape ! ok2

Then, time to test in the water : Leaks, balance, ... simulation with a weight equivalent.

Hello!
Time for painting! I hate it but no choice, I have to ...!

I broke my piggy bank and offered to myself the M.Bayliss twin cylinder . We'll talk about it later on. :-)
Cheers!

Hello!
The Bayliss will come later.
in the mean time, it was time to work on the cockpit and the decks.

But then, there was a problem!
Quickly solved though !
I also prepared the stuff for my boiler and made some gas tank while the flare and lath were on.

Title: Re: La Jugonnaise.
Post by: KBIO on December 18, 2020, 06:41:34 pm
The problem with such a long gas tank , is that when it is 2/3 full of BuPro , the void space above the liquid is not enough and the liquid  easily flows inside the burner line , and ends up as a flame thrower inside the boiler.
.... With all the bad consequences you can imagine.
So to avoid this, I cutted the tank at 1'' from the end and I inserted a plate plugging the cylinder.
In this plate, I drilled a 1mm hole, in the top part and I welded the end of the tank with the supply valve on it.
So when the liquid is stopped towards the delivery line , only gas with eventually a tiny drop  of liquid is passing through this port.
Thus this "empty cubic inch" is always feeding the burner with gas.
Cheerio! :-)
Note : the piece of net visible  on this pic has been replaced with the pierced plate. But this is the only pic I have to help in my explanation.

Hello!
So when the cockpits are done, , they need a bit of attention to be finished and ready to receive decorations !

Then, I start to work on the boiler and other items that will come later .
The boiler is finished and it  will be completely hidden, so I covered it with very high temp peint before to wrap some cork layer around.
That's it for now ! :-)

Hello!
When everything (almost) is in place, it is time to do some test and ensure that she can sail safely.
First test done with a home made burner.

Hi!
I end up with one home made Bobino burner.
Probably a bit too strong as the engine is running (on the bench) at +/- 1500 RPM.
But The test is "Green Tagged" for the next performance in the pond !

Hello!
Before to sail, I have to build the cabin:

Thank you Mark . I 'll know  now that it is a blow torch.
Still the hand trail to install. Fastidious to machine down. :((
Next time = on the water.
Cheers!

Hello Engineman, are plans available for the boat in your picture?

Hi KNO3, yes, plans are available. Otherwise - how this scale replica was built?
These (original GA drawings) could be requested/ordered from RMM (ex NMM) archive, Greenwich.

Thanks! And what is the name of the plan or boat? Do you have a direct link to the archive?

Here is the link to the ship plans collection of RMG: https://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections.html#!csearch;collectionReference=subject-90352;authority=subject-90352 (https://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections.html#!csearch;collectionReference=subject-90352;authority=subject-90352)
They have 'improved' again the copying policy and charges...to make life of model boat enthusiasts much more nice and easy...
The boat itself - is 56' wood torpedo boat (WTB No.12 - to say more properly).
Cheers!

KBIO, once again you misrepresent yourself-- you DO take it seriously! This gorgeous model is stunning. Your photography as usual is artwork in its own right.   I hope there is a museum somewhere for the rest of the people to see your work. I am inspired but know superior when I see it!  Thanks for sharing, even making the thread posting is a lot of work!

-Carl, in Awe.

PS If in your library there are some photos of the planking being laid up can you please add them?

Hello Carl !
Thank a lot for the compliments but this is a bit too much as I just try to modestly achieve  the wonderfull work of this Forum's Members. :-))
I won't tell any name but I have shining eyes and a hint of jealousy looking at some boats . O0

Unfortunately , I do not have pic of the planking ; but these two below , as this not the most exciting part of the work and above all not rewarding.
Just good to see the defaults and where to improve or modify.

No need for a museum, as like almost everyone here , with burnt moustaches  by firing up their boiler, the next generation is more "locked down" on there I-phone screen than on the satisfaction to make something to work !
I am afraid that when we'll meet all , together in the Steam heavens and share a pint , the heirs phone to the scrap dealer and get rid of the stuff to gain some room and have a good meal!
That is why I am glad to leave here, a trace of my hobby , by showing you what's in my barn ! {-)
I must have about 40 boats and all type of engines , boilers, and so on , and every one in the family gives a damn !
(please don't tell my wife , she thinks that I am writing a book) LOL!
Thanks again and keep safe.
Best regards.

Kbio, I think you could easily write a book about model steam boats and it would certainly be interesting to read.

Hi KBIO!
Pretty close to do so.
Since the boat is nearly completed.
Only torpedoes are still missing...thou (most probably) I will leave dropping gear 'empty,...
