Title: OUR LASS III
Post by: chipchase on December 15, 2020, 10:22:01 pm
Hi all, along with my other two builds I am also doing a bit on my shelter deck trawler the Our Lass III, so I have decided to start a thread on the trawler I have had the hull for quite a while know she is 35 inches long with a beam of 10 inches she is 1/30th scale . I posted a few photos of the bow thruster that I made over the last few days on my Stevns Arctic build, today I have fitted the main drive shaft and the motor mount. I  decided to use a belt drive as the shaft is quite low, have test run the set up and i am really pleased with how smooth she runs.

Watched this being built in Whitby as the holiday let we use is virtually next door to the Parkol yard.  Built on a flat quayside and then launched by the most enormous mobile crane ( which uses another huge mobile crane to assemble it!)   Launching is quite a thing.

Thanks I have quite a few photos of the vessel as I contacted Parkol Marine who were more than helpful

Hi Howard, I bought the belts and pulleys from www.mfacomodrills.com I have used them before in other builds  :-))
I think the T12s will be ok they seem to have plenty of torque

Today I made and fitted the port and starboard keels, I fitted them the same way as fitted into my Stevns Arctic and Research LK 62
if it works don't try and fix it  :}

Cheers Howard
I used 5mm perspex for the motor mount, the rudder mount is alloy, hope this helps.

Thanks Howard I managed to get a few photos showing parts of the deck floor, the planks I have made should be smaller but it looks ok and a lot of the detail that I have built into the shelter deck will hardly be seen but I know that the detail is they're. I am quite enjoying building her she is just a nice size, easy to move around instead of hiring a crane. I think I am finished with big heavy models, at 73 its starting to show  {-)

Looking good Chip :-)) ....

I am sure someone will ask down the track, are the inlet & outlet cooling on the Port side for the ancillary engine with the main engine cooling on the Stdb side [double the numbers]

Any idea what the all up displacement will be?

Well spotted Derek pleased someone is taking notice, I have made a mistake  :-)) that's what happens when you have photos of different vessels mixed up. What to do know do I correct it or leave it {-)

Chip...if you have two differing images, it is not a mistake, so just leave it O0 ........

It was just an assumption of mine that the vessel would have secondary diesel gen-sets for refrigeration and electricity. etc....so smaller seawater intercooler capacity for the secondary engines than for the larger main engine?

You can also be absolutely sure that each engine would have independent seawater cooling......

The Our Lass III vessel spec indicates....[I read this as 2 x auxiliary, and 1 x main engine]

Auxiliary Engine 2 * Mitsubishi
Main Engine Mitsubishi 650hp

Just for interest, does the real vessel have differing sizes of engine exhaust pipes?........is the larger diameter pipe exit from the Stdb side?

With such a large hull & capacity for ancillary functions, you could include engine intercooler seawater discharges .........some slow to medium speed peristaltic [hose pumps] would do the trick........absolutely continuous rating, low current draw reasonably inexpensive  %)

Thanks for the info Derek  [I read this as 2 x auxiliary, and 1 x main engine]
Her exhaust pipes are on her port side, the photo is the best one I have showing the exhausts.
As you have said she has plenty of room to fit seawater discharge pumps but unfortunately all the deck is fitted know and to be honest she will probably be more of a display model as I don't sail the models anymore, I prefer the building side. I have another two fishing vessel hulls on order
for later projects I may give your idea a go in one of them.

This class from Parkol Marine in Whitby have 3 engines , main is either a Mitsubishi or Caterpillar of around 650-700hp with an electrical gen set of 140-150hp and a big gen set to run the hydraulics of between 200-240hp , gen sets either Mitsubishi / Doosan or Cummins

The superstructure is made from 1.5 plasticard, I cut out the the window to the required size then use 1mm plastic for the frame.
